The 16 Best Cakes in San Francisco | Eater SF

"With sweet shops both in Hayes Valley and in the Ferry Building, Miette is there for when your sweet tooth strikes. Miette makes some of the prettiest cakes in town, perfectly smooth, in pastel colors, with a single rose or cherry nestled on top. The tomboys are the top sellers, with dark chocolate layers, and luscious Italian buttercream." - Becky Duffett

The Best Cookies in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Miette boasts lots of sweet and stylish treats. The macarons are denser and chewier than the traditional French meringues, and come flavored with everything from pistachio to rose. But the best cookies might just be the humble biscuits, which are exceedingly crunchy and flavorful, including a fiercely spicy gingersnap, dark chocolate wafer, and malty graham cracker. Locations have shifted during the pandemic, but as of publication time, the Hayes Valley shop and Ferry Building stall are both open." - Becky Duffett

This is such a cute candy shop with a nice assortment of baked goods, namely macrons and cupcakes. The macrons are so sizeable and not artificial and a cute little treat. The candy selection is great and they have a large selection, including hard to find candies from abroad. The vibe makes it a must stop!

Walking through Hayes Valley, I discovered Miette, a great spot for dessert lovers. They were selling macarons and it was their happy hour, so I took advantage of it. I tried the hazelnut, pistachio, and dulce de leche macarons, and they were all delicious. The staff was very friendly. I'll definitely be back for more macarons.

Minette is a cute French patisserie offering gourmet bakery goods and an assortment of candies. The charming pastel colored space is vibrant and welcoming. I stopped by this patisserie to buy a set of 8 macarons and try their chocolate and Italian meringue cupcake. The set of 8 macarons includes 8 different flavors - 1. Chocolate 2. Pistachio 3. Dulce de Leche 4. Pumpkin 5. Hazelnut 6. Rose geranium 7. Coffee 8. Vanilla Unfortunately, they all look almost similar except for chocolate. The set doesn't come with an info card to mention the different flavors in the box. When my friends and I tried them all, there were some flavors that were easy to tell and some not so much. Rose macaron had a really strong flavor while some others had mild flavors (pistachio and hazelnut) The macarons were a bit dense. The shell wasn't as crunchy. The chocolate and Italian meringue cupcake was decent. The meringue had the right consistency and flavor, but the bread didn't feel as airy and light. The gummy was a nice touch.

If you are looking for a nostalgic sweet shop, look no further than Miette in Hayes Valley. This shop has glass candy jars full of sour, hard and chewy candies. Then there are the baked goods (cookies, cupcakes, bread loafs and macarons)! The pastel decor complements all the goodies so you want to buy more! So have a get together of loved ones and share. Otherwise all this sugar will send you on a high; but it won’t be as good as looking at the sweet faces of your beloved ones when you bring them these treats.

I love this store. My favorites are the homemade caramel. They also have seasonal candies which make great gifts. Excited to learn that they have a store I. The Ferry Building and Jack London Square.

Google
I liked the macaroons from this shop. They were fresh, crispy, and chewy, with a variety of flavors to choose from 🍬 The best part was the happy hour deal, where you can get 50% off on all macaroons from 5pm to 6pm every day. That's a great offer! The location was also convenient, near Hayes and close to many other shops 🚶🏻‍♂️ This place is worth a try for macaroon lovers. As the joke goes, "Quelle est la différence entre un bonbon et un gâteau? Le bonbon est sucré, le gâteau est sucrant" 🇫🇷

Google
This place is what dreams are made of chocolate towers taller then humans! Candy bowls with so many choices it's a challenge to just buy a few delicious treats~~☆☆☆☆☆ They also have a nationally recognized ginger cupcake that is to good to describe what you are missing...

Google
The best place to get cake and candy in the city. I am obsessed with their Turkish delight and black licorice. Christmas isn’t the same without their bûche de Noël. And their cookies are insanely good.

Yelp
Best macaron I have had - pumpkin and rose ones here. Definitely worth getting. Great service too

Yelp
Wow I am impressed with their macaroons and the old fashion cupcake The macaroons are different from others that I tried. They are made with coarsely ground almonds with the skins intact. They do not add any food coloring or processed flavorings, so they are distinctly rustic and natural. It is not sticky, gooey or has too much sugar stuck on them. I like the hazelnut flavor. The cupcakes are decorated nicely. Their Italian Meringue Cupcake is a rich Double-Chocolate cake with a light and fluffy marshmallow-like texture makes me think of a hostess cupcake. I had two yellow cream cheese frosting gingerbread cupcakes, raspberry chocolate and strawberry vanilla cupcake. I am happy with the selection I received which is a great way to try and determine if this bakery knows how to make a good cupcake. I enjoyed their carrot cake cupcake. All cupcakes were nice and moist, the frosting is always the key to a good cupcake. Thank you and I hope to stop by again and try a cake.

Yelp
Such a cute place, albeit pricey for candy and baked goods. But you're getting it in a beautiful store in cute packaging, so any gifts you purchase here would be well received. :) I'm not a fan of their cupcakes, but I will definitely return for their candy.

Yelp
Miette's cupcakes used to be amazing. I haven't had one in a few years but I'd been thinking about them for the past week and stopped by to grab two today. I was sooo excited. That buttercream, that moist cake! Booooooooooo They look alright but the cakes are hard and dry and taste cheap and oily. The dominant flavor was actually oil. the vanilla buttercream tastes like whipped shortening. The raspberry buttercream is pretty tasty but it didn't make up for the dry chocolate cake. And am I rating too harshly? Were these just older cakes they sold me today? Well I stand by the review because their case was full when I came by in the late afternoon; it's either insulting or bad across the board.

Yelp
I recently visited Miette after ordering their large bag on TGTG. To my delight, we received a full carrot cake, a small bag of candy, and a bag of marshmallows. The carrot cake was exceptional--perfectly sweetened with a deliciously smooth frosting. The shop itself is incredibly charming and inviting, brimming with a delightful assortment of candies and freshly baked goods. The service was quick and efficient, and the staff member was warm and friendly. Overall, it was a wonderful experience!

Yelp
Love Miette. Used to frequent the Miette in the Ferry Building, but this store in Hayes Valley is adorable. Some of the best cupcakes ever. So pretty and love their buttercream frosting. This store is also really cute with an ole fashioned candy store vibe. They have lots of cute glass jars of candies from both domestic and imported makers. And they also have yummy cookies and macarons. Service can be a hit or miss sometimes as some of the staff working there seemed bored.

Yelp
Received a replacement bag of caramels and they are much better. Great customer service. Thank you.

Yelp
I ordered a cake on a Friday for Sunday and they had it ready on a Sunday afternoon. I was satisfied with their quick service for making a cake on short notice. Cake was very pretty and chocolatey. It was quite rich and luxurious. Tasted even better a bit warmed up. I would suggest giving more than 2 days notice for some of the cakes. The ambiance of the store is pretty cute and colorful. I would be back to try other desserts.

Yelp
Great selection for candies and baked goods . Two cupcakes were really great. Gummies and chocolate were great. Definitely would come back to try some of the other baked goods. Staff was super nice as well. The store itself was super cute and decorated .

Yelp
What a sweet store! Beautifully packaged candies, delicious cookies, macaroons and cakes! This place is my go to for gifts and favors.

Jasmine G.

Yelp
The cupcake is really yummy, I was skeptical since there are quite a few reviews saying that they aren't good. I'm thinking it probably just depends on how long they've been in the display, but mine was perfectly moist and delicious! Also loved the buttercream, not too sweet and so smooth. The staff were also kind and the storefront is cute and vibrant.

Yelp
Stopped by Miette for a little something sweet to go with our coffee and matcha latte. Got a couple of macarons and they were delicious, just enough to satisfy! Got the peach and the dulce de leche at $2.50 each. Their cupcakes were beautiful and only $4 each; maybe I'll try one next time!

Yelp
Although I really enjoyed their hand-wrapped caramels, I was extremely disappointed in their chocolate. I bought the Halloween ghost chocolates and they were inedible. They tasted like Nestle Rice Crispy Chocolate, but not even that good. How can a candy store allow their standards to sink that low? The young girl working Sunday was very sweet and honest enough to admit the company does not make their own chocolate. I respect her honesty, but they charge too much for that poor quality. If I was them, I'd raise my standards QUICK before the store goes out of business.

Yelp
Perfect place to visit during Easter or anytime. Tucked away in hip Hayes Valley across from the park you might miss Miette but Don't! The interiors are beautifully executed in white & pink displaying sweets and treats that would make anyone smile. You almost feel like you're in Europe. Do recommend and We'll be Back!

Yelp
Cute little candy shop that's like the ole school Candy Factory store but an upscaled version. Of course, I found this place on yelp, and of course, I hightailed it over there during my lunch break to get their French macaroons. They were absolutely delicious. Fresh, variety of flavors available, and just tasty. This place has so many variety of candies - from chocolates, to hard candy, to licorice, to gummy bears. If you have a sweet tooth, check them out.
google avatar

Beyza B.

Yelp
I'm sorry but their macarons were the worst macarons ever. They were tasting like sticky paste. They were either old or this place doesn't know how to make macarons. I also got a Venchi cube which I believe was imported from Italy. Well, it was not fresh either. Also, the lady at the register tried to sell me more macarons than I wanted. I understand it's a marketing tactic but she tried 2 times so it felt a bit pushy.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Miette for awhile now. I finally got it off my bucket list after reading a recommendation from a thread from fellow yelpers. I went to the Octavia location. It was later of the day cause when I arrived only 2 cupcakes were left, BooHoo. SO I got the remaining chocolate cupcakes with strawberry butter cream. I was w/my daughter and we were getting candy bags as well. Got home tried the cupcakes. It was really good! The chocolate cake is soo moist. I love butter cream frosting but never had strawberry buttercream so I was skeptical! But yes it was really good as well!! The combination of both really satisfied my sweet tooth. I totally recommend and I also would love to visit the other location, ferry building. More cupcakes to feast! (I love the pink bag)

Yelp
I am very disappointed, got an $80 cake for a friend, order it 2 weeks in advance and paid for it , I asked to write happy birthday and her name on it, but when I went to pick up today, the day of the birthday celebration, they forgot to write the Happy Birthday and my friends name, and they couldn't do it on site, so the cake looks generic, like it came from Safeway with the Hayes Valley price tag! And they didn't even have a sign to put on the cake saying happy birthday! This is the last cake I will ever buy from them!
google avatar

Lila L.

Yelp
Miette has the yummiest and cutiest macarons I've tried. Also the cupcakes were a hit especially their chocolate & Italian meringue, it wasn't too sweet, it was perfect.
google avatar

Yelp
This place has the most excellent tantalizing array of candies and sweets from macaroons to cakes and cupcakes, to licorice to bonbons and marshmallows, all exquisitely, packaged and arranged! They're always there to answer questions, and it has a decor that is beyond magical, it often feels like a movie set. It's so pristine. I always go for the ginger snaps, but buyer beware they run out do these quick! I also purchased chocolate malt balls, tangerine Turkish delight, mango gummy strips, and floral meringues. This is always a delight for me when I visit and reminds my of a place and time I wish to be in! Candyland here I come!
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little patisserie in Hayes with lovely cupcakes, macaroons, and other treats to indulge a sweet tooth craving. Friendly staff behind the counter. Come by an hour till closing for specials on macaroons - half off is icing on the proverbial cake.

Yelp
My wife loves this place along with the Ferry Building location. They make some very yummy sweets and desserts. This location isn't as busy as the Ferry Building so it is nice and it also has more stuff with their extensive candy selection. Lots of stand out items here such as these: Vanilla Tomboy Various flavors of macarons Chocolate cupcake with chocolate buttercream Chocolate cupcake with Italian meringue Raspberry cupcake Old Fashioned cake For our latest visit, I got her the Old Fashioned cake for her birthday. You don't often see this type of chocolate cake with a marshmallow icing. It looks decadent but the cake itself isn't too sweet since it is bittersweet chocolate which offsets the sweeter tasting frosting. Don't wait too long to eat this cake though because the moist cake can dry out since the outside is not frosted. Good value considering how much cake you get. Good thing we don't live too close to this place or else our sweet tooth would get the better of us!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here yesterday with my daughter, she loves the macaroons. They have a lot of nice things given you come in for a birthday type deal. The service was great, everyone was super helpful. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Yelp
This candy store/bakery is so cute! I got a chocolate cupcake with vanilla buttercream and it was super moist and decadent. It's a *true* buttercream so be mindful if you're pickier with your frostings. The best thing about Miette is it's location - you can leave and enjoy your treat on Patricia's Green!! Can't be beat.
google avatar

Yelp
A delightful French bakery with very few frills! I've been getting macarons from here and the Embarcadero location for the past decade. You can always count on them for a good, reliable, and consistent macaron. These aren't the rainbow colored goods that decorate your Instagram feed, but they are even more delicious. The macaron has a nice and hearty crunch with just enough chew for devouring. It doesn't crumble or fall apart. Come in for macaron happy hour one hour before they close. Their macarons are half off. I also love their lavender and lemon shortbreads. Cupcakes are pretty tasty too, but the macarons. The macarons rule.
google avatar

Yelp
I come for the Turkish delight! A few years ago when I visited the Ferry Building Marketplace my friend bought some Turkish delight for me to try because I've never had it. It tasted amazing and I've been a fan ever since. Turkish delight is a sweet and chewy candy dusted with powdered sugar. If you're from Hawaii, this is similar to the Tomoe Ame rice candy. During my recent trip to San Francisco, I drove to this location because I figure the street parking in Hayes Valley would be easier compared to parking along the Embarcadero. I'm glad I came here because there were so many flavors of Turkish delight to choose from. The shop is small but every corner is filled with sweets. They have a variety of candies, cookies, macarons and cupcakes. I found myself buying more than just Turkish delights. If you have a craving for sweets, I recommend checking this place out. The street parking in this area was also free so you can spend a few hours walking around and checking out other shops or having lunch.

Yelp
Needed a birthday cake for dear friend on a Tuesday. Not many bakeries open on Tuesday. Ordered the Scharffen Berger chocolate cake. It was fantastic! They piped a message (happy birthday) *and* on their own included a beautifully packaged single candle and matches! Everyone loved it- rich, beautiful & not too sweet. The cake decoration, service and packaging was above and beyond! My second awesome experience with this business. Parking was a bit tough- I should not have navigated to the store ( the mapping program took me to Linden alley) much easier to park north of Hayes street.

Yelp
I got the recipe book years ago and now that we were in San Francisco we made it a point to try their cakes and sweets when we came across their shop at the tourist spot - market place by the pier. We got a small chocolate dome cake and a couple of Turkish delights. Wow, the cake was unexpectedly moist and dense. Super chocolate ganache. The Turkish delights weren't as sickenly sweet as they traditionally are. They were more like chewy wine gum with icing sugar coating. We like the candy so much that we decided to find other stores to buy more before we left San Francisco as all their stores open at different days / hours. It's a very strange set up.. some stores open second half of the week and some open first half of the week. So we found another store and oh dear they don't all stock the same products - what ?? It's the most odd retail experience. They apparently stock different products for different stores depending on the demography of those locations. Go figure. Anyways we bought whatever we could based on what they stock.... So we bought a gingerbread cake and it was scrumptious ! The cake had a very fine texture and the icing was in perfect proportion and not too sweet. I so wish they would have more varieties on cakes for sale - like in their recipe books. Not everyone could pre-order ..

Yelp
I love going to new cities and trying Macarons to see which one makes the best!. I tried one from this establishment because the reviews are really good, but I have to admit they were the worst macrons I've had in my entire life! We tried 8 different flavors, and I could not identify which macaron was which flavor. The cookie pastry was very grainy. They were absolutely terrible!
google avatar

Regg L.

Yelp
Probably not a good idea to bring kids here. But their macrons were pretty good. They have happy hour at 4 PM.
google avatar

Tina S.

Yelp
All time favorite macaron since forever. It's like no others that I've had. The shell isn't smooth (you can see the skin of almond) and not filled with food coloring. It's a nice, chewy, creamy, and flavorful little treat! It costs $2 a piece (with a happy hour price of $1 from 6pm to 7pm). Tried their carrot cupcake for the first time today. Didn't enjoy that. Will probably stick to the macarons only.
google avatar

Chanda Thi S.

Yelp
They were on my list and so happy we finally were able to try this great sweet shop in Hayes Valley. We made an order of macarons for our May event and our clients loved their flavors. I vote the chocolate lavender was the best. The Manager & colleagues were great to work with ;) they have an amazing 5pm-6pm macaron happy hour special as well, thank me later !
google avatar

Yelp
I really can't believe I've never wrote a review for Miette with all the candy I've bought there over the years. I love those Scandinavian licorice they have. When I first went in, the sales person took all the time I needed to help me select my perfect nuanced flavor out of the massive wall of black licorice. I had a ton of samples and that was fun. I also love the whimsical, super high quality candies Miette has that are not licorice. They have old school candies and fancy ones from Europe. Their ice cream is so amazing it will knock you OUT. The atmosphere is something out of a movie. It's really quite an experience, a great place to go if you're visiting, have visitors or would really like something special.
google avatar

Olivia A.

Yelp
The best candy, cookies, cakes and cupcakes in town. I don't live locally anymore, so now I get all my Miette staples shipped to me. They even can do an overnight cake delivery, which arrives pristine and ready to eat. Plus, if you LOVE black licorice (I know that's a touchy subject for some people) they have the absolute best selection of all the salty and sweet scandinavian licorice. And the pick and mix candy wall is the stuff dreams are made of.
google avatar

Isobel P.

Yelp
Very good! I popped in here while in Hayes Valley after grabbing a coffee from a nearby Blue Bottle. I was craving something sweet and this did the trick. They had a super cute selection of things for Valentine's Day, but I went for a dulce de leche macaron. I don't typically go crazy for macarons but this one was phenomenally tasty. It was bigger than average and had a gloriously nutty and smooth taste. Perfect with my coffee, and the staff person working that day was pleasant and funny. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Sara A.

Yelp
This review is solely for the macarons. The interior was quite cute and definitely an instagram location. However, I came for the macarons and left disappointed. They had a grainy texture, less than desirable flavoring, and were frankly just not appetizing. I would not recommend coming here for them.
google avatar

Juliet H.

Yelp
Be proud of me! I bypassed ALL of the temptations-- and trust me there are plenty-- to get to the cupcake counter. That's it, that's what I wanted and boy did it blow my mind! I usually "buy the bar" but I resisted! Lol! Not only are their cupcakes beautiful, they're moist and delicious also! For me, the Miette cupcake embodies EVERY BIT of the cupcake Kristen Wiig (aka Annie) made for herself and then devoured on Bridesmaids. It's totally the doppelgänger (with a minimalist spin) and exactly how I imagine it tasted while watching that scene. It's dainty, carefully iced, and has a tiny confectionery flower and petal. Sorry, this is how my mind works and needless to say, I loved it! The staff was kind and readily available to answer questions. The store is beautifully set up and offered a million and one options for your sweet-tooth sans their ice cream sandwiches as the freezer was broken. Their was a fellow running maintenance on it during my visit. Miette is adorable, yummy, and a must visit when floating through the Hayes Valley area!
google avatar

JoAnn Y.

Yelp
Chocolate chip cookies were light, crispy, and buttery. The candy looked very similar to Sugarfina with equally expensive prices.
google avatar

SisterMable S.

Yelp
oh Miette - you used to be the absolute BEST. Your macarons were always the perfect combination of airy light crisp exterior, ultra chewy gooey interior, and richest of creamy buttercream centers. However yesterday I got in for a long-anticipated visit, and found the macarons were... just not right. I tried several flavours, but can best describe what was wrong specifically with the chocolate. The cookie part looked like a brownie, and tasted like it too. But the texture... it was grainy, as if you'd stirred in finely grated coconut. Gone was the melty smooth airy confectionary, replaced with a leaden, gritty textured denseness that stuck to the mouth. Not sure what's happened recently, but please bring back the good stuff!

Brent C.

Yelp
Would've been 5 stars but -2 stars for the missing candied peanut thingy. I ordered a dozen of the "chocolate with Italian merengue" cupcakes for my best friend's bday. These are our absolute favorite cupcakes, however, when I received the cupcakes I thought the little red candy looked different but just assumed it was a lighter color - maybe they used a different ingredient. Also, I was in a rush as I was late for the bday party. Unfortunately, when we went to eat the cupcakes we realized they replaced the wonderful crunchy candied peanut/baked bean thing with a little jelly bean. Can't tell you how underwhelming that cupcake was, don't stray from the original! Also, they asked me to write a review of my order and because they didn't like what I said they refused to post it to their website. Would still eat their cupcakes again but I feel like they owe me and my bff a free cupcake
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
I have been wanting to stop in and get a few desserts! I finally went with my husband and we both got the carrot cupcakes. The cupcakes had a good texture but it was a bit bland. That was the only item that I tried so I can't speak for the other treats there! But I loved the shop and it's really cute inside.
google avatar

Ziyan C.

Yelp
I've always walked by this place but I finally had time and came in to get something the other week. * Creme Fraiche Ice Cream Sandwich ($5) - 4 stars Graham cracker cookies were the perfect softness to go with the ice cream. My boyfriend found the Creme Fraiche flavor too tart, but I thought it was great!
google avatar

Elle K.

Yelp
I don't know why people love this place. Cupcakes were awful - stale. Icing was not like normal buttercream icing, again stale-like. Macaroons were nothing special. Lavender cookies also not great. Total waste of money!
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
We went for the happy hour which is after 6pm. Every macaron for $1 each! They weren't that fresh, of course, but they're pretty yummy. Their normal price is $2 each, which isn't bad either. It's a pretty small dessert shop with lots of variety in the heart of Hayes Valley. Wish the macarons were a bit yummier but for $1, they're not bad!
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Came here after 6pm for their happy hour and got the pistachio and rose macaroons ($1 each). When I got my macarons, I noticed that one of them is cracked so I told the cashier and she apologized and exchanged it for me. In terms of flavor, they both tasted delicious and not overpoweringly sweet. The pistachio one has the authentic pistachio flavor and not the fake extract flavor if you understand what I mean. It also has a hint of rose water which I really enjoyed. The rose macaron has a nice fragrant and balanced flavor as well but I liked the pistachio one more. A good macaron would have a crispy outer shell and chewy texture when you eat it. The macarons here are not crispy and the filling tasted very plain. The almond meal that they use here are not refined so the cookie shells have a rough surface with the big almond bits. Overall, the flavor was there and I really like the size of the macarons here since they are a little bit bigger than the general ones. With the price I am paying, I am not complaining but they do look very homemade.

Yelp
Lovely candies and biscuits! My husband bought a cake for my birthday, and I had to ask "they make cakes?" I asked for a carrot cake and they delivered! It was delicious! Lite but dense, perfect yet not heavy, sugary frosting!
google avatar

Mia M.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the carrot cake cupcake, the chocolate was a bit bitter, the chocolate cupcake with strawberry frosting was also good; especially the strawberry frosting. They are fairly pricey and I was hoping the cupcake itself would be a bit more moist. The presentation is quite lovely... I really like the box with the 1/2 dozen cupcakes.

Yelp
Beautiful shop !! Hopped in for spring treats . Wonderful selection & staff so kind and welcoming . They were on Chestnut Street , years ago , that location , I loved the interiors , omg The wall paper was gorgeous! This shop , I think the first location , colors also so appealing . Love the candy , cakes , cookies . Reading others reviews , had no idea about happy hour , so fun . Love buying sweet gifts at Xmas & For spring . They have such lovely stuff . The prepared Easter baskets , so nice , priced very fairly , $ 35 dollars and includes a satin bow . I wish they had , possibly made larger ones , or a hamper basket . But I def found high quality goods , to make my own . Fun shop , busy bustling hood . Shop looks like a movie set , just a perfect Sweet shoppe !!! Check it out :)
