We came for dinner around 6pm - early birds, we were hungry. A stunning spot, if ever I saw one. I love the mix of industrial, residential and waterfront view. Clearly it gets a decent amount of sun for most of the day, and it wasn't until around 7pm that we finally made the call to head inside, mostly due to the wind. The olives on the menu are beautiful and salty, and I was ridiculously happy with that.
It's a sharing plate style restaurant, so we mixed and matched a few of the smaller plates with the larger ones. The seared tuna was great, perhaps a little overdone. The flesh felt a little bit tougher than I had anticipated, I wanted it to be a bit more delicate, but hey, it's worth a try. The sesame crust had just the right amount of crunch too, but not the right amount of kick, as I tasted none of the wasabi mentioned on the menu.
Speaking of crunch, the dukkha crusted chicken strips definitely had that. Again, the meat was a little overdone, with the chicken just a bit too tough for my liking. In saying that, I loved that it was dukkha crusted rather than just plain, boring old chicken strips that you'd serve to your five year old. Grown up chicken strips!
A true highlight was the pork belly. Gelatinous, fatty goodness with a perfect amount of crunch of top. As it should, it melted under my knife when I despairingly cut it in two (seriously, this is the time when you resent share-plate restaurants).
Dinner was followed by one of the most mouth-watering scoops of salted caramel ice cream I have ever had. You know how all too often you order salted caramel ice cream to find it is neither salted, nor caramel? Yeah, same. This wasn't. This was perfect. I'd like to say they make it in house, but probably not. I foolishly forgot to ask if I could purchase it from anywhere else, but if all else fails, I'll be making it myself.
My only complaint (other than the water glass remaining empty for considerable periods of time, but I am forgiving(ish)) was that the side salads on all three dishes were the same. Was it our ordering? I don't recall, but perhaps. Or maybe they serve the same fresh-tasting coleslaw side salad with everything, whereas I was looking for some different flavour combinations to really see what the restaurant could do. That said, Adrian disagreed, and liked the continuity between all three dishes. Personal taste, I guess. Either way, it's a great spot if you're needing somewhere to stop off in Napier, and I hear it does an excellent breakfast!
