"At the Jameson Irish whiskey distillery in Midleton, Ireland, archivist Carol Quinn shows visitors the “Punishment Book,” a listing of employee infractions (such as smoking) and associated penalties (usually withdrawal of the daily liquor ration). In times past, employees at Jameson’s Distillery were given a shot of whiskey when they came to work and a shot of whiskey before they left. Breaking company policies meant losing those morning and afternoon alcohol allotments. “During the era of the Punishment Book,” Quinn explains, “most adults smoked, and of course that was dangerous where you had so much raw whiskey maturing in oak barrels, all very flammable! Management had to be very vigilant about illicit smoking, though drinking on the job comes in a close second. But the most dangerous offense was stealing whiskey and removing it from the premises. In that instance, you aren’t just cheating the distillery, you’re cheating the Inland Revenue too, a much more serious thing, as they had the power to shut down operations if they thought whiskey was being removed without duty being paid. The main punishment was to stop your ‘grog,’ the two free glasses of Jameson each employee was entitled to every day, for a period of days or, in the worst case, a fortnight.” In many ways, cutting off whiskey rations was a much kinder punishment than, say, docking an employee’s pay. “This is at a time when most women did not work outside the home,” Quinn explains. “The husband or father was the main breadwinner, and families depended on his wage. Cutting pay didn’t just affect the employee, it levied a punishment on the family. Stopping a person’s individual ration of free whiskey was a much more effective deterrent.” The distribution of morning and afternoon slugs of product was also practiced at other distilleries and breweries. Such liquid perks no doubt kept employees in tune with the fruits of their labor and perhaps further motivated them to cheerfully put in a good day’s work. I always come here when I visit Cork as it's such an enriching experience to learn how they cultivate, making the whisky embedded in the history of Ireland and Irish whiskey. The distillery in Midleton is only accessible by car or booking a tour on the bus, but it's well worth it. There are great local restaurants and coffee shops close by The distillery also has a great coffee shop and restaurant, the food was also really delicious. The shop is spectacular. I personally love viewing all the other whisky labels and so much more comes out of this distillery including Jameson. I also love how they make their own gin through the method and madness label. The bar is exquisite a perfect way to savour the experience of having a drop anyway you like. The tour is well worth it as you get to learn the entire process. And the people that tell their story about The distillery are very passionate and knowledgeable. Very engaging with the tour group. This is an absolute must to visit.

This is my fifth visit to Midleton (one time at Bow Street) and it never disappoints. My personal favorite tour is Behind the Scenes Tour simply because of the final stop in the distiller’s cottage. Such a rare chance to view it from the inside while enjoying a special dram. Mike was our tour guide, and the second time we’ve had the happy luck of getting him again! He did an amazing job of walking us through the process, while showing us around the iconic distillery. I’m always impressed with the entire staff experience, from the ticket takers who greet you, to the bar staff who make your selected drink at the end of the tour. Will be back again with yet another group of family and friends

The tour at the Midleton Distillery Experience was amazing! It was very interesting to learn about the history of the distillery, and to see the processes. This is where the Jameson Irish Whiskey is made, and we sampled three different kinds of whiskey. They had some nice samples for sale to take home too. I highly recommend a visit to the Midleton Distillery Experience.

This exceeds all of the hype! LOADS OF STORYTELLING! The tour walks you through the process of whiskey making from step one to last. After that, you'll get to try a few good whiskeys! The whiskey tasting is also recommended! Positively delicious!

This is a tour that puts others we have done in the shade. Forget Heineken, Carlsberg or Guinness. Vinyards from California to New Zealand or Bordeaux are all of a muchness (our wine is unique, our wine is limited edition, our vines are old etc etc - only the accents change). Our tour guide John was brilliant. Knowledgeable, personable, humorous and eloquent. Being a Manchester United fan was just a bonus. At no point were we bored, on the contrary, we were educated in the ways of distilling spirits in contrasting ways, the aging and of course, the tasting process. Wear a waterproof or bring a brolly, to access the various building on site it is necessary to cross courtyards. Free parking outside, all visitors made to feel extremely welcome. Whiskey tasting is great and the cocktail at the bar in the café after the tour was a revelation. Highly recommended.

Nothing short of life changing. Incredible, flown from Australia to visit. The distillers apprentice tour is excellent, less tourists, more close up, worth every dollar. Bryan was our guide, brilliant, knowledgeable and funny.

Really impressive visit. We did the premium tasting session and tour. Very interesting to see the history, how they make the distillate, and transform it into tasty Irish whiskey.

We knew nothing about whiskey and are not even whiskey drinkers, but we were curious about how it’s made, and this tour did not disappoint. Our guide, Amboise, was fantastic, bringing the whole experience to life with passion and humor. The distillery itself is stunning, with a fascinating story behind it. Even if you're not a whiskey fan, this tour is absolutely worth it.
