10 Best Places for Brunch in Portland, Maine | Condé Nast Traveler

"From the porcelain exterior and hardwood booths inside to the stainless steel panels, Miss Portland Diner, which has been around since 1949, is every inch the real deal. You’ll find all the usual diner suspects at Miss Portland—as well as a few unusual ones: satisfying, hearty corned beef hash with eggs and buttery toast; soups of the day (don't miss the white bean), and a sweet-peppery house-made coleslaw. Other signatures include the Shamrock omelet, stuffed with corned beef hash, grilled onions, and cheddar; or the open-faced Downeast Reuben, which replaces corned beef with fried local haddock. The giant cakes are all made by local bakeries." - Alexandra Hall

Google
This Time Capsule diner is a definite MUST SEE of you are hungry and want to see a 1949 Worcester Diner! The food was tasty, and the service was nothing short of stellar! And it's right off the Highway and very close to the Historic Old Port District of Portland!

Google
I had an absolutely wonderful experience at Misa Portland Diner. Our server, Kirk, was amazing, friendly, attentive, and made the visit even more enjoyable. The food is beyond delicious, with an incredible, natural flavor that you can really taste. What makes it even more special is that many of the ingredients are grown by them, which gives every dish a fresh, authentic touch. Honestly, this is the best place I’ve eaten at in a very long time. Highly recommended!

Google
Best diner food I’ve ever had in my entire life. Best breakfast I’ve ever had. Will definitely be back. Great food, great service, great music, great vibe. I love this place so much!!!

Google
We stopped for some brunch working our way through Portland. Our waitress was friendly, and we were served relatively quickly. We had just got there a little after noon, and according to their menu, Eggs Benedict is not offered after that time. However, I'm assuming because it's so popular, I was able to get it, which made me happy. Everything is very reasonably priced.

Google
We really enjoyed our breakfast at this diner during our trip to Portland. Delicious breakfast including blueberry pancakes, eggs (we recommend scrambled with your choice of cheese), and breakfast potatoes. Service was friendly but slow, so make sure you have ample time. Recommend sitting in the dining car portion for full ambience. Plenty of parking onsite. All in all we would be happy to go back, I’ll dream of those blueberry pancakes. Portions are large but entrees are pricey with drinks.

Google
Fantastic food, classic diner atmosphere, lunch wasn’t super busy but still had great breakfast food. The only place I’ve found that has great biscuits and gravy (sausage, peppered gravy too) so far.

Google
Such a treat to see a piece of history so well restored! Had amazing breakfast, the 25min wait on a Saturday morning is absolutely reasonable to enjoy your meal and take in a bit of history. Service was great, despite a super busy time of day. Food - AWESOME. If you love breakfast diners -definitely this one is worth it!

Google
Great Diner in Portland. They have an old train wagon where you can sit ans have your food. Food was great and the portions where huge. Stuff is friendly and very welcoming. You can buy there mugs but unfortunately they were sold out at this time. Would definitely come again.

Yelp
What a great little diner! Found it on a girls blog before we travelled to Portland and it did not disappoint! We showed up around 9ish on a Wednesday- it was busy, but they had some seats left in both the main restaurant and the dining cart- we opted for the traditional booth style in the cart. So cute!! The staff was so nice- food was so good- literally ate everything! Would definitely recommend and would suggest you don't go too late because when we were leaving the line was already out the door and people were waiting outside.

Yelp
Well... no point in maintaining a high star-system for the sake of staples and history. Out-of-towners, come without expectations. Worcester Diner hunters, bring cameras. Locals? Meh. Standards are all over the place. Sometimes the potatoes are almost raw and nearly inedible, but sometimes they are perfect. Usually, over-easy eggs are done perfectly, but way overdone on my recent visit. The integrity of service depends heavily on who is working that day. I've had very pleasant and efficient experiences, but also the opposite. I've dramatically decreased my visits over the years. It's a shame, because I enjoy sitting at the counter with a basic breakfast and a bit of reading, but at some point you must ask what you're really paying for.

Yelp
What do you do when your eye appointment is done way before your ride is there? If your appointment is at Maine Eye you walk across the street to the Miss Portland Diner. Despite the fact that my eyes are super dilated I walked in & got a seat at the counter. Alison was great as server; and being able to watch the team was pretty cool. I decided to try the Eggs Benedict-what a surprise. It is now my favorite place for my favorite dish. English muffin toasted just right, perfectly poached eggs and the right amount of Hollandaise. Bonus: the home fries were just right and coffee was also the best!

Yelp
Had an amazing breakfast at this diner! Food was abundant, fresh and delicious. Service was excellent, even though they were packed. This was our first visit, but will not be our last

Yelp
This was one of the best breakfasts I have had in a hot minute! We came on a weekday so it wasn't too crowded. I ordered the bayside breakfast with the fruity pebble pancake special because who can choose between sweet and savory breakfast? Not me! My eggs were perfectly over easy, crispy bacon and amazing home fries! I'm normally a hashbrown girl but these were well seasoned and had a great crisp. The pancakes were also a great size and were so fluffy. I love that unlike other brunch places here, there's no upcharge for real maple syrup. The diner car is adorable. I'll definitely be back for more!

Yelp
5 stars for ambiance, 4 for food! This is your quintessential diner with hearty and filling fare at relatively low prices. Service was friendly and attentive. Coffee was a bit weak but unlimited refills made up for it. I ordered the spinach, mushroom, and Swiss omelette, which was very tasty and generous with the filling. The home fries were great and toast was... toast. Not the most exceptional food but all very yummy and satisfying. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Delicious breakfast. Good service and value. Would go again when in the Portland area.

Yelp
I loved my breakfast at Miss Portland Diner! My husband and I were looking for a breakfast spot on our way out of Portland, and this was the perfect choice. It's outside of the busy bustle of central Portland but still easy to find, and definitely still busy even on a weekday morning. We asked to sit in the train dining car and they obliged, seating us in a cozy booth. Service was quick and friendly! We got their regular coffee, which was very tasty and strong. I tried the Miss P's Breakfast Sandwich, and it was faaaantastic. I love a sweet/savory combination, and this delivered! It's definitely a fork and knife sandwich versus a handheld sandwich. I didn't mind at all, though, and it was perfect for a foggy and cool morning. The breakfast potatoes were a great accompaniment, and I think the portions were extremely generous. My husband tried the Bayside Breakfast with scrambled eggs and blueberry pancakes, which he loved. Their pancakes are excellent! Very fluffy and crisp on the outside. The ambiance was very charming and we loved being in the train car for our tasty breakfast! This was the perfect spot to enjoy a hearty breakfast before hitting the road, and we were full for HOURS. I'd absolutely return to this charming diner on a return visit to Portland.

Yelp
The inside is very retro and cute and they certainly make do with the space for being inside a train car. The food is all very delicious and what you would expect of typical american diner food. The pancakes are a decent size and very buttery and delicious. This is the hangover spot of all hangover spots for the local college crowd and there's frequently a wait time on weekends so be prepared. Relatively inexpensive and straightforward. The brunch crowd and I enjoyed it!

Yelp
I can always count on, when meeting friends for breakfast or lunch, great food with exceptional service. Consistency makes me happy. And what a fun place! Thankful for them, always.

Yelp
I've driven past here a thousand times and have never had the chance to stop in. My son and I were looking for a spot that was opened by 7am, to grab an early breakfast. I didn't realize that their was a whole restaurant extension added onto the diner car. There is much more room than I expected in here. Parking was also easy, as there's a public lot right next door. We opted to sit in the restored dining car. My son thought that was the coolest thing, feeling like we were transported back a few decades. He loved the option to sit at the counter. There was only one waitress working at the time and she was handling the ordering, serving, toasting and buttering all breads for the dishes, making coffee, etc. It seemed like a lot. By the time we left, someone else had a arrived, but she sure could have used the help a bit earlier. She did a good job juggling all of her duties and still remaining personable, but everyone certainly had to wait their turns. The menu and food itself was basic breakfast. The $8 price point on a breakfast sandwich with home fries was more reasonable than you'd find at most places these days. The single pancake was the size of the plate and plenty for my 8 year old. This was a fun experience and I'd recommend popping in. Just don't come to the diner car with large parties or if you are in a rush (:

Yelp
I live close to Miss P and I'm a little embarrassed to say that I don't go there more often! But I definitely get there when friends are in town. In the past I've been happy enough with breakfast items and if you want a decent Reuben sandwich, they're good for that too. Recently I went with some visitors and I gotta say, I think they've stepped up their game a bit because the coffee was much better than I remembered and we all loved our breakfast/brunch items. I had the steak and eggs (yeah, I was hangry), another friend had an absolutely gigantic omelet, and the third in our party had the Miss P's breakfast sandwich, which we all agreed was the standout: a fried egg on French toast with bacon, cheddar, and maple syrup. Normally I'm not a fan of sweet/savory breakfast mixes (sorry, chicken and waffles, I just don't get it), but the cheese really brings it together and you get the syrup (pure Maine of course) in a dipping cup on the side, which works out perfectly. Super fast and cheerful service too, even at the height of summah (this place is popular and from nine through lunch it's usually packed with a line outside). Tip: if you want a coveted outside table aim for midweek (or even better, off-season).

Yelp
Best french toast breakfast sandwich I have ever had. Prices are very reasonable especially for the portion size. Coffee was fresh & hot. Service was incredibly friendly & helpful. Atmosphere delightful and inviting. I will definitely go back!

Yelp
The search for blueberry pancakes while in Maine led us to Miss Portland Diner. So glad it did bc this place was yummy! Set up in an old dining car plus another building attached you can tell this place is well loved by locals. Breakfast so good I didn't even remember to get a photo until I was halfway through the pancakes. After breakfast we were off to the Portland Headlight! There is plenty of free parking.

Yelp
Came here in August and this is what I had to say about it (apologies for not posting here sooner) For anyone who plans to be in Portland (Maine obvs) or needs to stop to eat while traveling through, this is a fantastic diner. We both had turkey BLTs (wheat / white bread difference). We were expecting deli turkey, but they use actual turkey slices. The bacon was perfectly crispy - sometimes diner bacon is floppy/chewy- this was definitely the opposite. Despite being busy, we were seated within 10 min, attended to, and served quickly. They don't rush you, but it's definitely not a place for a moseying meal. They have a great breakfast and lunch selection. Right off the highway. Diners are a favorite for John so we are very glad we got to check that off our list. We'll definitely come back
google avatar

Yelp
i love the fact this is a true diner. but i wasn't super into my meal. the eggs were wet / runny, pancakes tasted like they had baking soda in them. the seasoning on the home fries were good.

Yelp
We visited on a Saturday after walking on the Back Cove Park trail. Although you could walk from the trail's parking lot over to the diner, we took a chance and drove, and we found plenty of free parking. The restaurant was not crowded, and we were immediately seated in a booth in the train car. If you're alone, you can sit at the counter. You can even sit outside if it's a nice day, and plenty of folks did. Miss Portland serves breakfast all day, so even though it was lunchtime, we split a Greek omelet, home fries, and toast. Our server brought us out a plate and had no issues with us splitting the meal. The omelets are large enough to split, and this is a classic Americana diner, which we don't have many of down South. I would recommend Miss Portland after a workout at one of the nearby gyms or a run, walk, or bike ride on the trail.

Yelp
We've had Miss Portland on our 'must-eat' list for years now, but stopped by out of necessity for sustenance this weekend. I was ill, but the husband was ravenous so we agreed to split something and I'm glad we did. The fresh haddock sandwich at this diner is no joke. It is a chonky-boy in every sense of the phrase. Fresh as can be, lightly breaded and enough to feed two - an absolute delight. A soft roll, fresh lettuce and tomatoes, topped with a delightful homemade tartar sauce made this a must-have. OH! ...and the fries!! The friggin' FRIES. These fries are those that you think of days later. Perfectly salted, crisp but not crunchy, not greasy - perfectly delightful. The plate was also garnished with a fresh pickle which I can only assume are made in-house. Tasted like a quick-pickle whereas the flavor was there but it was more cucumber-y than briney. Yum. The plate was $14.99, the service was top-tier and prompt. We thought it closed at 2pm, but looks like their hours extended until 3pm. We'll be back for a proper visit, oh yes we will be back.

Yelp
Lady that waited on me had absolutely zero customer service skills today is 9-7-2025 at 7:30 am behind bar old building not sure of her her name wears glasses needs some training on how to waitress when I walked in there was only 6 ppl I've waitress before for yrs at a much busier place and I'm 45 yrs old she maybe be 24 and I would do circles around her my grandmother worked there for 15 years in her 50s and 60s and she would do circles around this young lady worst waitress I've ever had I'm so sad that the place has come to that! Times have changed but it was always known for good service! food was absolutely amazing as always!

Brien M.

Yelp
I had a delicious, plate-filling blueberry pancake and good coffee. My server at the counter seating was not only professional but she was also friendly and welcoming.
google avatar

Tabitha P.

Yelp
The moment we stepped into the diner we were made to feel welcome and comfortable. The service staff were all wonderful and cheerful. The food was delicious as I knew it would be the line to get in was out to the door but the wait was kept short enough people seemed to linger just long enough to eat. The restaurant had a wonderful feel.

Yelp
My mom & I went here for breakfast while I was visiting her last October 2023. It's an adorable little place, you're siting inside an old train car, it is a very unique experience. The food was very good, I built my own egg scramble/omelette with: Swiss cheese, spinach, broccoli, and pork sausage. It was delicious The service was very quick & friendly too. I can't wait to go back and try something else on their menu.
google avatar

Meagan C.

Yelp
waitress was very prompt with a warm, engaging tone to her voice! most of the food was typical diner quality, the blueberry pancakes were PHENOMENAL!!! 10/10 would recommend...they were so yummy i didn't even have to put butter or syrup (which i am usually so quick to add on LOL). one thing i will say is that we waited a bit for a booth for our party of 6 as most of the seating is smaller tables/booths. the overall setting felt snug, with the booth having just enough room as the establishment isn't that huge!
google avatar

Krista S.

Yelp
Food: Decent breakfast food! I loved my classic eggs Benedict and my family ordered the two eggs with selected protein. Bacon was a bit too salty but otherwise everything cooked really well. Parking: They have their own private lot behind the restaurant. Service: Friendly staff, although when it gets busy they can kind of forget you unless you flag them down. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for just a regular breakfast meal. Nothing fancy, just straight up diner food.

Yelp
During a recent vacation to Maine in late October 2022 - I stopped in to the Miss Portland Diner for breakfast. I was seated in the main area - and ordered the Acadian omelette - with toast and coffee. The omelet had some sort of sausage in it, plus sautéed peppers, onions, and cheese. It was a bit on the greasy/oily side - but tasted good. One of the servers was dressed up for Halloween - in a spider-esque dress and adornments. I complimented her on the costume and asked her if she was a "spider themed woman" or a witch? She responded she could be either. I should have asked permission to take her photo - but I was so enjoying her costume - I forgot to do so. As I was leaving, I called her over - and told her I had a suggestion for her. She smiled and wanted to know what my suggestion was. I suggested, she should label the coffee pots with little signs that said: "Witches Brew," so that when she made the rounds through the dining room - refilling coffees - diners would see that. She seemed to like the idea! Good breakfast joint! Solid, greasy-spoon, diner-grade food! #MissPortlandDiner

Yelp
The key to avoid long wait line is to come early. I went on Sunday morning at 8am and seated immediately. When I left at 9am, there's already steady long line. I remembered few months ago I came around 12 pm and they say the wait time was 2 hours. I don't know about you but waiting for 2 hours for breakfast definitely not on my vocabulary. Very decent coffee, other diner usually served burnt coffee but not Miss Portland. So go get ur cups of Joe here. I ordered Irish benedict, Canadian bacon, 1 blueberry pancake + real maple syrup ( u have to ask ) yum2

Yelp
Love old Diners & Really love old Diners with great food !! This place was top of the list for me. Friendly staff.. quick service .. food was hot on arrival .. and their Homemade Hash was unbelievably delicious! Definitely a Gem in Portland well worth your money. And they have free parking !! Yeah o

Yelp
A great stop after flying in on way to Bar Harbor. Cute little diner with great service and fresh farm to table options! Delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm ever treat myself to pancakes but I'm so glad I did here. The pumpkin & cream cheese stuffed one was incredibly delicious. The freshly cut & perfectly seasoned home fries were excellent too. It's a fun looking restaurant & the staff is very friendly. Definitely a highlight of the vacation in Portland.

Yelp
We were recommended to try this little dinner and so after a trip to Trader Joe's, we gave it a try. It was about 2pm so we split a Ruben and tried the poutine. It was all very good. Ruben was the perfect amount of corned beef, sauerkraut and sauce. I think the sauce was probably homemade because there were fresh chunks of relish in it.... Not %100 tho. It came with fresh, super crunchy thicker potato chips that were awesome. The poutine had turkey gravy, bacon, scallions and cheese curds on fresh cut fries... just poutine goodness. We're going back as soon as possible to have breakfast and to try the homemade hash. Cant wait. At this point, I highly recommend you eat here

Lindsey W.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem of Portland !!! The blueberry pancake is amazing !!! Yum !! If you plan to go on a weekend .. GO EARLY !! Perfect, quaint breakfast spot !
google avatar

Jeremy L.

Yelp
The food was a 6.5/10 but the service was terrible. Five staff members standing around, each working independently. Nobody making rounds to make sure coffee was refilled. Once our five plates were ready for our table other staff watched as she struggled and had to make extra trips. The place has lots of potential but it needs a leader and a manager.

Carol W. B.

Yelp
perfect breakfast! They KNOW how to poach an egg and the homemade hash was top drawer! Old (1949) but very clean! Our waiter was Ulysses, a gem!
google avatar

Hilary M.

Yelp
We absolutely loved this cute little spot in the heart of Portland, Maine! After realizing we'd missed breakfast at our hotel, this was the first place we stopped by, and we're so glad we did. My fiancé had the eggs Benedict, and I went for the BLT and some coffee--it was the perfect breakfast to start our day. The interior has such a charming, old-fashioned vibe that we really enjoyed, and the staff was super friendly too. Definitely a great find!
google avatar

Carol K.

Yelp
Delicious food at this cozy diner, definitely a must try anytime you are shopping at Trader Joe's.
google avatar

John E.

Yelp
A great place for breakfast! The food is scrumptious and the service is great! I highly recommend this restaurant for breakfast and brunch
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
Still a great breakfast place. I always eat in the original "car" looks exactly the same when it was at its former location down the street. Great memories here. Food was yummy.
google avatar

Mark F.

Yelp
A no-frills gem in Portland! Make sure to be seared in the actual diner car - terrific retro ambience. Food is typical diner comfort food, which means there's nothing fancy here...but there's a lot of it! Came for breakfast and did not leave disappointed. Real maple syrup is a nice touch. Our server was friendly and attentive even as the morning rush descended. Smiles and good service all around. As an added bonus, parking behind the diner is free!
google avatar

Will V.

Yelp
A very good and busy diner in bustling Portland. Skip the wait for a table in the more basic dining room and ask for a counter seat in the old diner car, you'll get faster service and historic traditional diner ambience. On three visits I've kept it basic: the two eggs breakfast special, scrambled, with home fries, bacon or sausage, and five bread or English muffin toast options. It is hearty and well prepared, served by a friendly and efficient counter server (the same cool/hipster-y man each time I've visited), and a great start to any Maine day. Follow it up with a stroll through the historic Old Port, the majestic Eastern Promenade, or a nearby beach and you've curated a perfect Portland day.

Katrina M.

Yelp
The perfect little breakfast place. It's not only cute inside with its old school diner charm but its simplicity speaks volumes. Their breakfast is amazing and flavorful. The service is super friendly and welcoming. The pancakes are so fluffy and moist. The potatoes are delicious with a lot of flavor. Have had a few items on the menu and didn't disappoint. They also support local farmers and vendors by including their items in the menu. The coffee hits the spot every time. It's a must go to spot. Support local and indulge!
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
Excellent food and service! We would return when we are in Portland again. A fun atmosphere too

Stone P.

Yelp
Is this diner owned by Tom and Celeste? I remember meeting a couple a Several years ago on a flight and they said they owned a diner in Portland ME. We talked hotsauce. Always wanted to visit but never got a chance.
google avatar

Lu-Shien T.

Yelp
Back at my corned beef shrine. When are YOU visiting? Service, beverages, food all on point. Jane has the server dance down moving about the dining room efficiently and projecting a positive friendly vibe.

B E.

Yelp
No eggs Benedict after 2pm. Had to make another choice. Good! The fries are excellent and the service is outstanding!
google avatar

Aakanksha S.

Yelp
Very cute little diner! It's in a little 50's dinner car, and the decor and service were on point! However, the food was lacking to me. I'd recommend sticking to the sweet breakfast foods rather than the savory--those in our group with fruit, pancakes, and french toast seemed quite happy, but the folks with the burritos and eggs benedict were struggling.
google avatar

Niti M.

Yelp
It's your classic diner. We stopped by on our way to the beach. Coffee was ok. Breakfast was tasty. Service was courteous, fast and efficient. They have seating outside. Nice atmosphere. Hard to find parking though but I'd recommend it.
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
Solid place. Old boxcar, with added seating inside a more modern space if you prefer. Staff is incredibly efficient, which is something I appreciate/value. Food prices are reasonable, ~$15 per dish. Was with a party of 4, 2xirish eggs Benedict, 2xBiscuits&Gravy. Everyone enjoyed their meals, I think they could've increased the portion size by ~10% for the price. Waiter was great; service is really what pushed this from a 3 to 4 star.

A. K.

Yelp
Very disappointing. Food wasn't hot, decaf coffee was weak, waitresses kept saying they would come over but then went to other people, and eggs were hard.
google avatar

Carli F.

Yelp
Pretty run of the mill diner. The wait was short for a Saturday morning (~20 min). The blueberry pancakes were good. The eggs looked like the fake dining hall kind. We went to pay the check at the counter and they said they'll come to the table. So the server came and collected the card and paid...at the counter?
