Middlethorpe Hall and Spa

We recently held a gathering for family and friends at Middlethorpe and cannot rate the venue, the people the overall atmosphere more highly. Both Monsieur Chatard and Julia Betteridge made us so incredibly welcome. Every detail had been thought through and nothing was too much effort. The venue itself is superb - cosy sofas, welcoming fires etc - but it's also the people who truly make it. We had compliments from all age groups - from 16 to 86! The best hotel around for miles and miles.

I cannot recommend this place highly enough. We were let down by a different hotel on the day of our booking and were forced to find another hotel at very short notice. Thankfully, Middlethorpe Hall were more than accommodating and turned a very stressful start to my birthday weekend into an unforgettable trip. Even though they had nothing to do with the errors of the previous hotel, they took every step to make sure the remainder of our trip was memorable and stress free. From the personable and friendly service, to the beautiful grounds and scenic gardens, the stay was faultless. Upon arrival, we were greeted with kindness and hospitality. Their level of service is one which I consider to be a rarity. The room was breathtaking, something straight out of a story book. If you’re into English Countryside and History, you will adore the decor and historic architecture of the house. We stayed in the courtyard which was a beautifully presented and well kept building to the left of the hall. You’re encouraged to explore the gardens (which made for a lovely morning walk) and I really enjoyed having a look into the different rooms of the hall and appreciating the architecture. Room service was easy and flexible, and equally the restaurant was fantastic. Albeit, we did only have breakfast but if the standard of service is the same at lunch and tea time, I’m sure it is fantastic. Food was delicious with a great range of selection, and it was very quick to arrive. Breakfast was included in our Superior room booking which was a pleasant surprise. Access to the city centre was fantastic, we travelled via taxi and were surprised that it was only a 7 minute taxi ride! Finally, the spa! After hearing how we’d be let down by last minute cancellations with no offer of compensation from our original hotel, the porter at Middlethorpe Hall called ahead to their spa and arranged for the same treatments to take place that same day. An amazing treatment, fantastic and friendly staff, and a quiet lovely spa. If you value a good relaxing experience, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Long story short, they truly make you feel valued. I had an extremely stressful start to my birthday trip and with the help of the Middlethorpe Hall staff, I was able to enjoy and relax. My only disappointment was that the trip was over so quickly. I would go back again in a heartbeat, and the next time I’m in York, I know exactly where I’ll be staying. Fantastic.

My wife and I have just spent a delightful Christmas break at Middlethorpe and cannot recommend it highly enough. Our stay was for 3 nights during which time we had a very convivial time, enjoying the company of 50, or so, fellow guests. It was informal, more like a country house house party, but everything had been thoughtfully planed and brilliantly executed.||We found all of the staff helpful, friendly and very professional; the standard of service throughout was very high, whether it was serving breakfast, or dinner, or helping us access our delightful dog friendly suite. ||The food was of a very high standard, and with good menu options.||Middlethorpe is well positioned to explore York or local villages||I used to use the hotel for business 30 or so years ago, we wont let it be as long before our next visit.

WE attended the special CHristmas Carol , pre CHristmas event and it was superb. Whoever trains the staff does a fantastic job as they were all brilliant. The food was delicious and we were exceptionally surprised that the ticket price included drinks that flowed throughout the evening. Everything was on point. The entire team should be very proud of themselves.

I visited with Mum, our fourth annual visit… it never disappoints! From arriving, where we had a bags carried for us before even entering the building, to the wonderful suite with its own Christmas tree, to fizz in the library, a beautiful dinner, followed by a wonderful nights sleep and a hearty breakfast. I could not recommend this place more, it’s wonderful

Absolutely fabulous 2 day break. Like I had stepped back in time to the 1700s. Restaurant Menu superb, and enthusiastically catered for my less-than- usual food intolerances. Spa good too. Could not fault it.

I had a thoroughly wonderful stay at this hotel over the weekend of October the 19th 2025, to take part in the Yorkshire Marathon.||Every single staff member including the staff in the Spa the garden staff were extremely graciously kind, courteous, informative and friendly. ||Throughout my years of traveling all over the world in beautiful hotels this place has been to my experience the highest standard along with the Grandhotel Pupp (used in a James Bond movie and Last Holiday with Queen Latifa) in Karlovy Vary. ||The main difference I noticed was that the staff members looked like they enjoyed working here and they cared about the comfort of the guests as well as caring about the property.||I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for making me feel welcome and comfortable.|I will cherish the memories and remember my brief moments with all of you I managed to get a moment to chat to.|I’m looking forward to staying here again for the Yorkshire Marathon 2026.

Whats not to like , great value for money, considering its the same price as the Premier inn, yet we got loverly views, car parking, a spa and 10 min bus ride into york. Bus stop right by the hotel. Staff were all great, room was fantastic, grounds were loverly. We onlt had the breakfast but everything fresh and tasty.
