Michaelis Food Store

I work around the corner and have been coming to this place for over 20 years (different owners at first). I love the quality of ingredients and it just tastes good. My go-to order to go is the Al Capone on Dutch crunch. It's excellent. I'll even come down here when I'm not working, when I miss it! It's a solid store, though I basically only go for the sandwiches.

this is my go to sandwich spot in the neighborhood. classic corner store/deli, complete with a well curated selection of shooter+mixer packs and a friendly guy behind the counter. highly recommend!

My husband and I both ordered a sandwich,. We BOTH agreed it was one of the best sandwiches we’ve ever had. Amazing customer service in the store as well. Highly recommend!

I was up on Beach Street seeing about this, that and the other guy and passed by Michaelis Food Store and remembered when Tony Ascomboni told me how great the sandwiches are there. Well, I stopped everything and went in for a sando, and let me tell you...The huge turkey sandwich I had was so good..I went and got another one! And, now I don't have to eat until tomorrow! 5 stars all day long. ☆☆☆☆☆

Fresh and delicious with such a friendly team! Amazing local sandwiches / subs. The bread is from Boutin just down the road. Delicious sourdough loaves. The meat is Boar’s Head and a great selection. Really good portion sizes and all served with a pleasure and a smile. Very much recommended if you are in Fisherman’s Wharf.

Hidden spot, it's called Mr liquor on the outside. Would never have seen this place if it wasn't for yelp, I got the jays sandwich. It was super tasty and had a nice spice kick to it. The staff were nice and fast took about 7 min for two sandwiches. Really good pricing for San Francisco, $12 for a sub. Highly recommend

I live nearby so I come here a lot lol. Good sandwiches for sure. I don't usually buy soda from here because it's pricey but I guess that's why it's a convenience store. The guys that run it are nice too!

Some good healthy food choices at this market here. I love the sandwiches and deli foods. My girl and I were happy to stop here and bring the food in our hotel rooms. I like the $12.00 subs, pretty fulfilling. We found some good things to squeeze into our budget.

Got the GT3 Dutch crunch, turkey avocado wrap w hummus and the works. Both made with care and delicious!!

Basically just bread on my custom sandwich, skimped on everything else.. not worth the $13 In my opinion

Fantastic sandwiches with great flavor and toasty they have lots of options. The employees are very nice, friendly and helpful. They have great liquor option as well.

Asked for a BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato & avocado) and they forgot the LT of the BLTA... :( Really nice people there just was not great to get home & have 2/4 ingredients

I ordered the Ferris Bueller. The sandwich overall was a 3.5. The flavors were on point but the bread (dutch crunch) was dry. I would try a different roll next time. The owner was very friendly. He talked to me almost the whole time my sandwich was being made. The location is right across the street from Ghirardelli Square on North Point. Small store with good options. They keep it clean!

Zee's hummus is out of this world. Every bite is unbelievable. Please, please never stop making this. Ive had hummus all over the Earth and it's been great, but not like this. It doesn't make sense. I'm completely in love. If I posted a picture it would be of an empty tub.

I needed a big jug of Gatorade before the group workout at the wharf. It was a smaller mini mart and it had sandwiches and some interesting wine. Here's to cornerstores in SF. An old tradition like the Barbary Coast.

This used to be my go-to sandwich spot. It appears to be under new management. The selection of merchandise has deteriorated significantly and is now just basic corner store stuff. They are also selling little plastic bags with airplane liquor bottles and mixers bundled together. That's fine, but they are being marketed with names like "no panties" and "fresh pu$$y" to name a few. That's what the signs actually say. Many other titles imply that if you get a girl to drink these, you can have sex with her. I will not give this business a penny of my money until they remove this set of "products."

Great sandwiches and easy to stop in and pick up! Boars head meat with a great garlic sauce. Yum!

Nice staff but for 12 bucks put some meat on the damn sandwich. Weak. My high school cafeteria put more meat on a sandwich.

Great sandwiches, old school spot. Owner hasn't looked at his yelp reviews since the day he opened, but still got awesome reviews. Watch Soprano reruns while your sandwich is being made. Try the baklava as well for desert

This is my first time trying this sandwiches and Omg they are so good. The bread is soft and crunchy and the meats are fresh. Really delicious. Whenever I'm around the wharf I must get one now. They're not your basic corner store sandwiches.

This gem of a find off the main tourist track makes a delicious deli sandwich, cold beer and wine in a box. Great service. Had the hot chipotle chicken and chipotle Gouda sandwich on the freshest sourdough bread. Very reasonable prices and just one small walk to the park we get a view of the bay without the price. Definitely going back.

Best sandwich I have had in a very long time. Found this gem while looking for somewhere to get something quick to eat and was not disappointed! All the sandwiches looked amazing.

Its ok. He uses quality ingredients but nothing that stands out about the sandwich. It was 30 dollars for 2 sandwiches a large bag of chips.

Really fanfreakingtastic deli in an unassuming location. Don't be fooled by the outside or the fact that there is no place to sit and eat these sandwiches are the business and totally reasonable prices for the area. We split "the wreck" and it was phenomenal.

I've been meaning to try the subs here for a few years now, I should've done it sooner! It definitely has the vibes of a NY neighborhood, family owned market. Service is quick and the price is very reasonable. A great option if you're planning on going across the street to the beach. We will be back soon!

The best neighborhood deli and market in the North side of town. Great selection of beverages, plus Boars Head deli sandwiches that rival some of the best sandwich shops in town. The guys that work here are solid - plus they give my dog the best treats!

This place has a really good sandwich if you are on the go. They were a lifesaver during the pandemic. The only reason I cannot give it 5 stars is the pricing for every other item in the store. If you want chips and a drink it turns a 10 dollar sandwich into a 20 dollar meal. Highly recommend if you are going just for a really good sandwich.

Family Market. They make sandwiches but the deli closes early on Sunday. Lots of beer and wine as well as soft drinks of all sorts. Support your neighborhood shops.

I was walking along my wife, and we found this place. What a good luck! I had The Wreck, it was a really good one. You can't leave San Francisco without try one Sandwich there.

Great little market with awesome sandwiches. We were walking around Fisherman's Wharf and kept going. We went to the shopping area in front of this market. We saw a few places that had good reviews, but this place really piqued our interest. We were taken aback at how narrow this market is, but it has a large area dedicated to making delicious items. We ordered sandwiches on Dutch Crunch. Wow, this food was excellent. There was an icy cold breeze. We hid behind one of the walls and ate our sandwiches happily. If you are in the area and want a quick sandwich, this is the place to go. We didn't visit that many places, but this has to be one of the best sandwiches in San Francisco.

It's really annoying to buy a sandwich to go and find out later that the order is missing cheese. Also not enough tomatoes. I don't have time to drive all the way back there. They were less than helpful on the phone. Won't be coming back.

Update: I've been back a couple of times and they are just so consistent and delicious. Can't get enough of the wreck. More stars!

Love this joint. My friends intro'd me to this spot while having a park day at aquatic. We walked over from the park and it was perfect. They got sammies which looked amazing, I got the chicken salad which sounds boring, but it was soooo tasty. When we got there there were 3 people already in line. They have a wide selection of snacks and alcohol - my faves lol. There was only one person working, he was so awesome. We were all chatting and having fun while we waited for our sandos, talking about honey mustard chips (the best BTW), where we all lived, where we went to college, sports, aging lol, good vibes all around. I dunno why, but this deli/bodega makes me really happy, just has that SF friendly feel ya know?

One of the best sandwiches I have had in a long time! The "giant" sandwich was so so good and the make your own was good as well! Make sure to get it on a dutch crunch roll toasted-guy was so nice and very busy but efficient!

If there is a line for the deli sandwiches- it's worth the wait. The hot sandwiches are well made and enough to share. A perfect stop before dessert at the Square. Excellent deli sandwiches. Nothing more to say. Just that I'm coming back.

Big ass cheap sammiches! Hard Alkiehol and wine!! Cheap AND good is way hard to find in this 'hood. Good thing this place is around....my wallet can't take the other places in the area.

Oh man, Michaelis is the hottest spot in Ghirardelli. The best sandwiches in the zip code, fantastic prices on Alcohol and the Jimmy/Archie combo of customer service is unbeatable. Brian B, who recommends that the owner of the store "beer bong some Prozac" is pretty harsh on Jimmy. It's a shame because Jimmy, or "Big Jimbo the Sando Man" as us regulars call him, is one of the nicest guy's in the world. Hard worker too. Archie, Jimmy's assistant (son?) is also very pleasant to deal with. He often let's me slide when I don't have enough change but I get the sneaking suspicion that he's attracted to me. I always feel like he's undressing me with his eyes as I'm paying. Overall, this place is one hell of a store and is the perfect spot to grab a huge tasty sandwich for under $5 and an inexpensive Forty for lunch.

I really wanted to like this sandwich. The Jay sounded right up my alley with chicken, hot sauce, pepper jack cheese & ranch. But this sandwich was just a mess to eat. To my surprise there ended up being lettuce, tomato, pickles, and jalapeños also included on this already huge sandwich which turned out to just be too much. With just one bite the ingredients started coming out of each side. So for next time I know to specify the basic Jay and won't get it toasted. Then I think that could be the winner! The bread seemed like it would be good too; but mine was just so soggy with the hot sauce and ranch. Cute little shop with all the essentials though. I was curious how long some of the things may have been setting on the selves as I noticed a few items covered in dust. But that could have also just been from the outdoors and the door remaining open most days. The top of my Red Bull can was also pretty dirty to the point of I actually washed it when I got back to the hotel. But all in all this is a neat spot to check out when you need a quick bite.

Wonderful owner. Jay and his team are great neighbors- always kind and helpful. Sandwiches are tasty and a good value (good for two meals) and the store has some great wine and snack options. Two thumbs up!

Most of the sandwiches are good here but I just ordered a ALBACORE tuna melt and it was not white tuna. I cannot eat regular tuna no matter how many ingredients you add. It all went into the trash.

Just moved to the area. This is a great spot to grab a sandwich! The guys working the store have always been friendly and knowledgeable. So far The Wreck & the Giants subs have been delish. Highly recommend.

Great place for a sandwich! My date and I were exploring the surrounding area and stopped by here after sampling a piece of chocolate from Ghirardelli. I felt in the mood for a sandwich and low and behold they're on the yelp map for me to discover! Sadly I forgot what sandwich I got but it was definitely memorable enough for me to write a review after 4 months lol Apart from sandwiches, they've got typical groceries so it's a real treat to stop by here

J makes some fire sandwiches, and the store is stocked with everything! The hot pastrami is top notch. Ask for the kosher bacon

My roommate goes here all the time for sandwiches and picking up beer. I've gone twice now and the sandwiches are soooo good. Definitely the gem of fishermans wharf. Keep up the good work and service!

This is a great place to consistently get a top quality sandwich or some stuff to picnic with while you're near Aquatic Park. One of the best sandwiches in the Fisherman's Wharf area (along with Freddie's). You'll often avoid the tourist crowds and get reasonably priced food and drinks here, across the street from Ghirardelli Square. Try the "Golden Gate" sandwich on delicious fresh and crunchy sourdough toasted to perfection. You'll lover the homemade baklava. They also have a limited selection of drinks, beers, wines, and liquors.

Do this place! This review is for their sandwiches. Despite the divey, liquor store feel, the deli is excellent. The workers here were friendly and fun to chat with while I waited for my sandwich to be made. The ingredients tasted fresh and high quality. They use the brand Boars Head! Useful tip: go with the Dutch crunch as a bread choice, it's fantastic with the way they prepare their sandwiches. There's no place to dine inside, but down the street there is Ghirardelli Square, with some picnic tables.

I found this place on Yelp and became an instant regular. The beer is always decently priced and my man George makes a mean toasted sandwich! Definitely check this spot out if your looking for a quick bite.

Sometimes I am amazed at how a tiny little bodega can make some KILLER sandwiches. No frills, delicious and fresh ingredients. My go to is the BT3 sammich on dutch crunch, add avocado. Never disappoints. The sandwiches are dense, so this usually can last for both lunch AND dinner. Dont forget to ask them to add the house special garlic sauce!
