Beautiful historic hotel. Not cheap but you get charm and quality. They upgraded us from a junior suite to a full one which made our York stay very comfortable. Hospitality tray, fruit, robes, safe in the room but no fridge. Milk replenished and reception gave us mugs on request. Front of house staff very welcoming and efficient. The pool is very nice, just across from the courtyard, though used quite a lot by non hotel guest club members so never quiet. Let down a bit by rather poky changing rooms and tiny showers. My husband said the men's ones didn't work properly. The gardens are beautiful but rather near the A64. Breakfast is cooked to order in the dining room overlooking the gardens. Lovely food but slightly surly staff; we noticed some people not getting what they ordered. Easy parking, on a bus route into York, in fact we walked back along the river.

Review for hotel: absolutely beautiful. The staff were excellent. Appreciated Mark helping us with our luggage and showing us around. The buildings are gorgeous inside and out, as is the garden. Room was perfect and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was a little disappointing, slow to refill the fruit salad, croissants and juice. Portions slightly on the smaller side. Review for the spa: as an additional (free) extra as part of the hotel it was good; nice jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. But as a day spa, it is very small. The pool is slightly chilly. The information said children were only permitted during set times but this wasn't followed. The seating/lounging area was cramped and it lacked ambience. However the treatment (aromatherapy massage) given by Abby was absolutely brilliant, 5*

We had booked a junior suite as we were here for 3 days and wanted to be comfortable. The sitting room certainly was that and the bed was very comfy with lovely feather pillows. The rom had a hospitality tray and coffee/tea machines. There was fruit and sweets on arrival though not restocked. The room temperature was perfect.||The setting is beautiful although the gardens suffer from noise from the A64, the house is quiet. ||We only ate breakfast here which was very well cooked everything made to order. The Yorkshire breakfast was huge but the other options a bit small maybe. Sometimes orders were not correctly fulfilled though.||One of the reasons for staying here was the spa and pool which we used very day. It seems to be mostly used by club members who are not guests so it was never completely empty. Its big enough for a decent swim. The changing rooms let it down a bit being poky and with small showers with low water pressure.||Probably the plumbing was the least good thing here, the taps and facilities in the bathrooms were not really modern standard. I know it's charming and period but these days you could have modern plumbing that looked period!||The gardens are lovely to walk around and they offered their own apples. There is a bus stop to York right outside and we got that but then walked back along the river. Very pleasant.||So it's not cheap but we felt we had a good experience for the money.

My wife and I have stayed at Middlethorpe Hall since 1986 -usually in celebration of our wedding anniversary, but also on other occasions throughout the year. It is an historic house built around the time of William Iii with many period features.|What we particularly like is the welcoming atmosphere, offered by every member of the staff in every area, led by Lionel Chatard. They are always kind, thoughtful and generous in their approach, with great attention to detail. Greatness is in the small personal things. Our room (room1) is full of charm, with good views over the grounds to the rear. The bed, a four poste, was very comfortable. The heavy curtains cut out all light. Overall the room excellent (as usual) and the service from reception to leaving was both faultless and professional throughout. We cannot recommend and commend Middlethorpe Hall, Spa and restaurant too highly.

A wonderful experience apart from the lady who served us at breakfast and also morning coffee. She was quite rude both times which spoilt an otherwise excellent stay. The courtyard where 6 of us stayed was beautiful, the rooms quaint and lovely and clean. The evening meal was superb and the waiter we had was so so helpful and attentive- he would deserve 5 stars alone- his name was Sunam and nothing was too much trouble. It’s such a lovely quiet place to stay-away from the hustle and bustle of York. The gardens are beautiful too- and busting with apples and pears at the time we went. The spa was good too- a good sized pool which was actually warm with a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend!

From start to finish, our spa day was absolutely perfect. Fran and Nicole truly made the experience — they couldn't have been more attentive, and nothing was too much trouble. The level of service we received was second to none.||The whole day felt special and relaxing. Lunch was fresh and delicious, and we were lucky enough to enjoy it outside in the sunshine. The facilities were fantastic, and the spa has such a lovely, homely cottage feel to it — peaceful, charming, and full of character.||Although it's just outside of York, it felt like we were right in the heart of the countryside. We left feeling completely refreshed and already can’t wait to return.||Thank you again, Fran and Nicole — you absolute stars!

A lovely hotel, really nice room with comfy bed. Very welcoming staff who could not be more helpful, along with the chef with regard to bespoking our choice to non gluten/dairy. All very clean and tidy, lovely gardens to walk around with a Listed building to admire in the process and very fairly priced. This was the second time we have stayed and look forward to future visits.
