I just returned from a one night stay at the Mill Street Inn and here are my thoughts:
Pros:
-Location (the Inn is located within walking distance of Thames and all of the downtown Newport attractions - it was nice to be able to get to and from everything in only a 3-4 min walk)
- Parking (parking in Newport is a hassle and having free parking in such a great area is a plus.)
- Service (I've read some negative reviews about the hotel's staff, but everyone I encountered was polite, helpful, and kind. I also liked that there was turndown service!)
- Breakfast (now, I'm not trying to assert that the breakfast was great, because it certainly wasn't. However, being able to grab a tea, some fruit and some yogurt before hitting the Cliff Walk is great, especially when it's free.)
Cons:
- Room 101 (the room was spacious and decently appointed, with cathedral ceilings and ceiling fans. It also had two large windows, both of which overlooked the parking lot. Because room 101 is located on the first floor, not only do you look out onto the parking lot, but you can make eye contact with anyone exiting their car. Suffice it to say, we had to keep the curtains drawn throughout the entire stay. Request a different room.)
- Bed (I can't speak for all of the beds at this hotel, but ours was tired and old. Not only were the sheets scratchy, but the bed sloped at an alarmingly uncomfortable angle, which led to a lot of discomfort the following day.)
- Bathroom (Why do hotels fit their bathrooms with pedestal sinks? Most travelers bring their own toiletries and would appreciate some counter space. It's worth noting that the toiletries provided by the inn were very nice, but I could've used more counter space. In addition, even after running the shower for more than five minutes, the water reached "lukewarm" temperatures at best and the shower head, a hand-held that was mounted, kept moving as if it had taken on a mission to spray the out-of-tub area).
All in all, I don't think this is a terrible place to stay. We were moderately comfortable for our stay, and if you're planning to be out and about in downtown Newport for most of your time, this is probably a decent pick. Just try to find a deal on a room, as I don't think the $379 we paid (including tax) was worth it.
