Patagonia: Thoughts on Getting Offline and Trying to Camp

"On the park's most famous 22 km round-trip hike I found the Torres Towers to be picture-perfect — three granite, ice-covered spires rising above an aquamarine glacial lake that could have been a desktop wallpaper — and I lingered at the lookout for two hours to clear my head and simply enjoy the view before descending as clouds rolled in." - Matthew Kepnes

Hiking to the base of Torres del Paine was absolutely incredible. The views of the iconic towers are breathtaking, and the trail is well-marked and maintained, making the experience accessible for most reasonably fit hikers. The scenery along the way — turquoise lakes, glaciers, and rugged mountains — is simply unforgettable. Even though the hike can be challenging at times, reaching the base makes it all worthwhile. Facilities at the base and along the trail are basic but functional, and the sense of being immersed in nature is unbeatable. It’s the perfect place to disconnect and fully appreciate the beauty of Patagonia.

Absolutely breathtaking, worth every step. Could get very windy up top, bring warm layers especially you’re there for the sunrise golden hour

Worthwhile hike to an amazing viewpoint. When you arrive go down to some of the larger rocks by the waters edge for a peaceful viewpoint. It gets steep and you may be scrambling over rocks at points. Tip - stop the night at Chilean Refugio to try and go over two days to give best opportunity to view towers - afternoon you arrive and morning you leave

The views up there are amazing! But the most crowded trail I had ever seen. Long lines on the way down and people with zero etiquette, wouldn't let faster hikers pass.

Amazing view. Climbed here in November of 2023 and it's not too strenuous of a climb (in my opinion since I grew up in the mountains). However, I made the mistake of not bringing trekking poles (I've unfortunately become a city girl) and strained my knees going down. Very embarrassing having everyone pass me while my knees were dying.

I'm still giving this 5 stars, but this hike was fairly challenging due to the rain and snow at the top. Recommend leaving extremely early if you want a good view of the towers, because the day we went, it was extremely cloudy and snowy. It was freezing at the top and we were already soaked from the rain, and the last mile or so is particularly tumultuous. Still would recommend as the hike is beautiful, but I wish we would have gotten a better view of the torres.

Wow what a hike! We started on the trial at 6am. We are so happy we did because when we got to the top, there was very few people. It’s a gnarly day hike of 13 miles and 4500 feet of elevation but we enjoyed every second of it. Took about 7 hours total with 30 min break at the top!

The trek is quite long and difficult at the end. Both ways with some stops for food and drinks you will need a good 8 hours. But it is worth it. Beautiful views on the way. But it is often very windy, and temperature can change quickly, so make sure you wear layers of clothes to easily take them off and put them on again. Also be sure to bring something waterproof - fast changing weather can surprise you.
