After reading about how the Mitsui line of hotels is a reputable chain of Japanese hotels, I figured this hotel would be a safe bet, certainly at least in regards to cleanliness. I was, however, quite disappointed with the cleanliness immediately as I entered the room.
First of all, all standard queen rooms with the bath shower only face the interior of the building, meaning there is no view at all. This fact will not be readily apparent on the third-party booking website websites, but only if you look at the room specifications on the official Mitsui website.
Second of all, there are a plethora of wear and tear changes throughout the room e.g wallpaper, baseboards that would benefit from retouching. After shifting through other reviews dating up to a few years back, this does not seem uncommon, so I am curious about how seriously upper management actually considers and addresses these concerns.
Third, I found the state of the bathroom to be the least up to par with Japanese cleanliness standards as compared to the handful of accommodations I stayed at throughout my two week trip in Japan, including a 2 star hostel. The detachable showerhead is in dire need of a deep clean as you can see the calcium deposition in the photos. The detachable showerhead holder also had a lot of grime building up on it. Overall, the frosted glass encasing of the shower has shown its wear overtime, as there are watermarks from top to bottom.
I will give kudos to the staff member who immediately offered to arrange a room change— whether or not the room is any cleaner has yet to be determined.
Overall, for this price point, I would not stay here again. I think it would be beneficial to stay at a hotel that is more newly constructed as the wear and tear over the years is becoming quite obvious with this particular Millenium Mitsui Ginza hotel, and it does not appear that the housekeeping staff have been trained to work with attention to detail.
