Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in Valletta, Malta's Eccentric Capital | Condé Nast Traveler

"Opened in 2024 in a huge space carved from 16th‑century limestone bastions, MICAS launched with an exhibition by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos — the standout being a 42‑feet‑high tree covered in embroidered flowers — and represents a dramatic, large-scale addition to Valletta’s art offerings." - Rick Jordan

By Leaning into Its Past, Malta Is Shining a Light on Its Future | Condé Nast Traveler

"A 10-minute walk from the City Gate, Malta International Contemporary Arts Space (MICAS) opened last year with a mission, as its exhibitions manager Guillaume Dreyfuss puts it, to bolster Malta's cultural infrastructure and raise its role in the contemporary art world. Housed in an 18th-century hospice, the Florence-based firm Ipostudio gutted the space to create a Chutes-and-Ladders–style gallery full of modern sky bridges, restored tunnels and secret staircases; inside a giant knit tree by Joana Vasconcelos climbs into a skylighted rotunda, a bluestone figurative sculpture by Ugo Rondinone sits in the landscaped garden, and the darkened chambers below feature mesmerizing kinetic light sculptures by Conrad Shawcross, with the program also highlighting local work such as a metal-and-rod piece by Raymond Pitrè." - Adam H. Went during a Milton Avery exhibition. The exhibition was quite good. The gallery building has alot of potential, a beautiful space but not enough works to fill the space, the top floor was practically empty. The 2 star rating wasn't because of the lack of works as I know galleries build and grow over time. My rating is due to being treated like a criminal. There was about 20-30 staff at the gallery at point of my visit in December, but only 4 visitors. One security guard followed me and my partner uncomfortably close, even practically following me to the toilet. As well as other staff staring over at balconys at us. I have been to galleries all over the world and never had such a bad experience with staff. There was another exhibition in an outside space in small rooms. There was no information on the works in these small rooms, and the qr code just took you to the same information on the board, which was practically nothing. With contemporary work it is important to inform the veiwer on what it's about, because it was hard to tell if the extension cable was apart of the work or just sloppy displaying of the work.

I would recommend the Milton Avery exhibition that’s on right now. Also on Sunday’s they have free entrance now, which is awesome! Would be great to have a small cafe here as it’s a bit out of the way without a car. The exhibition last time was a bit disappointing so I was very happy with the latest one. Keep it up as it’s great to have such a beautiful space in Malta for art. Photos contain art from previous and current exhibitions.

The museum building is very big and interesting, although it appears that there are issues with the roof since it was leaking a lot during our visit (I don't think that was an intentional part of the art). There is different artwork exhibited depending on the season so not every visit will be the same

I had never heard of this museum before, it only opened at the end of last year. The building itself is a beautiful combination of restored historical architecture and modern design. Visiting the exhibition of a Portuguese contemporary artist was a pleasant experience. There is a touch of nostalgia, because we really have something to remember. The staff was incredibly friendly 😁 - they are welcoming, communicative and made the experience warm. Of course, everyone has their own taste, but this was my sincere and personal impression.

A great new art space which I am sure will become one of the most popular in Malta. The combination of the old fortifications with modern art makes the experience even more unique! It’s good that it has the space for big installations. A coffee shop will definitely contribute to the whole experience 😊

This is an incredible building and art space. We stumbled on an exhibition recently about milton avery who i wasnt very familiar with, but it was a fantastic show. The gallery is well worth a visit just a short 5-10 minute walk out of Valletta centre

A hidden gem of Malta :) spacious gallery, built especially for presenting huge installations and objects. Remember to check out outdoor exhibition spaces with Maltanese artists, they are hidden and without help, we wouldn't find it. During our visit, they also exhibited an artwork, which was firstly presented at Venice Biennale.
