I'm not usually a fan of hot springs pool, but I'm happy I decided to come here and visit these Miette Hot Springs.
It actually fit in well with my departure from Jasper, AB while getting ready to start my long journey driving the ALCAN (Alaska/Canada) Highway.
That was sort of the main motivation for coming here...it meshed in with my itinerary. Otherwise, I'd never go out of my way to check out hot springs pools.
What also was so absolutely worthwhile about being at Miette Hot Springs was the price. For myself to hop into the pools for as long as I wanted, it cost $7.50 Canadian!!! Yes I'll repeat that...$7.50 - Canadian!
Lol, for us USA tourists, that's practically free...about $5.75 - US.
In all, for the location and the price...I said to myself..."why not"?
I know, I know...hot springs pools these days are basically swimming pools with a heater built inside them.
But, I was willing to look past all that. I mean, for me, here I was...road-tripping around the United States and now in remote Canada... and during this summer of 2022, I've mostly camped out and stayed in some pretty off the beaten path locations, so...why not just relax and hang out in the pools for a little bit?!
And yeah...upon arriving here and hopping in the pools for an early Friday evening in the middle of June, it was quite crowded with visitors.
Pretty much, you're within a few feet of each other. I didn't mind it. I was basically here on a "freeroll" considering the barely existent price of admission.
Let me just give a few other about these Miette Hot Springs...
- It's located 61 kilometers or 38 miles northeast of Jasper.
- There's no cell reception here, at least for me there wasn't and I have AT&T.
- On the drive up to the pools, I spotted a bear along the side of the road but by the time I got my camera out and started picture taking, the bear got startled and ran back into the woods.
- I liked the entrance sign which I happily took a photo of.
- I had a towel, bathing suit and flipflops with me so I didn't have to pay for any extras.
- Here's another crazy good aspect...they hand you a free key to a locker to store your belongings!!! I had never heard of this? Not like I've visited many hot springs in my life...but I thought they usually charge to use a locker.
Not here, it's included in your entrance price.
The only caveat with having a locker is you can only store your items for 1 time. If you plan on opening and closing it multiple times...then I believe you have to pay for that.
- They have free showers if interested, though it's communal, and other dudes were showering nude, which for me...I'd rather stay dirty and un-showered, lol.
- They do have changing rooms with a curtain so you can get your bathing suit on without being looked at by strangers.
- There's a machine to dry your bathing suit off when you're finished. Just put the suit in the machine, close the top handle down and it'll spin your suit around getting rid of extra water.
- They do require that once you enter the pool area, you must be barefoot. I wanted to have my flipflops with me but I was forced to take them off.
- They do have a few lifeguards hanging around and watching everyone.
The pools were a few feet deep though, nothing to where drowning could seem like a real possibility, but for kids...good to have lifeguards.
- From my memory...they have 2 large pools for everyone to enjoy and they are heated. Then they do also feature 2 smaller pools that aren't temperature regulated. I actually put my foot in one of them and it was too cold, lol.
- I found my own little space in one of the pools. I pretty much just lounged around and relaxed for 1 - 1.5 hours. Then my skin started to prune so I decided I had experienced enough.
- They're open till 8pm, even though it doesn't get dark there in June till 10pm or so.
- There's a small souvenir/gift shop just off to the side of the pools. I never entered it though.
- Lastly, the ambiance and setting. Miette Hot Springs is situated around mountains and trees, so while hanging out among the pools you feel like you have great scenery to appreciate.
For my visit, it was very overcast and cloudy for the day and nothing but fog.
What I still liked was the steam coming off and hovering over the pools, especially since it was 50 degrees outside.
Overall, the springs exuded a real mountain lodge type essence as if I was swimming among very secluded surroundings in the middle of nowhere.
A lot of people would call Miette Hot Springs just your average, "run of the mill" heated pools with no redeemable qualities.
But if you're going to charge very little prices ($7.50 - Canadian - especially in this ridiculous inflationary period where the cost of everything is out of control)...it'll certainly attract a lot of tourists.
I was happy and satisfied with making a little side trek to come and sit around for a little. It worked for me in just the right moment and I'm glad I visited.
