I wanted to take my partner somewhere fun and a little upscale for our tenth anniversary, so I decided on The Millworks. It was easy to make a reservation online, and when I needed to change the date and time, that adjustment was easy, too.
We arrived a bit early and checked out the gallery and shop before being seated. Although we didn't make any art purchases this time, I love knowing this creative space exists, and I look forward to patronizing it in the future.
We started with some drinks, including a rye Old Fashioned (from the menu) and the Summer Berry 75. Both were smooth, flavorful, and easy to sip on. Plus, they were pretty.
For an appetizer, we got fried green tomatoes. We anticipated a few thicker slabs of tomatoes, but what came out was a plentiful amount of thinner, smaller fried slices. This provided crispy breading in every bite. The ramp ranch dip that came with it was a fun addition that really enhanced the dish.
I got the 16-hour ramen, and man, that is good stuff. Every part of it is delicious: the broth, the noodles, the brisket, the kimchi, the touch of hot sauce... No notes. Just warm umami goodness.
My partner couldn't decide on an entree, and at the waitress' suggestion, ended up going with the meatloaf. The meatloaf had a crispy exterior and moist interior. The seasonal vegetables were sautéed and flavorful. The mashed potatoes were "****in' bangin'" (aka creamy and delicious). The onion gravy was different than expected but exceptionally good. The platter's portion was also a really generous serving--they didn't skimp on anything on the plate.
We'd read good things about the mac & cheese, so we got a crock of that to share, as well. The pasta was perfectly cooked, the cheese sauce was multi-dimensional and smooth, and I loved the baked, crusty bits of cheese along the edge of the crock. Mac & cheese aficionados should try this. 10/10.
Lastly, we treated ourselves to dessert. This was a peanut butter brownie with a scoop of Fox Meadow Creamery ice cream. This was probably the least exciting part of the meal. The brownie was cut out and placed in a skillet, so it was warm but not a skillet brownie. The peanut butter mousse was tasty but the scoop on top of the brownie was small. The scoop of ice cream was generous, but dwarfed the brownie. None of this was bad--and if the rest of the meal had been a little less impressive, the brownie and ice cream probably would have been a high point.
Overall, we had a great visit and look forward to going back when we have something to celebrate again!
