Military Aviation Museum

I'm giving five stars, because the fact of the matter is the individuals that volunteered here or work here. Actually cared, and we're glad to be there. That's huge for me, because if you're gonna have a place like this, be enthusiastic about it, be glad you're there, which everybody was. Not to mention the information that they had about different things were also plentiful. The hangers could be a little more interactive where you could get up closer to the planes maybe in look into some of them, but they were still very cool. I did disagree with the $350 price tag to get a quick flight in one of the planes, which to me fuel costs are not that high. I mean, who in the world can afford that amount of money? They gotta change that or not. Because that's just outrageous and screams we cater to a certain sect of folk...I mean we the little people are helping keeping this place going to, by buying regular tickets and merchandise, I wanted to go so bad, but oh well... Anyway, It's a pretty big area and we spent three hours there total. It's definitely worth going, and I am a critic as you can see from the things that I review. So again, it's definitely worth going✌🏼

My wife and I took two of our grandchildren to the Military Aviation Museum for their Planes, Trains and Santa 2025 event. WE HAD A BLAST!! The grandkids loved it! I'm somewhat of a military history buff and I was in heaven with all the WWII planes. We saw the traveling display The Longest Yarn 1 which is simply amazing. We were so glad to see it before it goes to it's permanent home in Carentan, France. The kids got to drive one of the trains (O gauge) setup by one of the participating model train clubs, of which there were several. The kids made there own personal buttons, and got to ride on a bomb train after a donation to CHKD. They got to talk to Santa and Mrs. Claus about what they want for Christmas. Additionally, thanks to an amateur radio club, they got to talk to elves at the North Pole and brush up on their Morris Code skills. The museum had an old red Jaguar sports car just like my dad had when I was a little boy, except ours was green. The staff was awesome, personable and so knowledgeable! We are certainly going back to take the guided tour through all the planes and vintage buildings. What a wonderful time we had!

What a cool place! So many planes to see and learn about. Recommend a tour if you can catch one. Lots of extra details and stories you wouldn't get if touring alone! Even the bathrooms have history lessons on the walls.

We went to the museum for an after hours special event and got to see both of the WWII hangars with the aircraft. It was amazing. There were volunteers there to tell us about the planes. They are all pristine and fully restored. You literally walk amongst these planes around, under and can see them up close! Very cool place!

Amazing assortment of planes from early to mid 20th century from all different countries. All of them are in working order. Amazing train displays in another part of the museum. There are special activities that take place here like Santa arriving by plane.

Excellent aviation museum. Many WWI and WWII planes I've never seen before. Also, the relocated and restored RAF Goxhill Watch Office provided excellent insight on WWII European air operations out of England

We drove to VA Beach to check this Museum off our "adventure" list. So glad we did, the staff was great! The gentleman that greeted us was very knowledgeable and gave us a backstory of some of the planes and history. They have quite a few planes there and upstairs is a cool collection of items. We definitely enjoyed our time there and the gift shop has alot of cool things as well!

I stay in Richmond, so more than two hours travel until this Museum. Nice location, very quiet and lot of green grass and tree around. If you want to spend a Sunday with you family or alone, this museum is the right place to visit. Recommended.

Had a wonderful afternoon touring the Virginia Beach Military Aviation Museum. The Museum houses one of the world's largest private collections of warbirds in flying condition. It includes examples from Germany, France, Italy, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, from both World War I and World War II. Our tour guide, a veteran of the Royal Air Force, was very knowledgeable and an absolute delight. 10 out of 5 stars and higher recommended.

I booked a ride on the '41 Stearman biplane. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!!! I can't tell anybody enough about what a truly magic time it was. Everybody should do this. And folks should continue to support this national treasure facility. This place is fabulous. The staff is very very proud to both maintain and show off these irreplaceable machines. Please go see for yourself!!! Take your whole family.

Great place to visit if you are into aviation history. They have a ton of amazing planes, yes a lot of them are reproductions, but still, great to see. The staff are experts in military aviation and can answer any question. I highly recommend this.

When I first walked up, I was impressed with the building itself. Most military museums I've been to that aren't federally funded are old and a little worn down. Not this spot! The updates are clear when even just driving up, and that is just the beginning. Well kept, and with volunteers running the show even on a Tuesday during school time, this place shines for its love of history and keeping it current. I was absolutely impressed with the aircraft and the exhibits; even the gift shop had awesome selection! It seems a little pricy perhaps at first, but it was absolutely worth it. We will be back to see the flights; who cares it's a haul from Hampton!

Docent tours made the experience so much better. Highly recommend to anyone who is a military or aviation buff. Interesting way to spend the afternoon.

What a nice place to visit. I was amazed with how big it was, filled with actual planes that are in working condition. There was so much history in there along with a guide that would walk you through a "tour" of the place. We were also fortune to see a few of the planes being shifted around. We had our 4 year old with us and she even enjoyed the time although I would recommend some type of trolly because you will be walking quite a bit especially if you want to check out the WW1 and 2 wings. Overall, this is a great place to take the family, for veterans or anyone that wanted to change up the pace and have something interesting to explore.

A cute little museum packed with so much history and character. All of the people who work here were an absolute delight. They were all so nice and knowledgeable. They enjoyed answering questions and showing you around. A great place to take kids as long as they're not touching the aircrafts because they kindly ask that you don't. They have a little spot upstairs for the kids though where they can color and read books and play with toys. The bathrooms were clean and they had a changing table in there. They also have guided tours to see more outside of the main building where the aircraft were. Outside of the museum, they have a little area with metal dinosaurs and it was my toddler's absolute favorite part. I enjoyed coming here. It was very quiet and not overstimulating at all.

The Military Aviation Museum is an interesting stop for aviation enthusiasts. It features a collection of historic aircraft and informative exhibits. While it's informative, the experience can feel a bit dry for those not deeply interested in aviation.

My family and I had a great time at the museum. We loved seeing the old airplanes and the special exhibition on the flight jackets. We wished we'd of gotten to see the control tower. The exhibition on German planes was pretty good, and we found a special inscription on a hangar beam from a forced labor worker.

I recently visited the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach and was blown away by the incredible collection of vintage aircrafts on display. The museum host events for the community like the Cova Battle of the Burgers. It is an event by Coastal Virginia magazine that happens annually. Aside from that my life as a homeschool mom, brought my family and I here to gain more knowledge on the World War I and II airplanes. The museum is beautifully curated and the staff are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about aviation history. The dinosaur park at the entrance is a can't miss. According to the website the cost is as stated: "Members - Free WWII & Korea War Veterans - Free Adults - $15.00 Youth (ages 6-17) - $7.50 Child 5 & under - Free Seniors (65+) - $13.00 Active Duty, Retired Military and dependents - $12.00 Groups of 10 or more: Adults - $13.00 Youth (ages 6-17) - $6.00" One of the highlights of my visit was seeing the museum's collection of World War II-era planes, including a fully restored P-51 Mustang and a B-25 Mitchell bomber. The attention to detail in the restoration work is truly impressive and it's clear that the museum staff take great pride in preserving these important pieces of history. In addition to the aircraft displays, the museum also offers a variety of educational programs and events for visitors of all ages. I highly recommend checking out the flight demonstrations and guided tours, which provide a fascinating look into the world of military aviation. Overall, I had a fantastic experience at the Military Aviation Museum and would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in aviation history. It's a must-visit destination for anyone visiting Virginia Beach! I can't wait to go again. On memorial day veterans and military families that are members of usaa get to see the USAA Poppy exhibit and enter the museum free from May 26-29th!

Spent the day at this awesome little museum with my job SKYDIVE SUFFOLK in support of the WOUNDED WARRIORS/ USO jump over the Virginia Beach. The location is great! They have so many amazing planes and artifacts that kids of all ages can enjoy. The volunteers there are very knowledgeable and friendly. Our team had a great day there helping some wounded warriors with jumps and I feel like the museum is as the perfect setting. For the kids they have a few interactive exhibits as well as a good amount of planes to climb in. Certain days they actually have air shows during the summer - so I would check their web pages for the actual times and dates. Great little gift shop as you walk in as well. On the property as you first come in they have some really cool Dino statues and a water fountain that's cool to check out. Definitely think it's a place all kids should go!!

Low cost entry for your aviation enthusiast. The volunteers at the museum were awesome! You get so up close and next to all the replicas! My son absolutely loved this museum. They do have a couple planes that are originals. We spent over 3 hours here with the tour included. Multiple hangars. They also rebuilt a watch tower on the property. It's a little far out from Virginia Beach, tucked away in a field but so worth it! Don't forget to check out the museums gift shop!

Really cool to see all the authentic planes. Had one sort of rude encounter with a staff member, but otherwise fantastic!!

I have a friend who volunteers here and he is a retired Captain. Gave my group THE BEST tour I think anyone could. Loved all his story telling and historical facts. This was my most favorite experience. This is an amazing collection of historical planes, buildings and vehicles. If you do a self guided tour , that is also nice. My husband and I have done a lot of these. The guided tour was by far THE BEST from the Captain. He is a fantastic friend and his story telling is my favorite. I love his first hand stories. WE have been to special events. I highly recommend you do this. It is pricey but they have reenactment of historical people and groups. They have unbelievable historical airshows. Hot air balloon rides. 1950's & 1940's singers. They have dancing and a lot of food and drink. I consider this the event of the year

Great experience and collection of planes. The volunteers willingly share a lot of history and what it was like at the time. A must see when you're in the area.

I have been to The Military Aviation many times and always delight in introducing it to friends. I took a friend there yesterday and enjoyed a fabulous docent tour with "Flash"! Flash knew all of the aircraft inside and out and had terrific stories about the history of each. I think it would take a week to exhaust his knowledge which is why it's fun to go back again and again. This is the most fun museum I have ever visited. I live an hour and a half away but I'm going to become a member today.

This was an excellent museum to visit. Take the tour it is amazing. There is some walking and you do go up a narrow flight of stairs. At one point, but you don't have to, the planes are amazing and our guide Flash, was excellent. I highly recommend this visit.

Warren was absolutely the best tour guide at the museum! He was extremely knowledgeable and passionate! I had no idea we had a gorgeous piece of history hiding in our backyard here in Virginia. Thank you for a wonderful day!​

We loved our visit to the Military Aviation Museum! They have an impressive collection of planes going back to the beginning of flight, and almost all of them are still in flying condition. we had a very friendly tour guide, Tim, and he had a wealth of knowledge about all the displays. We got lucky and saw the mechanics test firing the engines on a P-40 Warhawk - so cool! We hope to get back for one of the events when some of the planes take to the air. I highly recommend this is you love planes and history!

Excellent place to take a step back in time if you're feeling nostalgic! We took our Dad some time ago for what we thought was just a quick jaunt. Well, this place just brought our Dad to life! As we took him to the hangar, his eyes lit up and he began to walk around marveling at the array of planes dating as far back as WWI... It was as if he was meeting old friends! He relished the beauty of each and every plane and read about each one's history and importance. We practically had to drag him out! So when we brought him to the Dinosaur park at the entrance and egress of the museum grounds, we took photos of him with all the dinosaurs !! He was a sport about it but I remember Hae asked us to bring him back again the next day!! So this place is definitely a must for any fans of history, planes, or just nostalgia!! The docents are phenomenal!!! You can tell they are absolutely passionate about what they do!! So check this place out!! It is FUN!!

At first, it seems like this museum is pretty small. The indoor exhibit area isn't huge, but it's interesting. The real treat is the hangar space- they have a massive collection of old war birds and a great volunteer staff. If you're uncomfortable with prominently displayed Nazi imagery or you have young children, prepare to have that conversation and/or avoid visiting the German hangar. I think this place is fantastic, but they are not sensitive in their displays of symbols of violence. It is my only quibble with an excellent institution. Be aware of special events here! Every year they put on a great air show the weekend before Memorial Day weekend called War Birds Over the Beach. If you're into old planes, historical re-enactment, and/or 20th century conflicts, you can't miss it. You never know when you'll see the last of its kind take to the air. They bring in musical performers with historical repertoires and food trucks for the weekend and they throw a dance with a live big band. You'll come across people dressed like they walked out of a fleet of time machines, so it's a great time to pull out your rockabilly dress or your flight suit. Parking is free and there's plenty of it.

My son is an aviation enthusiast and this place was perfect to fill his curiosity. He spoke to several volunteers and enjoyed his time here. It was a great day for him!

I had a 30 min plane ride on 7 Jul 2024. The experience was exhilarating to say the very least. From scheduling (Caroline) the briefing (Dennis), Dave (Ghengis) Khan, and Gooch the pilot. All were extremely professional. I intend to go up again just because it was that much fun. The ride was too short, I didnt want to land. Gooch made me feel at ease from the beginning, and during the flight he even allowed me to fly the aircraft for a few minutes. If you get a chance to go for a ride, all I can say is DO IT!!!!! You will not be sorry

Great way to spend a day learning about historic aviation. Plenty of parking and very very knowledgeable staff!

The aircraft in the museum were very interesting, their military significance profound. I took the ride on the 1941 Boeing Stearman biplane and it was a marvelous experience. Flying in an open cockpit gives the experience of the early years of aviation. My children bought the flight as a gift for me thinking I would enjoy it. They underestimated the sheer joy I had.

Outstanding collection of planes, mostly in flyable condition, from the first 50 years of aviation. The main museum had two hangars, and there is a guided tour of a triple hangar and then a German hangar (both the building and planes are museum exhibits) and a reassembled British watch office all alongside a 5000' grass airstrip. So many planes! Docents are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Exhibits are described clearly and concisely by well-researched signs. We spent 3 hours, which was just barely enough time to scan the entire collection. Admission $17 for adult, and totally worth it. More oriented toward adults than kids, because planes are "look but don't touch". Free parking, and nice picnic area nearby (amid the dinosaurs and fountain).

I have never had a bad time here. Always well worth it and a great thing to do on a lazy weekend afternoon. This is a private collection so I really need thing is that all the planes are maintained by volunteers and they all fly. It is a little off the beaten path. Well past the stores and restaurants in Pungo but the drive is picturesque and goes by pretty quick. Check the website since they have tons of special events there such as classical music and concerts. Special memory for me was before my dad passed we went there and the staff couldn't of been better with my dad who was on a wheel chair. He knew all the planes and told my daughter great stories. If the planes are flying it is really spectacular to see the grounds of neat clean well-maintained parking is tight but I've never had an issue I can't recommend this place enough

I'm almost embarrassed that I've grown up here and managed to let this gem of a museum escape my attention. This awesome museum has loads of airplanes that are fully functional and still are flown from time to time. They are all original planes which are a private collection by a local businessman whose hobby is collecting various war planes. It's a very impressive collection that includes tanks. We arrived pretty late in the day, with limited time (12/02/17). The gentlemen that work there were all so very kind, accommodating and welcoming. They were upfront and informed us that there is plenty to see, especially if you LOVE planes, so they suggested that we check out the first hangar to the left past the gift shop and the lobby area and informed us of the second hangar close by but let us know that we could maneuver in there but warned us that with a wheelchair it's not very conducive . They were great with helping us manage our short time available. They even gave us a little tour explaining the various planes. They have some placards but I felt it was even better having a curator with us where we could ask questions! We saw and learned so much in a quick 45 minutes. I'll definitely come back again to see the rest of the planes. They even do air shows three times a year with one starting in May. I have seen occasional events held here posted on Facebook but never made it out here until now. I believe my wedding singer, Frank aka Frank sings Frank even did a show here I do suggest arriving early to the museum to allow for more time to explore. They have entertaining photo props as well in the lobby. I would like to thank all the gentlemen we encountered and those that gave us a mini tour and shed some light on the planes a huge thank you !! You may have thought your small gestures were nothing, but to us (my sister and I and my dad )it meant EVERYTHING!! He's 85 years old and I was looking for something different to do while getting him out of the house and decided to take him here. He's a Navy veteran and so i'm sure he got a kick out of seeing these planes and recalling history. Thanks for providing us with the warm welcomes and care even though we got there almost a quarter after four. We asked my dad if he had fun afterwards and he answered "PLENTY!!" This is a truly fascinating museum with active working planes. I am by no means a plane or history buff but it surprisingly piqued my interest and I got to see a plane made out of wood! PS There are some Dinosaur statues at the front of the road prior to reaching the museum. They looked super cool and fun to take photos but unfortunately the sun was setting and we hadn't even seen the museum yet. So next time!!

The volunteers we had encountered with were amazing and so knowledgeable. I'm giving this a 3 because of the lady that was giving out the tickets. She was very disrespectful and rude. No patients. Gave everyone dirty looks and huffed when people were asking questions. Even my husband was in shock who doesn't notice or let things like that bother him. The second floor was very bare and empty. However my kids still enjoyed flying the planes on the stimulators. My oldest (8) and husband loved seeing and learning about the different planes. We wish that we could have at least been able to sat in one. For a family of 7 it was $42.00. We payed for two military adults and two kids over the age of 6. Our three youngest were free which was nice. Also huge thank you Warren our tour guide, and Scott. You guys incredible and definitely turned our experience around!!!!

We visited in June while on vacation and I found this was incredibly informative piece of history. We had a wonderful docent who was polite, intelligent & professional. Answered all of our questions and a kind, patient man. However, we walked by the Fokker Factory, I mean fighter factory air hanger when our docent stopped us and made a few comments. Some d-bag mechanic with a handlebar mustache and clearly a very small um, "engine" named "Al" attempted to emasculate our docent by pointing his finger in his face and raising his voice "You don't bring people to this hanger!" It was hot and clearly the hanger doors were open but none of us crossed the doors threshold. My partner turned to me and said "he must be the one with a license plate that says : GRUDGFK". Dude, this docent is here as a volunteer and a veteran... show him respect. Period. Anyway, the rest of the tour was wonderful, just steer clear of the dudes in the fighter factory... geez.

All the years I've lived in the area, and I never made it here till April 2019. If you're in the area visiting or live in the Tidewater area - go for a visit. Great for the plane lover, old military vet or anyone with young children and want to get close to a real plane. We took our time and it took about 2 1/2 hours to get through it all . The helpers/volunteers were so very nice and very informative. Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed.

Well worth the time. Take the guided tour as you will not regret it. Amazing that many of these planes still fly today.

This museum might a little secret gem in the area to some people. All the planes are flying relics. Probably the coolest museum the the area. If you plan on going, go during the Warbirds Over the Beach event or other event. They had live music of the past, aircraft demonstrations, military reenactments, food, vendors, and dancing. Take the whole family next time.

What an impressive place this is! I had no idea how much history and beautiful aircraft they had right here in Virginia Beach! I am mad at myself for waiting this long to visit so if you are reading this and haven't been, do yourself a favor and go! We went to the museum today specifically for a special event they were having which was a major classic car show! With over 300+ cars and the aircraft, there was so much to do and see that we spent hours there! The car show is in its 9th year and is a great way to come out to the museum and have a blast! As for the museum itself, I could not believe the amount of aircraft they had and all the stories behind each piece! It was amazing to see these massive machines close up! Another perk of attending the event today was being able to see two different planes actually take off! One of which was a WWII plane which is one of three in the world that can actually take flight! It was spectacular and we got chills being able to hear this history machine fire up and take off! We were literally watching such an important piece of history take flight! The museum also has a ton of kid-friendly areas so it is definitely appropriate for families! History buff or not, you will leave there knowing something you didn't before all while having the opportunity to see and touch history!

Was pretty good to spend an uneventful Saturday afternoon. The in-laws were fascinated with the planes, and my infant enjoyed the Jerrassic Park outside of the entrance.

Nice wwii aircraft museum. There some great aircraft here, many of which still fly! There are even some authentic buildings that have been dismantled and transported from Europe and reconstructed here. Not just American aircraft are represented; Italian, Japanese and German aircraft as well. The gift shop is ok, definitely could do better in what's offered. The museum would also benefit from more interactive exhibits... right now you are heavily advised/warned about touching virtually anything. It is a bit overwhelming and off-putting to a point that it seems as though it's a bunch of old white guys who are tolerating you being there... just happy to take your money to fund their hobby. They really need to be more welcoming and work on some charm and customer service. I understand that there are some delicate aircraft on display and such, however it could be conducted in a better manner. It's worth the visit but may not be all that entertaining for kids or wives.

I recently attended a military retirement ceremony here and I was really impressed. It was held in one of the hangars and they moved the planes for us to sit inside nestled around these old war planes. How neat! It was a beautiful morning, perfect weather, and all the staff inside were very friendly and helpful. After the ceremony we were free to explore the museum so I took the time to go into both hangars and walk around the old planes - it's really neat to see some of the pretty rare Nazi and Japanese war planes they have acquired for this location. Also, some of these planes are still functional and they will take you up in them for a flight. Upstairs there are some cool exhibits with an actual Enigma machine and a wall dedicated to women in aviation which I really enjoyed reading. It's a beautiful location out in Pungo (which I love) nearby to tons of farms and farmers markets. I plan to bring my dad here next time he comes - I think he'll love it.

This is by far one of the most hidden gems of museum's there is. I have been coming here for years and have never been disappointed till my last visit last week. Let me explain, in years past you could walk up and look at all the aircraft that is in the museum. Now these plans are all gems and most are fly able. So they do have to go in for maintenance on a regular schedule in order to continue to fly. This means taken them to them Fighter Factor which is the hanger that all maintenance is performed. In the past you could go in on a tour and at least look at these plans while standing in a designated area. But last week the Rules have changed and not for the good of people visiting. Now if an aircraft is in the Fighter Factor and under going maintenance you are NOT allowed to even go to the windows and look in for fear of being shot!! Yes that's right if they are in there (Special) Fighter Factor Hanger you are out of luck trying to see them. What made me so mad was I drove 4 hours to visit the museum and couldn't see several of the planes that I was truly looking forward to see. The people working there were all understanding for my disappointment but said there was nothing they could do. The Fighter Factory has made the rule that doors to public are keep closed and windows are also off limits for viewing anything. I Love this museum and enjoy looking at all the aircraft and being able to get close up and see and just feel the history these aircraft have. It is worth the small cost to enter this place. And worth the drive to come see it all, and I mean all you can spend a entire day here having fun Looking at aircraft and other exhibits they have on display.

This place was great for the whole family. My plane crazed kiddos got to ooh and ahh at all the cool planes while my husband and I got to listen to all the historical facts. We spent most of our time with a volunteer named Bob who was just wonderful. He was patient with all our questions and gracious with my affectionate, touchy kids. I'm only bummed we missed the tour (kids can't hang).

I went to the museum with my wife and another couple. We all loved it! I am an uber WWII airplane geek so I knew I would love it but my wife really enjoyed herself as well. The best deal going in the area! The docents will give you all the information you want to know about these magnificent aircraft. I couldn't believe we were allowed to walk so close to aircraft that are fly able. They were flying a P51 while we're there and if that doesn't get your blood pumping you aren't alive. The facilities are exceptionally well maintained, the birds are in superb condition. Navy, Army, German, Soviet, Italian warbirds....German experimental, a V-1, ground vehicles.... Kids and kids at heart will love this. Oh yeah, they have a great dinosaur park at the front of the property which kids will love. We even walked the grounds and took photographs and enjoyed the scenery.

The kids love this place. Very interesting, fun and friendly. Great family fun. A must see.

I love history and the planes were neat enough. Some Old nazi cars and planes here too. The four star review is for the very knowledgeable volunteer that explained everything to me but Also followed me around hovering the entire time not letting me have time To think or reflect or absorb any information. Would have enjoyed some time to myself to walk around and read things too. Also would have enjoyed being there with my toddler if I could have had more interaction with her to talk about things we are seeing but this guy wouldn't let me get a word on edge wise. We promptly left.

This museum features a robust collection of military planes and related equipment. The staff and docents are very friendly and highly knowledgeable. It is a large, spread out facility that allows you to enjoy at your own pace without the feeling of an overwhelming crowd encompassing you. The free dinosaur exhibit is an excellent bonus for children. This is my 4 y.o.'s favorite museum in Hampton Roads.
