At Mister D on 47 Tennyson Street, Napier South, you’re greeted by a modern, inviting, bright space, contemporary, and utterly unpretentious. Dog owners you’ll want to grab a seat in the outdoor courtyard, where the sun shines down and dogs are more than welcome. It’s a delightful touch that adds a layer of warmth to the experience. We visited for brunch and had the smashed avocado on toasted sourdough, adorned with Hohepa feta and hazelnut dukkah. The bacon butty, with its toasted brioche and “Holly” middle bacon, drizzled in barbecue sauce. And don’t skip the smoked fish cake with poached egg and brown butter hollandaise; it’s a dish that is a favorite of many diners 👌....dishes are of the highest quality, so you will not be disappointed. Pair it all with a spicy, moreish Bloody Mary and top-notch coffee, and you’ve got a 5 Star experience that’s hard to beat.

Plus some great tips on other places for the rest of our journey (Poppy says Hi 😉) The food was exceptional, and wines to amaze (always trust the local insider knowledge, not the price tag)

Really nice vibes all round. Really good water refilling service. About the cheesy egg - it was a little too watery at the bottom, and was pretty bland. Not a good cure for hangovers On the hand, the fish cake was extremely delicious, the hollandaise was scrumptious. Egg is perfect. A must for when you are in town

After humming and harring where to have brunch I settled with Mister D. I ordered the smashed avocado with feta etc...and with some extras, Bacon and Tomato. And had a doughnut with custard and coffee. Wow what amazing service and food! The meal and extras do add up, but so worth it. Best brunch and service I've ever had. Wish you were in Palmy nth.

The food was really delicious, especially the bread—it was amazing! I will definitely come back. It would be even better if the service could be improved a bit

Excellently prepared and conceived dishes make this unassuming restaurant one of Napier’s best. Great care had been taken to organise the setting, including 2 guitars in the wall which deserved to be played. We had the Coromandel Oysters; Duck Risotto, nicely cooked duck slices presented on a mound of Risotto rice, cooked just right; lamb rack (not the bones, just the meat), house salad, really nice potato gratin, and a delicious vanilla custard dessert that defies description, a bit like a dismantled millefuille! Wines were well matched by the, rather diffident, waiter. We’d booked a table, which turned out to be unnecessary as there were very few customers - this being a Wednesday night. This detracted from the atmosphere, but meant that we could talk quietly! We would definitely return!

We had dinner at Mr D and everything looked the part. Really enjoyed the beetroot entree which was the star of the evening. Shared a few other entrees and mains, everything looked visually appealing. The flavour profile wasn’t quite up to expected standards but with a few slight tweaks it could be elevated. But overall, it was a great experience.

My wife and I visited on a recent trip to Napier - our second visit to Mr D's. The experience was just as good as we remembered. We shared a starter of Iberico ham and delicious spiced apricots. Mains were duck risotto (my wife says this is the best risotto she's ever eaten) and a seasonal turkey saltimbocca that was just right for Christmas with prosciutto and cherries. The Broccolini side dish almost stole the show sitting on a cloud of garlic scented puree and hazelnuts. Just delicious. The food is great and the team make sure the experience is memorable too. Our young waiter was busy charming every table he went to and his personality made the meal memorable. The rest of the staff backed up and worked as a whole team to look after us. Food great, experience 5 star.

We landed in Napier from Auckland to visit some friends and stopped here for lunch on the way. The food was innovative, fresh ingredients and perfectly prepared. The atmosphere was relaxed and the staff was professional. I would definitely go again.

My favorite spot to eat in Napier. Super cute fresh vibes, very open space with a back patio eating area. Their presentation is superb and menu unique. I think the meal was overall a little under seasoned but I'm noticing this to be a trend in all of NZ so maybe my taste buds are just spoiled by America. I started with a juice, the Energizer which was in an adorable medicine bottle packed with fresh ginger and soaked chia seeds so very fun texture. I got the cheesy eggs and confit mushrooms and added plenty of hot sauce, salt and pepper to enjoy. Prices were on the higher end but fair for the quality of food. Also stopped by for lunch the next day. The bone marrow ravioli was superb, though the pasta dough was too thick and the marrow wasn't he star, the broth was. Also enjoyed the octopus which was perfectly prepared, but again could've used more zing in the citrus. Greek salad was ok, cucumbers were chopped very unevenly though. They say they have wifi, but it doesn't work (both days), just a heads up

Still as good as ever! Today we just stopped for a coffee, donut and a read of the newspaper.

This place was good, trendy, though maybe wasn't as fancy as they made themselves out to be. Otherwise we were all extremely happy with our dinners. We had the roasted fish (very tasty), fish in a bag, veal, and beetroot risotto. The inject-your-own donuts is worth getting for the novelty.

Creative menu, fresh and tasty food and Strong coffee! The flat white was awesome, a great start to my morning, had some toast with avocado and feta on it as well as an African spice Dukkah. My husband got the Bali fruit and yogurt bowl which was tasty and fresh. Prompt service in a nice atmosphere.

Went in for a late breakfast...was warmly greeted and felt at home.Nice airy decor...lovely friendly staff..wish I didn't have to run away from Napier so quick as I would loved to go in again. Ordered a coffee and some eggs...good...no complaints ...

This is a favourite . When in Hawkes Bay I ate here 3 times in 2 days . Such thoughtful design. Such good healthy food. Breakfast here will get your day started the right way.

actually really impressed with these guys in cute little Napier. The interior is modern, cosy, and pleasant for the eyes haha. The staff and service was perfect, so friendly and always joking with us which made the experience more friendly and fun. I ordered the cheesy baked eggs and feijoa juice. He ordered the D-deli breakfast and a long black. and last but not least a donut to finish off. I love me some baked eggs. Usually (at other baked eggs eateries) i get the chorizo, spinach, and tomato baked eggs but this time was something different.. A cheesy white sauce with spinach and bake eggs and gosh it was delicious! the bread was perfect to mop up all the runny egg yolk and creamy cheesy sauce...mmmm so good. That feijoa juice was so refreshing! it was like eating fresh feijoas but in juice form. He ordered the d-deli breakfast thinking it was like the big breakfast (we totally forgot about the DELI word haha) but it was all cured meats and pickles etc. it was still nice but odd to eat that for breakfast? Long black was very good according to him. That donut though. Freshly made to order and with you choice of three flavours... chocolate, custard or jam (jelly) served in an injection. It was so cute and fun and made the experience better. There was a tad TOOO much sugar tossed onto the donut but that was the only downside as i could easily brush it off. Definitely stop by here for breakfast if you're in Napier!!! indoor and outdoor seating, both which are very comfortable and cosy. Definitely coming back here if i have the chance!!!

Exceptional food and service. The cheese soufflé is amazing when it's available (you might have to ask if they have it). The duck risotto is perfect as well.

One of our better dinners in New Zealand! We ordered a lot and enjoyed everything. The clams were so fresh and tasty. I don't remember the appetizer or my husband's dinner, but I do remember ordering and inhaling the amazing donut dessert. WOW. The chocolate injector into the warm cinnamon sugar donut was fun and delicious. Also, the interior of this place is beautiful. The high ceiling with loads of glass really makes it feel like you're in the middle of a huge city, but the service was friendly and fast. Loved our experience -- especially after spending some time before at Monica Loves.

Yum!!! I really love Mister D. Modern,stylish and cool. Slightly more expensive than a standard cafe but the food is really good and a cut above some of the other cafes I've visited in Napier.... I like the way you can see the chefs working in the kitchen. Winner.

Came for a lunch with a friend and had the delicious kingfish sashimi salad. The flavours were awesome with a kick of wasabi spice. Coffee also fabulous. Great decor in a nice large space. Will be back for sure!

Unfortunately their reputation seem to have gotten to their heads. Closed us the door in the face, 10 minutes before their actual (already very early - 4pm) closing time. Then stood inside looking at us and acted like they couldn't do anything about it. *NOT RECOMMENDED* to support. Go half a block down to the little cart called Donut Robot. Great service & delicious donuts!

We stopped by to have breakfast early in the morning. Napier is a city that prides itself for having an Art Deco style of buildings similar to 1930s. We were absolutely delighted that within a short flash back to history we found a delightful and friendly restaurant , excellent service and food for breakfast. I would recommend this place to any traveler passing through specially after a long and tiring hiking trip like ours

Amazing restaurant- a must! Mister D and his staff are outstanding!! Loved the corned beef hash cake, add a poached egg. Donuts were also delish!

Great restaurant in Napier. Seasonal menu includes some amazing fish. Look out for the figs and Gorgonzola this autumn. But leave room for dessert: the doughnuts and grown up syringe fillings are delicious!

Eight of us dropped in for lunch while playing tourist in this pretty art-deco town. Service was good, as was the food. While not inexpensive, I can recommend it.

We were referred to Mister D's by someone at a winery and we couldn't have been happier. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. The restaurant ambiance was very comfortable.

Have been twice now and both times thoroughly enjoyed it! Definitely on the must-visit list when we're in Napier

I have eaten here on several occasions, and its always a treat. You absolutely can't go past the bone marrow ravioli - it's incredible. Amazing flavours but it is on the small side. Luckily the mains aren't super expensive so its worthwhile ordering an entree too. If available I recommend the doughnuts as a delicious novelty item - served with a syringe with your choice of filling which you inject in the doughnut. Fun and yum! The service is excellent and the ambience is good. The open kitchen lets you see the chefs hard at work.

Always a mystery when travelling to know a good place to eat. Spotted Mister D on an art deco walk. They were able to seat us for early dinner as a walk in on a busy weekend. The staff were attentive even though it was a busy evening. We ordered the market fish dish which was grouper that evening and the Wakanui roast beef salad. The flavours and presentation of both dishes were excellent. We decided to share the summer berries and strawberry sorbet desert which was excellent with the right amount of sweetness and a hint of sharpness. I would recommend this restaurant and when in Napier again will look forward to another culinary encounter.

Nothing but amazing. Such great food with local ingredients. So fresh and light for a breakfast before we got back on the road. The service was very great, their cheesy eggs were absolutely amazing, and the grapefruit juice was fresh squeezed right there.

Had lunch today. Really, really nice. Local fish ( groper) in a bag with Thai spice and the daily preparation of the same fish. Both were outstanding! The waitress/owner was very engaged and sincerely helpful to explain everything on the menu and to provide the perfect wine pairing. Excellent!

Cheesy eggs were perfectly done, get a side of black pudding and breakfast is made. Lovely baked goods, good coffee and wonderful atmosphere. 4.5 of I could have given them the extra half star.

Excellent service and amazing food. The power went out while we were eating, but the staff just took it in their stride. We even went back the next day!

Love the coffee here. The food sometimes takes a while to arrive, but it is always good and beautifully presented. We like to come for coffee and doughnuts with the homemade jam injections.

We were enthused by all of the excellent reviews on this restaurant by others so we went there expecting a great experience and meal. We found the service to be poor and the prices to be higher than other restaurants nearby. We decided to dine a little early at 5:45 PM. As we entered we were properly greeted and seated. Then we WAITED while staff were milling around doing nothing. We wondered if we were dressed improperly but after looking around found that others were dressed as we were. The waiter finally came to our table, we orderd and the food came in a reasonable time. The food seemed to be priced much higher than another restaurant where we had eaten the night before. Yes the place had a high ceiling and seemed to be a nice place. But our experience was of a business and employees that were snobbish and cared little about their guests.
