Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in Valletta, Malta's Eccentric Capital | Condé Nast Traveler

"Opened in 2024 in a huge space carved from 16th‑century limestone bastions, MICAS launched with an exhibition by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos — the standout being a 42‑feet‑high tree covered in embroidered flowers — and represents a dramatic, large-scale addition to Valletta’s art offerings." - Rick Jordan

By Leaning into Its Past, Malta Is Shining a Light on Its Future | Condé Nast Traveler

"A 10-minute walk from the City Gate, Malta International Contemporary Arts Space (MICAS) opened last year with a mission, as its exhibitions manager Guillaume Dreyfuss puts it, to bolster Malta's cultural infrastructure and raise its role in the contemporary art world. Housed in an 18th-century hospice, the Florence-based firm Ipostudio gutted the space to create a Chutes-and-Ladders–style gallery full of modern sky bridges, restored tunnels and secret staircases; inside a giant knit tree by Joana Vasconcelos climbs into a skylighted rotunda, a bluestone figurative sculpture by Ugo Rondinone sits in the landscaped garden, and the darkened chambers below feature mesmerizing kinetic light sculptures by Conrad Shawcross, with the program also highlighting local work such as a metal-and-rod piece by Raymond Pitrè." - Adam H. I went here just after the opening and it had a much more interesting exhibition than the ones we visited today. There were some nice parts like the singing artillery pipes and the rocks with golden teeth and eyes. With this space you have so much potential to create an amazing experience. Wouldn’t recommend to go right now, hopefully in the future they can connect more to Maltese history and or culture. I’m really disappointed after today’s visit. That being said the staff is always helpful, polite and friendly and the architecture is really amazing.

I had never heard of this museum before, it only opened at the end of last year. The building itself is a beautiful combination of restored historical architecture and modern design. Visiting the exhibition of a Portuguese contemporary artist was a pleasant experience. There is a touch of nostalgia, because we really have something to remember. The staff was incredibly friendly 😁 - they are welcoming, communicative and made the experience warm. Of course, everyone has their own taste, but this was my sincere and personal impression.

A great new art space which I am sure will become one of the most popular in Malta. The combination of the old fortifications with modern art makes the experience even more unique! It’s good that it has the space for big installations. A coffee shop will definitely contribute to the whole experience 😊

Wonderful space to see some excellent art installations. Remember to go down the slope to see the outside exhibits too.

A hidden gem of Malta :) spacious gallery, built especially for presenting huge installations and objects. Remember to check out outdoor exhibition spaces with Maltanese artists, they are hidden and without help, we wouldn't find it. During our visit, they also exhibited an artwork, which was firstly presented at Venice Biennale.

Architecture is amazing . Staff were pleasant. exhibitions were pretty boring. No connection to Malta, culutre or its people. Been to many of these around the world, never seen so blend contemporary art. They have a car parking which was empty but you cannot use it as a guest. Street parking is limited. Walking route illogical especially for the lower part. More staff than visitors. Has so much potential but bad execution.

pretty good display, the place is practically empty so I just wish it had more life especially some refreshments nearby

I brought my sister to visit there and it was possible the worst experience ever. Firstly, there were no signs and the security gave no warning that you couldn’t bring your water bottle to the museum. My sister was taking a drink and a very rude staff said that it was not allowed so we put away our water bottles. She proceeded to stare at us while we were taking pictures of the paintings, making us very uncomfortable. Then she told us that we couldn’t wave our phones around the paintings or point at the paintings in case we touched the paintings. There was also no railing or lines that kept the visitors from going close to the paintings but she told us we had to be 2 steps back. And then she threatened that we had to pay for the paintings if we touched them, but we saw a couple that was pointing at the paintings and she didn’t tell them off. I suspect that she might be racists. This whole experience ruined our whole trip in the museum. The other staffs were friendly and helpful but I wouldn’t recommend going to this museum.
