A long-overdue reflection on a truly memorable weekend at Millgate House.||It is difficult to capture the essence of Millgate House in words. Yes, the dazzling décor, the abundance of character, the period pieces (including the vast array of clocks—grand and small), the magnificent garden, are all enchanting. But the real magic lies in something less tangible: a richness, a spirit, that sets Millgate House apart.||Perhaps it’s the glimpse into the kitchen before breakfast, alive with quiet industry. Or the stillness of the drawing room, where the steady tik-tik-tik of a grandfather clock carries you gently away from the outside world. Whatever it is, Millgate House offers not just a stay, but a retreat—an escape into a few days of calm enchantment.||We had a wonderful weekend meandering through the bustle of Richmond Square with its lively charm, and wandering further afield into the rolling beauty of Swaledale. Yet, as ever, the real enchantment awaited us back at Millgate.||If you are fortunate enough to visit while Tim and Austin are at home, you begin to understand the source of Millgate’s unique and magical character—it is woven not only into the house itself, but into the warmth and spirit of its hosts. To stay here is not simply to visit a place, but to be welcomed into something rare and deeply special. ||Every detail of a stay at Millgate is tended to with genuine care and attention. Each room feels thoughtfully prepared, breakfast is a feast of delicious choices, and the staff who help bring it all together are unfailingly courteous—a true credit to Tim and Austin, and an integral part of Millgate's character. ||Be sure to ask your hosts about the latest transformation in the garden. There is always something new to discover in its winding paths and hidden corners. On this visit, I was captivated by the giant lilies, holding court with dramatic elegance. ||In essence, to spend time at Millgate is to step out of the ordinary and into something all together more magical. It is a place where time seems to slow, and every moment lingers long after you’ve left.
