A group of 5 friends had the 7 course menu on a Saturday evening. The venue was a lovely art deco design, beautifully presented. The staff were great, didn’t rush us and gave us whatever information we asked for re the food, and the option of taking the last course ‘to-go’ when we were getting too full! They catered for different dietary requirements without any fuss. |Food wise we had a mixed experience. Some courses for example the savoury cannoli, stracciatella & peach salad and trout tarts, were unanimously enjoyed. While some of the other courses such as the venison course, wasn’t quite balanced enough.

The Midland Hotel offers a perfect weekend escape from Melbourne. We hopped on the V/line at Footscray and an hour later walked across the road from Castlemaine Station to the beautifully restored Hotel Midland. Anne met us and gave us a thorough tour of the hotel before showing us to our upstairs room. The attention to detail and the quality of the furnishings is quite something. Needless to say we felt we were in a rather sumptuous home away from home for our stay. Mauro runs the Maurocco Bar with good humour, grace and precision- his cocktails are not to be missed. In the morning Mauro serves up a very generous and delicious breakfast. His selection of morning music soothes. That Bar Midland is part of the hotel, although a separate business, just lifts the experience to another level. Don’t miss it. You’re going to stay for the weekend, so don’t miss Wild either for friendliness, food and great drinks. Castlemaine has a fabulous art gallery and history museum and the people are friendly. A tremendously restorative weekend. Thank you Anne and Mauro.

Best degustation ever! Local produce. Superb matching Victorian wines. Modern Australian. In the ball0ark, if not better than Annie Smithers and Alla Tasker. Thoroughly recommend for lovers of fine wines and superb local produce. Brilliant service. A rate find.

The Midland is a treat! Eclectic, friendly and feels like stepping into a bygone era. It is a one off, I love its charm and the humour and hospitality of Mauro. It slows you down and meets all your basic needs without being over the top. |Catch the train and walk from the station to complete the experience! Everything is walking distance if you are reasonably fit and active. Oh, and there are stairs so best suited to those who can navigate them as well as a private but external bathroom (very close by).

The Midland Hotel is from another time another place. The owners Mauro and Ann make you feel like family. The art deco influenced interiors are straight out of Paris. Mauro and Ann have restored the hotel to its former glory. Our suite and the "drawing room" were absolutely magnificent. Service beyond expectations. Highly recommend this hotel for a unique experience.

a wonderful place to stay to feel as though you have stepped back into the gold rush era - I would not been surprised if Dame Nellie Melba had floated down the stairs!! Every where you looked there was an interesting lamp, table or picture and the guest lounge is an incredible room. Even though it has this fabulous "Days gone by" feel Mauro has still ensured the hotel has modern day comforts. The wine bar was relaxing and the breakfast simple but very adequate. Great location near the train station and a few minutes walk into town.

We had four families staying for two nights and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. This magnificent old hotel has been lovingly maintained, with grand bedrooms and a blend of Victorian and Art Deco ambiance. The majestic Lounge Room was a warm and relaxing haven.||Mauro is the host and he is both relaxed and efficient. Everything happens like clockwork and he is always aiming to please (successfully). The Continental Breakfast is spot on, usually with homemade extras.||We will definitely be staying there whenever we return to Castlemaine.

The Midland has kept the charm of yesteryear. The lounge room is truly spectacular and a great place to unwind. Mauro was a great host and nothing was too troublesome for him. The location is great as its across the road from the train station and nearby to pubs, restaurants and shops. See you again Mauro.

Yelp
Our group consisted of six adults, and the Midland was exactly what we were looking for in a place to stay in Castlemaine. Although this hotel doesn't have a restaurant, and is only open on weekends, it is full of charm and very cosy. The rooms were in appropriate style, and were clean and comfortable with modern bathrooms. The Midland is run by friendly owners, and the shop incorporated into the building has an ecclectic mix of high quality goods.

Yelp
Absolutely charming hotel with both Victorian and Art Deco architecture just by the Railway Station. Mauro, the host, is a friendly and welcoming fellow who is keen to make sure you make the most of your stay in this beautiful small town. Take advantage of the bar, the charming courtyard, or the magnificent sitting room, which is a real treat. Perfect base for a weekend in Castlemaine.
