On the Grid : Cliffs

"Since 1936, the queen of gay hardware stores has been a magnet of variety. Household necessities for the kitchen, nuts and bolts, garden and home improvement frame seasonal offerings during any holiday. A section for toys featuring off-brands caters to all ages. The adjacent semi-connected storefront is more soft-home and self improvement — featuring wigs, fabric, shower curtains and a good start for the out crafter in you." - pixelstud

Decent climbing gym, not the cleanest or biggest but clean enough and the route setting was pretty good. I only climbed ropes this time but from what I could see the bouldering seemed limited. I think there are better bouldering gyms nearish, but for rope climbing it’s a good gym.

Top notch climbing gym in SF. Great for lead and belay Bouldering section is a bit cramped when crowded. The weights section is pretty good. Good lockers and sauna

My wallet was stolen, and Mission Cliffs couldn't care less! Their response was consistent with the dismissive attitudes of staff members mentioned by other reviewers. I love the Mission Cliffs community, but the attitude of the staff is really disappointing. On March 25, 2025, between 7:30 and 8:30 PM, my wallet was stolen from my backpack, which was placed on a bench between the bouldering section and the yoga room during my class. I later discovered that the camera in the bouldering section clearly covers the theft area—but the gym manager, Donna Hawkins, initially claimed "camera does not cover the bench". I sent photo evidence, marked the camera and bench in bright red, and emailed gym manager. Later I was told the footage was reviewed and handed over to the police, my request to view the footage in person has been completely ignored. I’ve been trying to work with the gym to get access to this footage, but it’s been nothing but delays and excuses. Here’s a timeline of my requests: March 25th night – Original request. I was told I can't review the footage, I needed to file a police report first. March 26th morning – They Excused with "we’re busy now, but we can review this afternoon." I requested being present for the footage review but got ignored. Later told that the footage was transferred to the police, with no further details. March 27th – I formally requested footage review once again and asked for info about the footage transfer. March 28th -- Police information is provided, incident time was identified, told I can review the coming two days but need to make appointment. March 29th – Follow up within the timeline given to confirm for review time, however I was provided a very short window , which conflicted with my schedule. My request for alternatives went unanswered. The lack of cooperation and constant delays in accessing critical evidence is both frustrating and concerning. The first response to my request to review the footage was a blatant "lie" about the camera not covering the theft area, which was easily disproven. It’s clear that they couldn’t care less about helping you resolve a theft on their premises.

OOf this is tough to write as I'm a big fan of many other Touchstone gyms (and used to attend MC regulary ~10 years ago). Popped by for a yoga class and climb a couple days ago and compared to the East Bay TS gyms, this place is ROUGH. Bathrooms smell like ciggarettes, no feminine products (offered at BIW and PP) and all the studio/class items like mats, blocks, etc are locked up. The studio was an ice box due to two large AC units (with clear lock boxes over the controls) until in the middle of class the units, untouched, switched to blowing hot air. Front desk staff also didn't know there were mats (albeit locked up) at the studio and said I could rent one... rookie move or cheap, I can't tell but ick. The whole gym is dimly lit, the water bottle fill station showed as the filter needed changing and dispensers were out of soap. Tip for Touchstone: invest a little more money into exsiting gyms and take a breather on opening new gyms.

good gym, staff are pretty friendly and helpful. however 7pm is way too early to close on saturday and sunday. at least on saturday it would be really great to stay open till at least 9 or 10. other than that good gym, but just 7pm on saturday especially is just not doing it.

I’ve come here for a few years and mostly really enjoy it, but it’s just too crowded unless you get in at or before 7am or during work hours. People leave their crap all over the floor/walkways and locker room benches, don’t re-rack or return weights, and it’s really stressful to work out in such an environment, let alone climb. I’m switching gyms unfortunately to avoid the hectic crowded vibe.

Great route setting, but incredibly disappointing front desk staff. The person working the desk didn’t seem to know how to rock climb, let alone administer a lead/sport climbing test. From what I could gather, he wasn’t even trained to give a proper lead test—likely because he can’t lead climb himself. For context: I’ve been climbing for 16 years and have worked as a professional route setter. A note to Touchstone: If safety is truly a priority, hire staff who actually climb, care, and are qualified to assess others. This was embarrassing. You might want to slow down the aggressive expansion and ensure at least two competent staff are working the gym floor. The staff member on duty when I visited (April 5th, 3 PM) clearly had no idea what he was doing. Super disappointing. I won’t be returning to this gym anytime soon. If you’re in the area go check out Movement or boulder at Dogpatch, but avoid this gym for sure.

The gym is awesome! They have all necessary equipment for climbing and for working out. There are a steaming room, shower with shampoo etc., they also provide with towels. Gets really full during rush hour, so the time using cardio section is limited (30min) during this hours.
