Following Yelp's Top Trends to Try in 2021, my friends and I went on a most excellent food adventure yesterday. In search of the very buzz worthy Birria taco, we headed south to Norwalk and not only found authentic Birria Quesitacos, but also a really awesome Birria Pizzadilla! It was our first time trying Birria and it will most definitely not be the last.
Pro tip: Birria is only available on Sundays at the Mil Sabores food truck, but definitely worth the wait every week. It's a well oiled machine inside of the truck and they crank those tacos out!
I did a little research before we left for Mil Sabores. Birria is a traditional Mexican dish, that originated in the Jalisco state, traditionally made with goat meat, but now made with beef. The word birria means "exquisite savory dish, full of culture and tradition." They shred the meat, heat up the tortilla and dip it in a broth before adding cheese and serving it with onion, cilantro, salsa and lime. You can dip your tacos into a Consome which is a stew with dried chiles and other spices and shredded beef. Some of the flavors involved are guajillo, ancho, and chipotle peppers and spices like cumin, thyme, oregano, marjoram, cinnamon and cloves.
We got to Norwalk and immediately ordered our food from the truck. The line wasn't that bad at all, but it did get longer after we ordered. It was a cold day, so when we picked up our bag of Quesitacos and more, we headed to our heated car and had one of the best meals ever!
My first bite of the Birria Quesitaco was like nothing I have ever tasted before. Spicy and yet a little hint of sweet, maybe that's the clove or cinnamon, but sign me up, because I had three more after the first one! They were that good. I was also dipping my tacos into the consome and it had a really nice spice to it. The tacos come with lime wedges, radish and a nice hot green sauce. I gave my tacos a good lime squeeze and also added the hot sauce before dipping it into the consome. Yasssss!! Outstanding!
We also ordered the Birria Pizzadilla. The pizza box it came in was heavy when I picked it up. Very impressive! It serves three to four people and I would recommend this as a great party offering if you are ever looking to wow a host! Cheese, Birria, grilled tortilla, sour cream and salsa. So unique and delicious.
We also tried a Horchata and Maracuya. Horchata is a popular Mexican drink that is made out of rice, milk, vanilla and cinnamon. It tasted like rice pudding and I loved it. The Maracuya is a sweet passion fruit juice blend. My friend really like that one.
Overall, it was a true pilgrimage to Norwalk to find the Mil Sabores food truck and that led us to some really amazing Birria! I'm always up for fun road trips that lead you to some place or something that you've never seen or had before and that's exactly what we got. Make your plans for a future Sunday now!
