Mihir Garh

"Like an intricate sand castle rising out of semi-desert wilderness 45 minutes south of Jodhpur, this architectural gem was built as a labor of love out of brick and cement and Jaisalmer sand by the owners of the neighboring acclaimed heritage haveli, Rohet Garh. Mihir Garh is ingeniously crafted to provide each of the nine huge guest suites (over 1,700 square feet each) with private views and outside space. There are also alluring common areas: three courtyards with splashing fountains, two lounges, a public terrace perfect for watching sunsets, and an infinity pool. The rooms and common areas are furnished imaginatively and colorfully using Rajasthani antiques, carved wood, and embroidered and mirrored fabrics. Fireplaces, created by local women, glitter with mirror work. International cuisine is on offer here, but the local dishes outclass what’s found at most other Indian five-star hotels. At the end of a bumpy country road, Mihir Garh is ideal for those who wish to be away from it all while feeling like guests at a country house. There are even horseback safaris and jeep visits to local villages that include one to an opium ceremony in which you can participate."

Mihirgarh, Near Jodhpur, Rajasthan - Explore & Book

"Finished in October 2009, Mihirgarh ('the Sun's fortress') is the result of a 12-year dream by its Rajput husband-and-wife owners, Sidharth and Rashmi Singh. They wanted to celebrate the rich culture of Western Rajasthan, and take the luxury experience offered by their nearby heritage hotel Rohet Garh to a whole new level. Built largely to their own design, the softly rounded edges of Mihirgarh's crenellated sandstone walls cleverly belie its newness, and the graceful layout, Rajasthani antiques, vivid decorative art and graceful furnishings are beautiful to behold. The 9 suites are bright and spacious, with bold colour themes (brick-red, olive, gold), mirrored open-fire chimneys, ochre-stone bathrooms and little plunge or spa pools on each private verandah. Riding safaris are the main activity here. Horses are Sidharth's passion - they feature in decorative motifs throughout, and with 2 paddocks and a stables, plus the freedom to ride whenever you want, Mihirgarh is a horse-lover's dream. Especially because there's an infinity pool and on-site Ayurvedic spa to soothe saddle-sore muscles. Highs The utter peace and isolation of the desert settingThe luxurious furnishings, deliciously soft beds, private verandahs and blissful plunge pools in each suiteThe Jeep safaris to Bishnoi tribal villages, and the opportunity to gallop regal Marwar horses through the wildernessThe lovely communal areas, which include 3 silk-cushioned lounges, and terraces for sunset viewing or stargazingThe fact that all your meals and soft drinks, plus the village safari, are included in the price Lows Roof terraces and verandahs are not completely hidden from guests on the lawn, or gardening staff, so look before you leap out of your private pool naked! It's in the Thar Desert, so getting to or from Jodhpur requires a 1.5hr-long taxi ride or drive If walking in the surrounding desert, beware of snagging your feet/ankles on lots of sharp thornsWhen fully booked, there might not be enough poolside loungers to go around" - Cathy Teesdale

This Nine-Suite Desert Fortress in India’s Rajasthan Makes Every Guest Feel Like Royalty - Hotels Above Par - Boutique Hotels & Travel

"Tucked down a dirt road in the Thar Desert, this five-star Relais & Châteaux hideaway resembles a Maharaja-era fortress with rounded edges, open fireplaces and a sand-colored exterior softened by overgrown bougainvillea. With only nine suites, each feels private and luxurious, featuring terraces with private jacuzzis or plunge pools, handwoven kilims, embroidered cushions, homespun rugs and whimsical horse-shaped lamps; peacocks are even sometimes spotted on the terraces. Outdoors, an infinity pool seems to vanish into the desert and is flanked by cushioned lounges and a poolside terrace where you can sip Indian wines or Kingfisher beer as stars emerge overhead. The on-site restaurant (led by Chef Bahadur) serves regional dishes—try the raan (spice-crusted roast lamb)—and 24-hour room service offers both Indian and Western options; dinners are particularly atmospheric under a virtually unpolluted night sky. Activities and amenities include a signature Village Safari that brings guests into nearby villages (revealing local crafts, clay architecture and, surprisingly, a legal opium trade), horseback riding, a riding stable, a spa offering muscle-soothing massages, a library and gardens, plus practical comforts like Wi‑Fi, minibars and flatscreen TVs."

Everything about this property was just amazing. It is one of those properties that you know you would just love to come back to again. Every member of staff were so friendly, attentive and non intrusive including the owners who would pop in to say hello. The food was outstanding (amazing chefs) and everything on the menu that we tried was just incredible. We opted for the breakfast, lunch and dinner rate which was so worth it in every way. Musicians would play quietly in the background while we ate. Mihir Garh has a very peaceful vibe to it with lots of places to sit and chill. We had a ground floor suite with our own plunge pool (room A3) Full sun all day. We would sit and watch the wildlife pass by. The sunset terrace was great at the end of the day to watch the sunset. We experienced their dinner in the desert (highly recommend it) with live music and dancers and all food cooked fresh with one of their chefs. It was hard to leave to this place. We have been lucky enough to visit India many times and have stayed in some truly wonderful places but there is just something about Mihir Garh that took our hearts. We will be back next year. Thank you so much to all at Mihir Garh

Incredible! Just looking back at the photos now makes me feel so happy and lucky to have stayed here. What a fabulous hotel. It's like a private retreat where you are so well looked after! The last 10 mins of the drive in you may think 'hang on, where are we going' as you leave the village on a sand track - the fort style hotel then appears and you just say 'wow'! Dinner every night is a lovely relaxed experience with great service and delicious food. There are plenty of trips you can do. Part of our booking was a picnic in the desert which is highly recommended. Room are beautiful - each is a suite so you have tons of space and a lovely outdoor area - either a pool or a jacuzzi. Main pool was pretty but not heated so be brave!

A magical oasis in the desert. From start to finish our stay at Mihir Garh was incredible, the beautiful handcrafted fort, all sourced locally, is stunning. The ambiance in the evening with the candles, lighting, and design of the property left everyone in awe.||Ok top of that the food is incredible, service impeccable, and the owner and his family are some of the most hospitable people I have ever met.||It was my first time staying here but won't be my last. Previously stayed at another one of their properties and both the experiences have been superb.||Thank you and see you again!

Everything from the rooms, the service, the food, the location, the experience was all absolutely 10/10. I couldn’t recommend this place enough. We came from London for a few nights before heading to Delhi and we didn’t want to leave. The place offered an oasis of peace and serenity outside the exciting Jodhpur. I would (and will 100%) recommend this stunning boutique hotel to anyone wanting to go. The photos and explanation don’t do it justice, once of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed.
