I recently visited Mike’s Kitchen, and I must say the experience felt very different from what I remembered. Back in 2021, I always saw Mike’s Kitchen as a more upmarket restaurant, especially when it came to food presentation—it used to feel exciting and well thought out.
This time around, however, I was a bit disappointed. I ordered ribs with wings and rice, and while the ribs were flavourful and definitely hit the spot, the overall presentation of the plate fell short. It just wasn’t visually appealing, and that excitement that usually comes with eating out—or even creating content around the food—was missing.
The wings were quite ordinary, nothing memorable. I also ordered an avocado and biltong salad, but unfortunately, it didn’t work for me. The vegetable cuts were far too large, making the salad unpleasant to eat. There was very little avocado and biltong, while the tomato slices were oversized and the lettuce barely cut at all, which really affected the experience.
I won’t say much about the rice—it looked quite average. The takeaway packaging for the doggy bag also felt underwhelming. It lacked any Mike’s Kitchen branding and came across more like generic takeaway packaging, which didn’t align with the image I associate with the restaurant.
On a positive note, the waiters and waitresses were great—full of energy, friendly, and attentive. Their service was definitely a highlight. I just hope the kitchen can match that same energy by revisiting the standards and presentation that once made Mike’s Kitchen stand out.
