13 Places That Honor Sporting Legends

"Mickey Mantle played with the New York Yankees for 18 years, leading the pinstripes to seven World Championships. He is one of baseball’s greatest switch hitters and biggest stars. And though he is a New York legend, it all started in a small town in Oklahoma. The baseball star was born in 1931, in Spavinaw, Oklahoma, and the family moved to Commerce when Mickey was still very young. His father Mutt worked at the zinc mines in the town and every evening, he would pitch balls to Mickey, next to a old tin barn on their property, as did his grandfather Charlie. Today, baseball fans can stop by the town to see the player’s childhood home, and the shed that served as the backstop where the “Commerce Comet” learned to hit from both sides of the plate. Other than a cracked sign on the front of the home, this could be anyone’s house. Visitors can wander at will around the house and stand in the same spot where Mickey swung a countless pitches thrown by his father. There have been recent plans to restore the small white house to the way it looked during Mickey’s life." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Cool piece of Americana. There isn't a tour or anything. It's just a house that you can see the outside of and look through the windows. Still, if you are a baseball fan it's a must see!

From the little rown of Commerce came one of the best switch hitters baseball will ever know. We were told the City of Commerce owns the location. The door was locked but looking into the windows you get the idea it was small, cold, and basic. The tin shed next to the house was the backstop for playing baseball with his dad, Mutt, and his grandfather. No Mickey Mantle gift shop or memorabilia, just the location of his childhood home.

Fun marker to visit! Easy to find! Loved the story! We left a couple of Kirsten's bracelets there. On Facebook page, Where is Kirsten Marie now? It shows stories of her bracelets traveling around the world. We are Kirsten's Papa and Granna. Hugs

Good to see the yard is being kept. Thank you for preserving this location. I like to bring my Drivers Ed students who like baseball by this house in Commerce, Oklahoma just off RT66.

Place was closed when we got there, (not actually sure if it's open to go inside). It was nice to see a place where a baseball legend grew up. Looks pretty well maintained. If around the area or taking a Route 66 trip and you are a baseball fan, then definitely worth the stop.

The only thing you can see is the outside of the house. No tours. Could and should do more with this.
