The Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu, commonly called Basilica del Santo Niño, is a historic Roman Catholic church in Cebu City, Philippines. It is one of the oldest churches in the country and a major pilgrimage site, famous for housing the Santo Niño de Cebu, a 16th-century statue of the Child Jesus.
Founded: 1565 by Spanish explorers led by Miguel López de Legazpi, making it the first Christian settlement and church in the Philippines.Santo Niño de Cebu: The basilica enshrines a small statue of the Child Jesus, gifted by Ferdinand Magellan to Rajah Humabon’s wife upon their conversion to Christianity. This makes it the oldest religious relic in the Philippines.
Heritage Status: Declared a minor basilica in 1965 by Pope Paul VI during the 400th anniversary of Christianity in the Philippines.
