The 5 Best Hostels in Kuala Lumpur (Updated 2025)

"I stayed in the Chinatown Hostel in the heart of Chinatown and found it a fun, social backpacker spot that makes it easy to meet and mingle; Chinatown has tons of cheap and delicious places to eat, so it's a great base for foodies. The hostel has a shared kitchen and café, staff-organized activities to help you see the city and connect with people, and the dorm beds have privacy curtains, comfy mattresses, plus lights and outlets to charge your stuff. It's one of the most popular hostels in town and is recommended as the best hostel for solo female travelers, with female-only dorms." - Matthew Kepnes

I stayed here for 6 nights and overall had an amazing time. If you want a hostel to socialise, meet people from all over the world (including many friendly foreigner travelers), this is hands-down the best spot in KL. Definitely a 5-star vibe for community and atmosphere! However, not everything was perfect. The manager (the heavier man) and the lady at the front desk with glasses were quite rude and gave off an unfriendly, almost angry attitude. Honestly, dealing with them felt uncomfortable. On the other hand, Dave at the reception is one of the kindest and most helpful people you’ll ever meet—try to go to him for anything you need, he makes the experience smooth. From my personal impression, there also seemed to be a bit of bias against guests from India or countries with Black communities, which didn’t feel right. That said, the social atmosphere, events, and people you meet here make up for the negatives. Overall: Great hostel for social life, just be mindful who you deal with at the desk.

Very social and popular, very good price and good location for food and services and the markets. We stayed here each time we were in KL. There is a reason it is so popular. Its clean and great. Can be noisy but there are a range of quiet and loud rooms. The staff try to help as much as they can. You cannot get a refund for your booking if you book in person

Had a great time at this hostel as a solo traveller. A funky hostel with an amazing atmosphere. The staff were incredible with plenty of activities including guided walking tours and bar crawls. Very social, would recommend to anyone willing to have a good time in this city.

We enjoyed attending the BBQ here as we got to chat to some kind other travellers and we enjoyed the social vibe. Our first private room was cheaper than the second one we had to move to but so much quieter. It’s a shame because the first two nights we slept really well and then the last two when we had to transfer rooms we paid quite a bit more money but got less sleep. Even with earplugs I think we’d have struggled. A nice hostel in a good location but the second room we stayed in would definitely benefit from better soundproofing/double glazed windows as we could hear everything outside and woke up several times in the night. Also wanted to make sure people know about the 15 ringgit pp breakfast menu 8-11am as we only knew about the free coffee until our last morning.

This place has everything you need for a perfect backpacker experience in KL The indoor bar is super cozy, great drinks, chill vibes, and the perfect spot to meet fellow travellers They also have daily events that make it easy to socialize and have fun. The environment is really welcoming and vibrant, with cool decor and comfy spaces to hang out. Plus, the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful they go above and beyond to make you feel at home and made my stay unforgettable. Keep being awesome Highly recommend for solo travellers or anyone looking for a good time in the heart of Chinatown

Loved my stay here. The location is epic and the building itself is stunning—full of charm and character. The staff create such a welcoming, social vibe, with great events that make it super easy to meet people, especially if you’re travelling solo. Big shoutout to Nate—he’s incredibly kind and brings a great energy that really sets the tone. Highly recommend if you’re looking for connection and good vibes.

I stayed in a 2-female bedroom for 5 nights. The bed was very confy, no noise at all, very fresh air inside the bedroom. Washrooms are clean and nice. Rooftop and swimming pool great. Position in Chinatown just great. Only thing: if you want to wash your things then cant dry them in the bedroom, which is cold. If you dry them outside, consider the risk to be stolen (NOTHING MATTERING THE HOSTEL, just take care) Recommended at all!!

Really nice hostel! They’ve done a great job with the design, the beds are comfy, and the staff is very kind. The vibe is chill and they organize activities almost every day, which makes it easy to meet people. Great location too, surrounded with many of tasty street food stalls. I’d definitely stay here again.
