The Oldest Living Things in the World

"Off the coast of New Zealand, in the Tasman Sea, huge granite cliffs rise 3,900 feet or more, and plunge 300-1500 feet under the surface of the water. These mountainous structures, carved by ancient glaciers, are the fjords of the Milford Sound. Milford Sound is home to some of the world’s most unique flora and fauna. Ancient clams called brachiopods are buried under the floor of the fjord, and have had no need to evolve for over 300 million years. The world’s largest population of black coral trees also lives under the surface. Related to sea anemones, the coral colonies’ lifespans are over 4000 years and they are among the oldest continuously living organisms on the planet. There are approximately seven million of the colonies in Milford Sound. Black coral trees can be seen through the Milford Discovery Centre and Underwater Observatory. Dolphins, New Zealand Fur Seals, and Fjordland Crested Penguins also frequent the waters. Lucky visitors will see the occasional whale that wanders into the fiord from the Tasman Sea. Dolphins swim alongside the Milford Sound Cruise Ships and show off for their guests. Groups of penguins pop in and out of the water, while the fur seals rest on the low rocks. The fjord gets over 20 feet of rainfall every year, feeding its two permanent waterfalls. Good weather is a bit of a long shot, but rains only serve to create hundreds of temporary waterfalls that sporadically appear on every cliff. If the sun does decide to peek out of the clouds, expect a rainbow at the bottom of every misty waterfall. Milford Sound is New Zealand’s most popular fjord, because it is the only one that can be reached by car. Milford Road is a steep five hour drive from Queenstown, but the determined traveller will find that the stunning scenery and Lord of the Rings landmarks make the journey as delightful as the destination." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Unforgettable Experience at Milford Sound! The journey to Milford Sound is just as breathtaking as the destination itself! The drive through Fiordland National Park offers stunning mountain views, waterfalls, and lush forests. We stopped at several viewpoints along the way, and each one was more incredible than the last. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the scenery before you reach the Sound. The Milford Sound cruise was the highlight of our trip. The sheer cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic fjords left us in awe. We were lucky enough to spot seals and even some penguins along the way! The boat was comfortable, and the crew was knowledgeable, providing interesting facts about the area’s history and wildlife. If you're visiting New Zealand, Milford Sound is an absolute must-see! Highly recommend taking both the drive and the cruise to fully appreciate the natural beauty of this place.

We drove to this area, which gave us the opportunity to get out of the car whenever we saw a beautiful site- and there were many! Soaring cliffs and waterfalls, rushing streams, huge trees and ferns& moss growing everywhere! Be prepared for rain showers, as this area gets lots of rainfall.

The drive up to Milford sound and the cruise is worth it! Spectacular views!!! We were so glad the rain stopped, allowing us to enjoy the waterfalls, seals, greenery, mountains, and everything it had to offer. Honestly, no pictures could do it justice — the beauty was beyond anything we could capture!

Google
A stunning place to cruise through in New Zealand. If you haven’t done this then I’d put it high on your bucket list. We had one of the best days in 2 years for weather, last few times I’ve been there it has been raining and very low cloud cover so pick your time carefully. It’s very peaceful and an abundant of sights to take it. Lots of bottle nose dolphins jumping out of the water near the entrance. Near winter time the sound is teaming with waterfalls everywhere you look.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Milford Sound in New Zealand and it was an absolutely breathtaking experience! The scenery was stunning and truly awe-inspiring. The towering mountains, crystal clear water, and cascading waterfalls all around were simply incredible. The boat tour was the perfect way to see everything up close and personal. Our guide was knowledgeable and informative, providing us with plenty of interesting facts and stories about the landscape and wildlife. The highlight of the tour for me was definitely seeing the seal colony relaxing on the rocks. It was such a treat to get so close to these adorable creatures in their natural habitat. Overall, I cannot recommend Milford Sound enough. It should be on everyone's bucket list when visiting New Zealand. The natural beauty of this place is simply unmatched and it truly is an unforgettable experience. Thank you for an incredible day!

Only saw two waterfalls today. Better come on rainy day if you looking for the waterfalls. However, the views along the way was still outstanding.

I visited in April 2017, and it was absolutely breathtaking! 🍂🛥️ Cruising through Milford Sound, the autumn colors on the mountains, cascading waterfalls, and serene reflections on the water made it an unforgettable experience. A must-visit for anyone who loves nature and stunning landscapes!

Simply magnificent, breathtaking views. Be sure to book a cruise! We opted to not dine on the cruise so we could spend time soaking in the beauty - what we did was to have a heavy breakfast and a snack before the cruise :)
