Since I started my pursuit of visiting as many UNESCO heritage sites as I can, This church was on my first list of must-visits. This is because I hail from Pangasinan, and Ilocos Sur isn't that far.
So fast forward to many years from then, I've always made it a point to visit this amazing basilica every time we would go north.
I already lost track of how many times I already visited this place. I already stopped counting because well, my heart just simply longs to see it whenever I'd pass by the area.
This church isn’t just a pretty building; it’s a key part of the local culture. It’s a hub for religious events, hosting all sorts of ceremonies, masses, and celebrations that are essential to the community’s spiritual life. It also stands as a testament to the area’s rich history and heritage, showcasing the lasting impact of Spanish colonialism.
With its distinctive Earthquake Baroque architecture and its stunning hilltop view, it’s a point of pride for locals and attracts tourists eager to appreciate its beauty and historical importance.
Plus, during traditional festivals and cultural events, the church becomes a gathering spot that helps strengthen community ties and keep local traditions alive.
What a remarkable site that beautifully blends history, culture, and architecture!
