What an absolutely wonderful place! We booked our accommodations for our August 2025 trip to Iceland without a ton of preplanning, and the places personally recommended to us by friends and family were all booked up. It turns out that I’m glad they were, because Midgard Base Camp was an absolute gem and I’m so happy we got to stay there! I tend to err on the side of plush hotels when traveling, and a shared family dorm-style room (with four adults/ near adults!) is out of the norm for me, so I approached with a bit of trepidation. However, it ended up being my favorite place we stayed on the whole trip, outstripping much more expensive accommodations. ||While the rooms are basic, they have everything you need to rest and recharge. While the bathrooms are shared (and maybe there are rooms where they’re not? But not available when we booked, if so), they’re clean, and none of us have ever had to wait for a shower or to use the toilet. Hall and hot tub noise were a bit of an issue, but we came prepared with earplugs, and later discovered that some had been left out in the common area for people who might not have thought of it when packing. It was great to be able to do laundry, efficiently dry our footwear on the drying racks in the hall, and hang our damp items in the drying cupboards (a thing we don’t but should have in the US.) ||Breakfast was outstanding and satisfied my teenagers, which frankly, rarely happens, so it’s exciting when it does. The coffee was so, so good - I missed it on the remainder of our trip.||But more than anything else, it was the staff that made Midgard such a fantastic place to stay. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Plus, dogs!! And bonus horses! The best.||We’re already planning to come back and experience Iceland in the winter months, and we’ll definitely be staying at Midgard while on the south coast. I really can’t recommend it enough. Thank you for having us for our too short stay!
