Midgard Base Camp

A very well equipped and well located modern hostel in southern Iceland. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, a great selection of beers, and good food in the restaurant. The dormitory rooms were adequate, with extra space at the end of your bunk for storage, privacy curtain, plus the usual reading lamp and power socket. |The facilities are some of the best I've found in hostel accommodation - superb shower block, large outside hot tub and sauna!! The drying racks and heated boot shelf is a great addition considering Icelands unpredictable weather. Overall a great place, and rightly named 'base camp' for lots of activities in the south.

This kind of offering just doesn't exist anymore, what they're doing is so special and so unique, it's worth going just for the reminder that it exists. The staff genuinely care, you can tell, they want to be there, they want to help, the sense of community that exists in this space just doesn't exist in other spaces. You want to hang out in the lobby, on the couches, the communal areas, it feels comfortable and inviting, without being forced. We were there very briefly and I was genuinely bummed out we weren't staying longer, going on an adventure with them. The food was good, the drinks were good, the design of the place is solid without needing some influencers praise. Please change absolutely nothing, this place is perfect.

Midgard Basecamp was the homiest of accommodations with the most hospitable staff. We felt relaxed and very welcome. The rooms are comfortable, and the ambiance in the shared spaces is friendly and inviting. I truly cannot recommend this place enough. And shoutout to the Greatest Of All Time — GINA!! She was our favorite and made our stay extra special.

The room we were in was very, very basic and I really missed having (of all things) a garbage can. But the bed was comfortable! Bring earplugs just in case you have rowdy travelers staying at the same time as you. The staff were so helpful and friendly, and the breakfast was delicious. You can’t beat the location for exploring the south coast. Plus, dogs and horses!!

Excellent little place to stay! The rooms were clean and very comfortable. There are shared and private baths… watch your booking. Loved the vibe and front room. Many places to relax. Food was delicious.

Wonderful people and atmosphere. Rooms/beds were very affordable. Showers, bathrooms, washing machine/dryer/drying closets, hot tub, sauna, and gathering spaces were 5 🌟 star. I was more comfortable with the cement floor than the usual hotel carpet. The mattresses had plastic covers. The staff was helpful and very kind;) We would gladly stay here again.

In May 2025, Midgard Base Camp in Hvolsvollur, Iceland proved to be a wonderful spot for our exploration of the southeast quadrant of the country. I was traveling with a large group of family members (seven adults), and our Midgard arrangements of two rooms, each with two singles and two bunks and a private bath, worked well for our large party. The rooms were spotless, comfortable and had a wonderful view of the adjacent horse farm and expansive landscape. Food at Midgard wasn’t just good, it was excellent. And the warm welcome and excellent service from Gina and the staff were 5 stars. We highly recommend Midgard Base Camp.

Really enjoyed our stay at Midgard! We got a family room with private bathroom. It was clean and the bed was pretty comfy. Hot tub and sauna were sooo nice after a day of exploring! Good central location for several attractions- not too far from Reykjavik, south coast, or golden circle. Very close to a grocery store, gas station, and a handful of restaurants.
