Miss Peppercorn 花椒小姐

This is hands-down one of the best Chinese restaurants in Christchurch. We live 25km away but happily go out of our way to eat here. The food is consistently excellent. We’ve explored most of the menu and like to try a couple of new dishes each visit - and have never been disappointed. But our favourites are the Biang Biang Noodles and the Pork & Prawn Dumplings, both handmade and absolutely delicious. The service has always been friendly, even when the place is packed (which says a lot about how popular and well-loved this spot is!).

The food was outstanding, and the staff went above and beyond to fit us in at a table. The service was truly five-star from start to finish. Everything we ordered was amazing, and I would absolutely recommend eating here to anyone. If you’re on the fence, don’t hesitate definitely come!

Visited MrPippaCorn on a hot, sunny day and tried the Bang Bang Noodle. The noodles were perfectly chewy, and the sauce was incredible—authentic, flavorful, with just the right amount of numbness from the Sichuan pepper. The only downside? Protein was a bit light for $19. Overall, pretty satisfying—a great spot for anyone craving bold, authentic noodles.

It was our first time dining here, the atmosphere was casual and relaxed, the service was great and the food exceptional. All the flavours were perfectly balanced and everything was very tasty. We especially loved the Claypot chicken! Great value for money, we’ll definitely come back to try some more dishes!

Our Friday evening at Miss Peppercorn was truly disappointing. The quality of the food we ordered was below mid as the mamas braised beef was like a salty dry stew we could’ve made at home in the crockpot and had days of leftovers for less than the 30$ it cost with rice added (why it doesn’t just come with is random?). Abhorrent prices for what you get. The starters were extremely lacklustre also, ordering duck wontons that had mostly oily wonton rather than duck filling. The chicken was below average aswell. To pay $70 for this plus two cokes felt really disgraceful after suggesting to the staff member our distaste with our evening. She refused to believe we didn’t enjoy because she asked everyone else how everything was. Gaslighting us and refusing to give a discount on the barely touched, not at all worth it food. But we paid saying we won’t be recommending or coming back ever again. Don’t bother with miss peppercorn if you want to make sure the food you are buying and consuming from a restaurant is worth your hard earned money, unlike our experience here. 👎

We ordered a biang biang noodle, dumplings, and a stir-fried noodle. Everything was good until it came time to pay the bill. We noticed we were charged extra for chicken that we did not order. When the stir-fried noodle was served, we did wonder why there was chicken in the dish, as we had ordered prawns with the noodles. However, since it was our first time there, we didn’t think too much about it, as it’s not uncommon in Asia for dishes to include both chicken and shrimp. We only realised the issue when we saw the bill. The wait staff was very kind and apologized, explaining that he had accidentally added chicken to the order and said he would fix it for us. However, the lady at the checkout was unhappy about this. Even after the waiter explained that it was his mistake, she corrected the bill but then told us that we should have informed them about the chicken and implied that we were being dishonest. We were speechless. If we had been dishonest, we could have claimed that there was no chicken in the dish at all, which was not the case. The food was good, but there are many other good/ better Sichuan restaurants in Christchurch. Due to the lady’s attitude, I would not recommend this place unless you happen to be in the area. Otherwise, I wouldn’t bother coming here.

Having been to Chengdu twice, I was missing the flavours and wonderful 麻辣 flavour profile of Sichuan province. This is easily the best I’ve had in NZ. Would highly recommend. Only downside was that it they were quite busy so took a moment to get our order in, but the food all arrived very quickly afterwards.
