How to Spend 3 Days Traveling Route 66 in Missouri

"Stepping into Missouri Hick Bar-B-Que felt like walking into a giant log cabin full of friends, and I recommend getting the sample platter so you can try the mouth-watering mac ’n’ cheese, pulled pork, ribs, and more." - Matthew Kepnes

Stopped by to try some Missouri BBQ! First of all, the semi parking is absolute trash, we got stuck! Thank Jesus for a good samaritan who helped us, but semis, please do not park in that gravel lot. Owner needs to fix this by leveling it out ASAP. Back to the food, we got the 2 meat platter (brisket and ribs) with baked sweet potato and mac and cheese. Overall very mid, everything needs salt. The meat was smokey and good, very monotone flavored mac and cheese, where is the salt on the sweet potato? even the butter they gave was unsalted. BBQ sauces were good, sweet and spicy was not spicy however. Customer service was excellent, super nice esp Claire! I do recommend for some decent BBQ food if you’re on I-44, us personally we would not be back!

Google
Food was perfect! We had the pulled pork nachos, smoked chicken and brisket. Portions were enough for two meals! Meats were tender and juicy not dry. The BBQ sauces are AMAZING. Our favorite is the Sweet and Smoky. Must try if you like BBQ. The decor is unique the use of old sewing machine parts...just wow! Very good business y'all should be proud ❤️

Google
I really enjoyed this place. The pulled pork sandwich and brisket were both very tasty. I tried all of the sauces on the table. The sweet and smoky and honey were my personal favorites. The sweet and spicy was not very spicy, but was also good.

Elliot Schumacher

Google
I had the most tender, perfectly cooked, and delicious pulled pork sandwich. It's the best BBQ I've had in years. Their mac n cheese is also phenomenal. Plus, there's 5 types of in-house BBQ sauces Our server was very nice and checked on us regularly, but didn't hover. Our table and the restrooms were very clean. Finally, they have extremely fair prices. My friend and I ate like kings for under $40!

Google
This place is homey and comfortable. The decor is country and appealing. The food was great but could use more beef.

Google
Our larger group had a great lunch. The waitress was attentive. The meal was very good. The special was fried chicken. It was great. I was only surprised by the wait to fry it. I assumed they would have it mass fried. Still, it was worth the wait. I highly recommend this establishment. It's way more than a tourist location. It's legit!

Google
O my god this place is a gem. I eat BBQ all over the US especially in TX this place hands down was the best I have had so far. I recommend the St Louis Ribs. Lots of different home made Sauses my favorite is the sweet and Smoky.

Floyd Anderson

Google
This is a rustic restaurant with a good vibe snd lots of nice employees. I ordered the pulled pork. I found it dry and without much flavor. Of course you can drown it in bbq sauce. The gravy on the mashed potatoes had a consistency and flavor of something out of a jar. The beans were quite good.

Yelp
The food was delicious, I found that the coleslaw was one of the best . Being a Texas boy , I'm not a fan of using sauce on my bbq but if I had to it means the actual meat had no flavor. Missouri hicks bbq can put down some good good. No sauce needed . But if I had to . Id say Smokey would be my pick . The service is great waitress are very in tune to the customers and very pretty I might add. Katlyn was my waitress. She was quick with my food. Took the time to make my night here enjoyable. The place has country vibe . It's a bbq place got to love it .. had to wait awhile but in the end it was worth the wait. Full happy and ready to hit the road. Till my next adventure.

Yelp
Every time we are headed out west we make a stop at Missouri Hick BBQ. Located on RT 66 it is steeped in history and Goodness. BBQ is juicy and tender. One can say you have died and gone to heaven after having a plate of their Barbeque. Tasty and delicious. Portion sizes are large so bring your appetite. Wait staff are warm and inviting.... waits can be long but well worth it

Nathan H.

Yelp
Food was mediocre at best. I got the two meat combo; St Louis Ribs and Brisket with Cole slaw and Mac n cheese as sides. Ribs were tender but lacked smoked flavor or seasoning. Brisket came chopped up and was dry even though I asked for it moist. If you're decent at smoking meats you'll have a better product a home. Coleslaw was plain but could use some kind of seasoning (maybe put some celery salt and pepper in there?) Mac n cheese good but kinda luke warm when served. Server was friendly and attentive. Atmosphere felt more like a cabin in the woods than a BBQ joint. Place was clean.

Yelp
Very good Barbecue! Great decorations! Friendly service! Loved the sweet and spicy sauce with my pulled pork! Green beans were yummy!

Yelp
Really good bbq spot in n a real life small Missouri town. Stop in Cuba MO for a quick bit or full on dinner. An old southern setting with all wood and varnish tables warm and inviting. Even the restroom is an old style outhouse feel. Tables set up with a choice of five different style bbq sauces run the gamut from sweet mild to spicy sweet heat. Few frills and all thrills in the traditional sense, the menu is straightforward from pulled pork to brisket. Generous size portion's with chips, pickle and a side choice. I did an Ory's Special 50/50 brisket/pulled pork Sammy and loaded it with left bbq sauce excellent choice. My buddy knocked off s brisket dinner. The best part of the meal was the service as the two girls working on this Monday afternoon were a class act. Both super friendly warm and inviting to a coupla fish outta water city boys. Nothing makes a good meal great like great hospitality.

Yelp
Food was terrible with no seasoning. Ordered the sampler tray with corn on the cob and the "catfish platter." The fish was 100 percent not catfish, the coleslaw was hot, the barbecue was tough with zero flavor, the portions on the sampler tray were tiny, the corn was soft as hell, and our hush puppies were doughy and raw. Manager came and spoke with us after we had barely touched the food and tried to offer us something else but we politely declined. They ended up only taking $7 dollars off our bill. After barely touching the food and then taking it away. How do they have awards?? I have no clue. RUN!

Yelp
The food was fine. No where near "the best BBQ" as the Sirius-XM dj claims. Everything not food was very good: cleanliness, staff, portions, price, etc. The meat is smoked with cherry wood. That means it has a very mild smoke flavor. No where near as strong as hickory or oak, which is my preference. I had a sampler platter with brisket, ribs, and jalepeno cheddar sausage. My wife had a pulled pork sandwich. I've smoked brisket and ribs in the last week, and I humbly submit mine were 5x better. I'll never come back because it's off the beaten path, and not my style of bbq. But to be clear...it was NOT a bad experience.

Yelp
Heading back from St. Louis and my boss suggested stopping in here. I got the half half sandwich with German patio salad. The sandwich was really good with plenty of meat. The German portal salad was exceptionally delicious as well. Most places serve "German potato salad" cold which isn't correct. So when it came out hot I was impressed. The spicy bbq sauce had a nice kick but not overly hot. The smoker sauce was a little heavy on the smoke for me but combined it and the spice gave a nice combo. Staff was friendly and the place was clean. Lot of locals in bc they all knew the staff by name. If in the area I would stop again.

Denise W.

Yelp
We stopped here at lunch. We got ribs, pulled pork and brisket. The pulled pork was ok. The brisket was very dry and not edible without sauce. The ribs were not fall off the bone but were tender and had a good flavor. There were multiple sauces on the table. I tried them all except for the spicy one and they all tasted the same. I would not eat here again. I do Not recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
I knew we were in trouble by the time we passed the 4th billboard for this place. Alas, we were hungry and figured might as well. Is this a tourist trap or a hidden gem? Well a hidden gem doesnt have billboards every 500 ft... Food: Went with the sampler and I could not pick one item on the plate that would want to eat again. Even the fries were soggy and cold. Seems they just dont care, as they must feel that the tourists won't be back anyway. Service: Almost non existent, even though we visited late in the afternoon and most tables were empty.

Yelp
Atmosphere and service were really great. It's a big space decorated with old gas pumps and signs, cow hides and a huge wood burning fireplace. The wait staff was kind and attentive. Unfortunately the bbq was mediocre. The pulled pork and brisket were dry, The ribs were good. The mustard potato salad and cole slaw were good, the German potato salad and pickled cucumbers and onions were mediocre. Something to note is that the only alcoholic beverage they serve is beer. One of my favorite BBQ sides is a cup of greens, and that is not on the menu.... Oh and no cornbread.
google avatar

Jeff P.

Yelp
Right off Route66 this out of the way bbq restaurant was quaint and down home. The wait staff were nice and offered good suggestions. The food was served hot and steamy. The Mac and cheese was nothing to write home about, edible yet lacking any originality or flavor, the pulled chicken was just ok nothing jumped out and said wow, finally the brisket was just ok. Overall a cool place and a decent lunch but lacks the wow factor.
google avatar

Don R.

Yelp
Low 3/5. I want to like this place more but the brisket is chopped and the turkey is sliced deli thin and is always dry. My ribs were inedible this time though last visit I liked them. My server was awesome and I'm sure if you hit this place at just the right time it can be pretty good for what it is, but there's no way this is award winning bbq as per the billboards.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in on our way back from St Louis. I know there is a lot of hype about this place but my back ground as a former competitive bbq'er had me saying "meh!" Service was actually great but the food was mediocre in my option.

Patrick N.

Yelp
Food was average backs of ribs were not peeled. One bottle of bar b que sauce had turned acidic. May be best in Missouri, but not in Oklahoma lots of signs on the highway none in town. Was good just not great

Jeffrey H.

Yelp
Have only been once. The food was good as well as the service and prices. Will be going back. Hopefully soon.

Yelp
Great BBQ in Cuba, MO. Huge amounts. We had the 4 oz Pulled pork and 7oz Brisket. Both were moist with great flavor. We liked the smoke sauce the best but they offer 6 or more other sauces to choose from. They offer vinegar based and mayo based slaw. Tried the mayo based slaw, just above average. Also had the German potato salad. Big thumbs up on the taste and served warm. $34 prior to tip. The service was fast and the team was super nice. The inside of the place takes you to a make believe barn or stable. Cool effect. Lots of room. Was too full to try the Blackberry Cobbler. Took some for the road. It was MMMM! Worth stopping by and trying. Will be back for sure!!!

Yelp
Stopped in today for lunch. We were created warmly and our server walked us through the menu. Large portions, lots of variety. The green beans and salad was meh, but the smoked meats were yummy. Lots of sauce choices. Few vegetarian options.

Yelp
Fun little spot on Route 66 that has connections to I-44 at both ends about 3-4 miles apart. It's a bit off the interstate but it won't take you out of the way at all. Every meat is smoked and the sides were great. The kids loved their options as well. The decor inside and out is everything you'd hope for in a roadside restaurant on Route 66. The "His'n" bathroom is an indoor outhouse. The kids were amazed to see and use that. Quick service so you can eat healthier than fast food and still be back on the road quickly.

Yelp
Ordered takeout for dinner. Had an Ozark salad with honey mustard and a pulled chicken sandwich. Both were delicious. Salad was too big to finish so perhaps I should have just had the 1/2 salad. Lots of people coming in and out for takeout. I can definitely understand why. Staff was very friendly
google avatar

Taylor R.

Yelp
By far an amazing bbq spot. All types of sauces and meals to choose from. Big filling portions. Service was fabulous. Great cute decor. Great to take out of town eta visiting. Only 15 mins from our Airbnb.

Yelp
The food, service, and ambiance were all great. A rustic decor inside and out, definitely takes you back to a different time. Food was delicious. We were traveling with 3 kids under 7, we ordered to sample plates and a little extra. Everyone was full and happy, the food was delicious!

Yelp
Hard to go wrong when you have a water wheel out front! Kid friendly -- kids under 3 eat free -- and the food is tasty and plentiful. Caitlyn was a delight!

Yelp
Y'all need to bookmark and stop here when passing through! A tad bit off the main highway, but well worth the diversion! If you are local, you likely have already been here a time or three. You can't help but see this place! Just look for the huge hog on the roof! As we pulled into the parking lot and parkied in front of the water wheel of the mill pond, there was a bull frog that had to be massive! It was louder than my subwoofer! I'll be honest, I did keep my distance from that pond as it sounded like a monster. The inside décor is what you would want in a BBQ Joint. Lots of wood paneling, lots of cool items hanging on the walls/ceilings and lots of wonderful smells of BBQ in the air! Dennis Meiser, a master BBQer and woodworker, is the creator. He made the tables and chairs plus the cedar stairs leading up to the balcony. All of their meats are seasoned with a special rub and then smoked overnight in cherry for 12 hours. We were shown to a table with all kinds BBQ sauces. As I looked around, I saw our fellow patrons eating and enjoying many items from the menu. I ordered brisket and pork ribs with a side salad and German potato salad. In no time, it was in front of me. The flavor and aroma was very nice. (Cherry smoke can be a little strong/different to some. I like it mixed with pecan and white oak, but that is my weird tastes.) The salad was quite good and not just lettuce. The German potato salad was pretty good as well, with a great tart flavor! The price was reasonable and the service was quite good! I should add, the bull frog seemed louder as we left so I got in the Jeep a little faster than normal.

Yelp
Just went here yesterday Jan 18. Absolutely the best BBQ ever ! I had this huge Baked potato OMG ! Was piled with baked beans, beef, lots of cheeses and green onion. It was amazing . The smoked chicken excellent choice along with their Brisket.... Such a nice friendly, very comfortable seating. TV along with a really beautiful fire place. Just a piece of Cuba Missouri you have to check it out ! The wait staff out front 2 of the most nicest humans ever. They both seemed to really enjoy their job.. and they were excellent at the service from the moment u walk in. Very clean place such a Gold Mine here in little Cuba !!! Do yourself a favor go check them out !

Yelp
Now I know MO Hicks is known for their amazing smoked meats. Not so long ago I too was going GAGA over their ribs! I've stopped eating meat for the most part, so I wasn't sure how my next MO Hicks moment would be. Well they know what's up with Catfish! Dayummmmmm. Their Friday Fish Fry only $1 more than their basket and it's all the fish you can eat. But my first serving were two filets as big as my face and that was all she wrote. We love their little side salads (not included) and coleslaw (included) too. Oh and their hush puppies are delicious y'all. Soooo good. I still get down with their sauce. When I lived in NV my wife and I would order a case at a time. It's nice to be 7 miles down the road now and be able to get sauced any time I want!!
google avatar

Kathy F.

Yelp
the outside decor makes you want to come in and see what they have to offer .... so many things to take in with the decor a step back in time which is perfect since it's located on Route 66. The appetizer selection is small but what they have outstanding the Muleshoe is a meal in itself... good bbq doesn't need a sauce but they offer 5 different ones to from

Yelp
Found out about this place while searching the best BBQ joint in St Louis and there were some recommended joints outside of St. Louis. I had to go up to Rolla for some errands, decided to continue up my journey. Got there right after they opened... was told to sit anywhere, so I opted for the back of the room. I got the menu and after a while, opted to do with two dishes so I could try all meats they had. Sampler Platter - ribs pulled pork and brisket Two Meat Platter - sausage and turkey I got slaw and green beans for both. If you do visit, I would recommend you order the rib and pulled pork. The rib was excellent, moist, seasoned well and smoked to perfection. The pulled pork was moist, juicy and seasoned perfectly. Turkey was ok, but would skip it. Sausage was too salty, skip it. Brisket - definitely skip it. I had hopes, but was disappointed. The brisket was not smoked, more like cooked in a slow cooker, it could also use some more seasoning. If you come for BBQ, come here for ribs and pulled pork - enjoyed the two dishes!

Yelp
Summary: Enjoyed a very good smoked chicken meal at a terrific value. MoHick boasts it has the finest smoked bar-b-q in the Ozarks. There are places in Branson, Springfield and across southern Missouri that might take rightly take exception to the boast. However, my chicken sandwich was very good. With a choice of 4 or 7 ounces I chose the smaller. It came with a side dish (slaw), pickle wedge, Texas toast, house-made potato chips, and a peperoncino. A filling plate for less than a Whopper meal. And tastier. The chicken was smoky moist on arrival but dried quickly and needed sauce as I continued. With five table sauces that wasn't a problem. All were light variations on MoHick's Original sweet Q sauce. Slaw options were creamy or vinegar. The vinegar sparkled with sweetness and a tinge of acid. The portion size was generous. Service was attentive even with the server seemingly managing a dozen tables.

Yelp
Justice was our waitress today and she gave us excellent service. I can't remember the last time I had sweet tea but it was pretty dang good. I haven't been to this restaurant for at least four years and it was as good as I remembered. Cherry smoked brisket, ribs and pulled pork, the baked beans were to die for. I WOULD recommend and I would go back. Justice was our waitress today and she gave us excellent service. I can't remember the last time I had sweet tea but it was pretty dang good. Yelp
Very helpful staff, excellent smells while we waited for carry out. All of our selections were great just wish we had ordered more

Yelp
Food was cold and lacked seasoning. Barbecue sauce was too sweet. Pulled pork was cold and dry. Ribs had no dry rub.

Yelp
I hate to leave a negative review for somewhere with such delicious food. But unfortunately, our experience isn't based on the food in this case. We visited Mo Hick around 7:00ish on 3/7/24, had a wonderful dinner. Our food was great, our waitress was friendly and helpful. After dinner we were trying to get out of their hair so they could get cleaned up and get ready for closing. On our way out, we noticed that the exterior lights that were on when we came in, were now turned off, though they were still open and still had other customers inside. We even commented how dark it was. As we are walking out the front entrance, not even 15 feet from the front door, my mother trips over a parking curb, which was not painted yellow, no reflective strip, nothing. My 65 year old mother fell to the ground to the wet pavement in pain. My sister immediately went inside for ice, the staff in front was slow to get it, but did eventually realize what was going on, and they grabbed the ice and came outside to check. The girls who came out were very friendly, trying to joke after seeing my mother was responsive. They quickly retreated back inside though. Did not offer much service other than the ice. My mother tripped over a curb that was not properly painted, in the dark. She broke her ankle, and bruised herself up pretty bad. The next day, I emailed MO Hick to let them know what had happened. Not to ask for anything, except for them to consider keeping their lights on until they close, because apparently, they knowingly turn them off close to closing time, to prevent others from coming inside, and to recommend painting their curbs safety yellow. This could have happened to someone much older and much more fragile. Instead, I got no response. And when my mother called and asked to speak to the manager, she was only met with complete disrespect and hatefulness. This is when they told her they purposely turn the lights off. And that they would be responding to my email. It is now 2 weeks later and we have not heard anything. Which is what is leading to my review. My family will not dine somewhere that does not care about their customers or about their safety & wellbeing. They lost an entire family of customers.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! We were driving from Branson to St. Louis and were starting to look for a place for lunch. My son was craving bbq and we saw a billboard for Mo Hick BBQ, so I pulled it up on Yelp and we followed the directions to find the place. We missed a turn and went a little out of the way before we figured it out, but we eventually made it. The building has a cool waterwheel outside and vintage, but comfortable decor. The only complaint I have was that there was a man waiting for a table outside the restroom. I went in and closed the door and realized that there was a huge gap in the door and he looked right in at me. I ended up switching off the light to use the toilet so he couldn't see me. We were told there would be a 20-30 minute wait, but we only ended up waiting about 10 minutes. Our server was very attentive and kept our drinks refilled and checked on us often. I ordered the broasted white meat chicken with mac and cheese and baked beans. It was soooo good! There were several different bottles of bbq sauce on the table and I tried them on my chicken. My favorite was the original. My husband ordered the pulled chicken, my daughter had the pulled pork sandwich, and my son had the brisket. We were all blown away by how much we loved our food. We're from California and won't be passing by again anytime soon, but we will make the effort to go back next time we visit Missouri!

Jordan P.

Yelp
Loved the sampler platter, which was VERY generous portion. Was steered to it by the server. Really nicely Smokey. Sat at "picnic tables" in roadhouse like atmosphere. Lots of sauce choices. A delicious break from driving.

Darren K.

Yelp
Public service announcement - if you've ever had good barbecue, stay away from this place. Very bad food. I got the ribs and had to send them back and I hate sending food back. I got the brisket instead. Better, but not good. Tried a bite of the turkey- not good. baked beans, and potato salad average at best, which made them easily the best part of the meal. Two thumbs down.
google avatar

Joe L.

Yelp
I opted for the Sampler Platter, this is the way to go if you want a good selection of meats. Overall the ribs were fall off the bone tender and great flavor, the pulled pork was moist but did need some sauce to give it some flavor, the brisket was OK but more like chopped beef versus brisket and a bit overdone. The sides I had of cole slaw and cucumber & onions were delicious and had great flavor. Service was OK and overall the food was good.
google avatar

Zack G.

Yelp
Classic BBQ in with a real country atmosphere. I came with my friend. I got the ribs and she got both the pulled pork and brisket. Both came with 2 sids. I was not impressed with the ribs, but my friend liked her biscuit. 6

Yelp
A BBQ joint on rte. 66? Still open at 7 PM on a Sunday night? You bet I'm going to stop--this being the 368th 'cue stop on a journey across 35 states. $15.85 + tip purchased a pulled pork plate with sides of German potato salad and mac 'n cheese, with a refillable soft drink (Pepsi products). The pork had good smoke and flavor, and paired well with the original sauce that was on the table. Alas, the mac 'n cheese was dry in the extreme, and the German potato salad would have been better if served hot. So. the pork is a safe bet, but next time I'll try some of the other sides.

Brad O.

Yelp
Food is overpriced, no flavor & service is slow.. Not a bad looking place at first however not worth the experience at all.. don't recommend eating here
google avatar

Yelp
MO Hicks BBQ sits along Rt 66 in Cuba, MO. They always have good service and good food. I have been there many times with my motorcycle club, and they never disappoint!
google avatar

Joey H.

Yelp
I stopped by on a weeknight so it wasn't terribly busy but it wasn't empty either. Service was good and food came out pretty fast. Ordered a burnt ends sandwich with baked beans. Probably the best BBQ you can find in Missouri 5 mins from the interstate in any town not called Kansas City. They have a nice selection of sauces if you dine in, so you can pick what fits your taste. If you are craving BBQ and are passing through, this place will get the job done for you.
google avatar

Sam H.

Yelp
We've been here before and the bbq is pretty good but I was in the mood for a baked potato for one of my vegetarian days The menu online stated 10.99 for the baked potato but when I got there it was 12.99 and no price change for no meat. So I left the bacon and meat off, still 12.99. One might think that leaving all that off, they might put more of the onions and cheese etc on but that was not the case. The beans were so sickeningly sweet I couldn't eat them. Giving 3 stars because the do good bbq but they should have a vegetarian option with a lower price.

Yelp
Love dining here and also love the shirts one can purchase here. Love the desserts here too-especially the fruit cobblers(with ice cream)! Good array of barbecue sauces available(important to me). I also like that German Potato Salad and Sauerkraut are among the sides one can choose from. The sausages are decent. My favorite meat is the sliced turkey. The pulled pork is not shredded which I prefer. However each time I have been here the service has been great. Definitely a great place for tourists and family and friends. On historic Route 66!
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, good service and great food! Loved eating on the top screened in area while enjoying our food.

Thom S.

Yelp
Outstanding cherry smoked BBQ. If you can't decide, go with the sampler platter. The portions are huge and don't forget the great sides. You have 6 BBQ sauces to sample. Great service! A Route 66 tradition!

Layne J.

Yelp
These people are some real Dumb A--es. They have billboards on the highway A few miles before the exit claiming to have room for semi truck parking. Today I was bobtailing, didn't have a trailer with me. Well He'll you can't even get a bobtail unit in this very small lot let alone a full semi truck! I was very upset because wanted to try some good BBQ. Well I can't, instead have to go to the crappy TA down the road. I guess it's just as well they call themselves Hick since that is what they are! Hey Hick, take down those billboards because that's false advertising.
google avatar

Jason V.

Yelp
I had a lot of high hopes for this place as this is advertised well on the road going west into Cuba, as well as Route 66 publications. But I found this to be very typical of most of the BBQ places I've eaten at. Not to say it was bad, just not special in any way or nothing stood out. I found the portions to the sides to be small, but either way I was still full. The mac and cheese and fries were okay. Food came out quick as the restaurant wasn't that busy during the afternoon.

Erica W.

Yelp
Awesome little spot along 66! I'm not sure where people get the idea of a dry brisket, because mine was perfection. I got the sampler with ribs, brisket, and ribs. They. Were. AMAZING. The German potato salad was delicious, the slaw was decent (but my tastebuds were underwhelmed after the potato salad, lol). My husband had the ribs and the sausage and thought it was delicious as well. His green beans were good, but the fries were fantastic. We LOVED the Smokey sauce (even bought two bottles to take home). Topped it off with apple cobbler that all but melted in our mouths. Definitely a MUST STOP!!!!
