"They say spring is a time of optimism, and Mike Mitchell would agree. The rabid Cleveland Guardians fan also loves to wax poetic about his namesake ice cream, lauded as one of Ohio’s finest. Mitchell and his brother, Pete, founded Mitchell’s Homemade Ice Cream a quarter century ago and in 2014 transformed a weatherbeaten theater in Ohio City into a sparkling production and retail facility. It’s one of nine Mitchell’s locations sprinkled around northeast Ohio. The Ohio State University philosophy major brings an enlightened approach to the craft. “There’s a certain Platonic ideal for ice cream flavors, a taste image that you carry with you,” Mitchell says. “I’ve spent my adult life working on these flavors, and they’re all where I want them to be.”" - Wendy Pramik

Google
Love Mitchell's, grew up having it close by and happy to finally visit my new local place. Love the converted theater look, and Seasonal flavors. One of the best places to go for a nice creamy icecream. Had the seasonal Peppermint stick sundae, and my partner had two other seasonal flavors. Air quality was below 1000 but went above shortly before we left.

Google
A must-visit gem in Cleveland! Mitchell's Ice Cream (Ohio City Kitchen & Shop) is a delightful experience for ice cream lovers. We tried the Toasted Pistachio and Chocolate Chunk flavors, and both were absolutely amazing – rich, creamy, and bursting with flavor. What truly sets this place apart is the open kitchen concept. You can head upstairs and watch the team craft their incredible flavors, which adds a unique, behind-the-scenes touch to the visit. The atmosphere is inviting, and the staff is super friendly. Whether you're a local or just visiting Cleveland, Mitchell's is a spot you don’t want to miss. Highly recommended!

Google
The ice cream here is some of the best I’ve had great flavors, friendly staff. I ordered the mixed berry cobbler and banana cream pie flavor. I also tried the Swiss white chocolate and amaretto cookie, which were also good choices.

Google
The best ice cream. There is nothing not to love, but please make sure to try Wildberry Crumble (always) and Vegan Buckeye if on the seasonal menu. Climb the stairs for the best view of the kitchen and enjoy your ice cream on the balcony.

Google
My favorite ice-cream place i take my grown kids and my grands there every couple of weeks. Its the factory so u can actually see how the ice-cream is made and ask to tyy any flavor they have. They are open year round.

Tanner Cassidy

Google
Amazing ice cream. This is a great spot for kids, since they have a large open window to view staff actively making ice cream right behind where you order. Prices are pretty good, and there's plenty of seating. A great dessert spot.

Google
It was a very busy day and had a line up. The place is spotless clean and the ice cream was phenomenal. The wild berry flavor was one of the best I've ever had. The location is also very cool. They also have a water tap which is great cause I'm always thirsty after Ice cream.

Google
Wow you can see how the make the ice cream, fresh and clean! Love the atmosphere, spacious great for families and large groups traveling. We loved the ice cream .. taster duo is the best option if you come full after eating at any of the restaurants or markets around the beautiful area. Lots of parking options around!

Yelp
Cleveland has a lot to offer. Mitchell's is a definite treasure. Friendly staff who offer the best scoop of dairy (or non-dairy) ice cream. Did try a sample but settled for one of my favorites, blackcherry with dark chocolate chunks. Multiple size choices for dish or cone. Sundaes, shakes, malts. Take a pint or quart home or enjoy a cake or pie. Don't think you can miss between the flavors or how it's served. Great place if you happen to be in Cleveland. Ambiance was quiet shop with a train that is on a raised platform. Bringing the kiddoes? They have window seats just for them!

Minji K.

Yelp
Can't pass on ice cream in the winter, especially if it's from Mitchell's! They have such a wide range of homemade ice cream flavors, with seasonal ones like cinnamon, egg nog, and amaretto cookie! I was craving something refreshing so I went for the lemon black raspberry yogurt, which was slightly tart and had sweet berry swirls, and the wild berry crumble, which had yummy pieces of pie crumble in every bite. I liked how both flavors weren't overly sweet and yet the flavor profiles were so accurate. There was plenty of indoor seating and pints available for sale in their freezers. I also liked how the tables had mini vases with fresh flowers!

Yelp
This was some GREATTT ice cream! I was told that Mitchell's is a strong ice cream staple in the Midwest, and I'm really glad I had the chance to try it! All of the flavors that I sampled were so good that it made it hard to decide which one to get. I ended up choosing the pralines & cream and the coffee chocolate chunk. I was just so happy to eat it. The service was great! There were so many seats, both downstairs and upstairs. I thought it was neat to be able to see their kitchen area where they make the ice cream fresh everyday! Will definitely be back in the future :)

Yelp
Mitchell's Homemades Ice Cream is a charming little shop nestled near all the museums and sites, making it a perfect stop during a day of sightseeing. The variety of homemade flavors is impressive, and the staff is incredibly friendly--they even let me sample a few before I decided on the perfect one. The ice cream itself is rich, creamy, and full of flavor, clearly made with care. I thoroughly enjoyed my treat and will definitely be back next time I'm in the area. Highly recommend for anyone looking to satisfy their sweet tooth with something truly special!

Yelp
This is like the Jeni's ( or Johnson's) of Columbus or the Graeter's of Cincy. Everyone told me I had to try it since it's a Cleveland staple. There was a long line. Mostly parents with kids. The weather was warm so I wasn't surprised by the line! It moved quickly. You can see them making the ice cream behind the counter. A huge window showed the workers making everything. Pretty cool! And there's a train going around the entire ceiling too. Nice touch! I ordered a junior size ( the smallest cup) of Oreo ice cream, while my friend got the same size of the s'mores. To be honest, the ice cream wasn't anything special. It was just like any other ice cream place. I think Graeter's is better. I don't get the hype but I'm sure locals stand by their brands. When paying for the ice cream, they ask whether you're eating inside or not. I wasn't sure and the woman and the register said to just say to go. I didn't get this at first but turns out you get charged extra if you eat inside, kind of like a cleaning fee. Weird.

Yelp
Toasted pistachio may be the best pistachio ice cream I have ever had. The mango sorbet was pretty good too. Nice ambiance Friendly staff.

Dominique C.

Yelp
I had a delightful experience at Mitchell's Homemade Ice Cream Shop. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming. I tried the vanilla and chocolate ice cream and they were exceptional! I highly recommend this shop for anyone seeking a memorable and satisfying dessert experience

Yelp
Now playing: ice cream made fresh. Mitchell's Homemade Ice Cream is the star at this theatre. There was a long line when we entered but we were entertained by perusing the menu, the seasonal flavors, the friendly staff, and the line moved quickly. There's a viewing window where you can watch the ice cream being made, crumble being baked. There's a second floor where you can view the entire production. My cookies and cream was delicious and creamy with lots of thick chunks of cookie. I liked knowing that it's freshly made, with local ingredients, and you can see it being created (even after 7pm)!

JiHae L.

Yelp
This place used to be a live theater, and they transformed it into an ice cream parlor. It's very neat how you can see them making the ice cream in their glass enclosed factory area. I enjoyed watching them. The employee who served me was very nice and friendly. She said that samples were allowed so I had two of what was popular at the parlor. I chose the wild berry crumble flavor and got one scoop of it. I didn't see a line when I went but I did see one as I passed by it later on the same day. There's plenty of seating indoors and some outdoors. Restroom on the top floor and two on the main floor. Overall, the line will move fast and it's very clean where you would dine. They do have tap water if you're thirsty too.

Jennifer Z.

Yelp
Beautiful ice cream shop. Inside and outside seating. You can see the ice being made while ordering food-cute idea. Easy parking. Ice cream was very good. I got banana pudding & a scoop of raspberry. The banana was lip smacking good.

Helen H.

Yelp
Columbus has Jeni's and Cleveland has Mitchell's. They actually have several locations in Ohio. The place is cute, as it's in a building that used to be a movie theater. The marquee outside lists seasonal flavors. I ordered the single duo- cookie dough and lavender honey. Both were nice and creamy. It was a lot of ice cream and a junior scoop would've probably been enough for me though.

Katy C.

Yelp
Stopped in for a sweet treat at Mitchell's while in the area recently. Nate and I shared a taster's trio with three flavors: wildberry crumble, coffee chocolate chunk, and banana cream pie. This was probably too much ice cream for us at the time, but it was fun to try multiple flavors. The banana cream pie was my favorite, and surprisingly the wildberry crumble was my least favorite as I didn't love the crumble texture and it just didn't have a big berry flavor. The train running around the top of the shop was cute and fun! There's plenty of seating available but we took our ice cream to go. I see now that you can look into their production kitchen but didn't notice that while we were there. They have lots of flavors to choose from including a couple vegan options and sundaes, shakes, and malts. If you love ice cream, definitely add Mitchell's to your list.

Sara S.

Yelp
Some of the best I cream you will find in Cleveland. Definitely a must try! With an amazing variety of flavors that change seasonally is definitely the best option for a hot summer day! Their vegan chocolate ice cream is delicious if you're vegan, extremely tasty and highly recommend! If you love fruity flavors, the mango sorbet is amazing for a hot summer day, very refreshing and feels like you're eating a mango right there and then! The flavor is so spot on! And if you're in the mood for something different, their seasonal white chocolate with lemon and cookie is an unexpected combination that will leave you speechless! Definitely 10/10, so difficult to choose only one every time I go! All of their options are amazing !

Amy R.

Yelp
My friends and I love coming here after dinner in Ohio City. The rotating flavors are always fun to try, and it's great that they can accommodate dietary needs like dairy and gluten free. The observation room is a nice touch as well.

Yvethe R.

Yelp
On a family visit to cleveland they said I could not leave without trying Mitchell's... so I naturally obliged. I liked how it's set up: it has 2 floors so you can order and eat in the bottom floor or take your food upstairs and watch how the ice cream is made! They had a few seasonals and a few tried and true. Everyone liked their choice and we went upstairs to eat as it had less people Word of caution: take the stairs. The elevator is scary slow and I had to open it manually. Consider yourself warned. Otherwise nice and worth the visit

Aimee F.

Yelp
THE BEST ICE CREAM. Go to Mitchell's! They have one dairy free flavor that was amazing! They have a ton of other "regular" ice cream flavors that all looked amazing (unique) and very creamy. The best ice cream!

Connor D.

Yelp
It's homemade ice cream... done exceptionally well. Taste-tested many flavors & they were all delicious. Mitchell's is popular for a reason - treat that sweet tooth.

Jenni W.

Yelp
My friend and I came to Cleveland for a mutual friend's wedding and had time between the early ceremony and reception and thought it would be nice to explore this part of the city. We had just had a quick, late lunch at Brightside and passed by and were super intrigued by the flavors. I can be pretty picky about ice cream (i.e. if the consistency isn't right, it's too watery, or too sweet) and was still pretty full from lunch so I wasn't planning on getting anything. We stood in line--there were about 8-10 people ahead of us, but the line moved pretty quickly. And honestly, after sampling some of the flavors, I was convinced to order a junior scoop on a cone. Overall the flavors that I tried had really good consistency, wasn't terribly sweet, and also had the perfect ratio of ice cream to toppings mixed in. I ended up choosing the mint chocolate chunk and was quite pleased. The mint flavor was strong enough to compliment the chocolate chunks well. My friend got a junior scoop of the roasted pistachio, and I will say that was also super super delicious. The almondy and nutty flavor was perfect. This location also has glass windows that allows you to peer in and watch the employees make ice cream, which can be fun for families to watch. I'll definitely be stopping by again if I'm ever back in Cleveland!

Charles L D.

Yelp
I love strawberry milkshakes and milkshakes from Mitchell's are the absolute best! I've tried milkshakes at other places and they do not compare. The milkshakes from Mitchell's are more creamy and the taste is more natural and fresh; compared to other shakes which tend to taste more artificial. Additionally, the staff at Mitchell's is always friendly and patient. The W. 25th location is my favorite to visit and although the line is sometimes out the door, it moves quickly.

Eri L.

Yelp
I got their taster's duo with the espresso chocolate and roasted pistachio. The pistachio had an unfortunate artificial flavoring aftertaste, but the espresso chocolate was a nice balance between sweet and bitterness. It was fun to be able to see the "behind the scenes" for the ice cream making behind the counter. Note: there is an additional fee for dine in.

Mitch b.

Yelp
This was part of a food tour we took, and it was the last stop, and I had the butter pecan, which was absolutely fantastic and we bought a couple of T-shirts, because my name is Mitchell.

Tania M.

Yelp
Wow!!! What a magical spot. So many flavors to choose from. The indoor space is huge! There is also outdoor seating. What's extra cool is that you can see workers making the ice cream while you enjoy yours. I got the mango sorbet. It was perfect. The two workers that helped us were very friendly. Love this place!

Kristin A.

Yelp
LOOOOOOOOOVED this place. If I could bring it to Southern California, I would. I visited this location in the 48 hours I was in the city. Clean, open, and welcoming. A gajillion flavors, all very unique. They let me try a bunch. I ended up ordering...banana cream pie, key lime pie, salted caramel, some choc peanut butter one, and a raspberry chocolate chunk (my fave). ALL WERE CREAMY DELICIOUSNESS.

Ryan M.

Yelp
My wife and I both agreed that this was in the top 3 best ice cream places we have EVER been to. From California to New York and I truly think this is one of the best. The wildberry crumble was like pie and icecream in a cone. Amazing. I had the Bing Cherry and Chocolate Chunk... the cherrys were actually "juicy" and the chocolate chunks were massive. This is a must try!!!!

S. Elizabeth S.

Yelp
The line moves quickly. This is a fun Mitchell's with lots of seating. If you don't see any open tables, walk past the side entrance and down the hallway that starts to the right of the payment counter. Or you could always sit outside! I like that their offerings are consistent for the most part and there are always lots of good options. I'd be even happier if they had more vegan options. Their vegan chocolate peppermint truffle is to die for but unfortunately it's only there during the month of December. I wish they'd keep that flavor in their rotation a bit longer. It haunts my dreams and every year I'm sad to see it go so soon. For those who don't know: they sell pints and quarts for what I think is a pretty fair price, at least for fresh ice cream. If you're buying their pre-scooped ice cream you can skip to the front of the line. Yesterday my boyfriend and I sat outside and shared a pint that we'd paid $7.25 for. That isn't much more than a two-scoop bowl or cone. If I remember correctly, two scoops costs around $6.80. We didn't eat the whole pint, so we got to take some leftovers home!!

Nana A.

Yelp
Mitchell ice cream is a signature ice cream. I love ice cream so I don't mind driving miles to grab an ice cream. In fact, I can smell good quality ice cream from Miles. Their services are swift and decent ,as well as clean seats. Car park is a little problematic at this place.

Joshua K.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream at a very good price! I recently went here on a hot weekend day and was able to place and get my order in under five minutes. The ambiance was fine-clean with lots of natural lighting. I got the peanut butter fudge sundae with the summer special ice cream Campfire Smores. The ice cream was rich and extremely tasty, and there was plenty of peanut butter and fudge. I appreciated that the cherry on top was real and not maraschino.

Nicole M.

Yelp
I got the double taster of pralines and cream and coffee chocolate chip and both were HEAVENLY! I love how everything is well blended so there are toppings in each bite. The pralines and cream has to be my newest flavor I haven't been able to stop thinking about this. There's a big variety of flavors and you also get milkshakes or prepackaged pints.

Chi L.

Yelp
Wow what an amazing ice cream shop. So happy I stumbled upon this ice cream shop during my visit to Cleveland. They make their homemade ice cream in house daily. Twice my friends and I stopped by and they had a line out the door (I understood why when I tried their ice cream..soooo good!). The service here is super friendly but moves with great urgency so the line moves quite steady. The ice cream shop itself is very bright, modern, and clean. I ordered the two scoops of ice cream on a sugar cone, Dark Roast Coffee and Coconut Chocolate Almond! Wow! The ice cream itself is just so perfectly balance of the density--most ice cream starts dripping as soon as you get it, not this one. It held its shape perfectly. The ice cream was rich in flavor and creamy, the Dark Roast Coffee had the strong coffee notes I was looking for and the Coconut Chocolate Almond was perfect! Definitely a must stop spot and is on my list for next time I'm back in the area.

Sonali P.

Yelp
I love mitchells!! easily best ice cream in cleveland. the ice cream is always so flavorful and the perfect creamy texture. even the vegan ice creams (coconut milk based) are incredible. this is one of my fav locations. they have big glass windows so you can see a little bit into the factory behind. they offer tours here too. i havent been yet, but definitely on my list!!!

Mira D.

Yelp
on our midwest road trip, we have been trying the "best ice cream" in each city. mitchell's seemed to be a top choice in cleveland. nice interior and seating, provides samples, but personally i did not think the ice cream flavor selection and taste was anything special. pricing: double for $6.55 (fairly average, little pricey for the area) flavor variety: there are a lot of flavors to choose from on their menu, from ice cream to yogurts to sundaes. they accommodate dietary restrictions. flavor uniqueness: i don't think mitchell's had many unique flavors. many were pretty traditional that you can buy in a grocery store. when paying for ice cream at a shop, i gravitate toward unique flavor combinations and homemade flavors (ex: jeni's and salt & straw), so i was disappointed in this category. // flavors // coffee chocolate chunk: my mom tried this flavor and dark roast coffee. she said neither was very strong coffee flavor (more like coffee with cream and sugar) so she opted for the chocolate chunks. it was average to me. wildberry crumble: i got this because it seemed more original. i believe it is vanilla ice cream with berry and pie crumble. it was good but pretty sweet. caramel fudge brownie: pretty standard, similar to a grocery store flavor tbh. i also tried the fall seasonal autumn caramel apple but didn't like it as much because it has more of an apple cider flavor than a cinnamon or apple pastry/pie flavor.

Eric K.

Yelp
Tasty and a large variety of flavors to pick from all year around. The location is great IMO inside is clean and comfortable. The customer service has always been good from day one years ago.

Goodness I.

Yelp
Really cool place and concept!! Came here on a Friday night and the line was very long. Thankfully, the girls behind the counter were super efficient. They allow for samples and there are so many options. Also, you can watch the people working "behind the scenes" and there's plenty of seating (which is hard to say for most ice cream places) including an upstairs area. I counted about 4 bathrooms as well. Great experience!

Lynn F.

Yelp
Fantastic ice cream. Fantastic service. The fresh made waffle cones alone are worth the trip but the ice cream will keep you coming back again and again. The caramelized chocolate was the best ice cream I have ever had

Kate S.

Yelp
Mitchell's is the best place ever. We come here every week and we bring all of our out of state friends and family here! Best place in Cleveland

Ben H.

Yelp
Less than 5 bucks for a tasters duo is the way to go. Lots of fun flavors and they're all pretty good. One of my favorite flavors is mint chip and Mitchell's does it even better. Parking can be kind of annoying to find when it gets busy though. There's free parking in a row of cars behind the shop but good luck during any weekend night. Ice cream: 7/10 Service: 6/10 Vibes: 7/10 Value: 8/10

Rachel P.

Yelp
First off, you'll notice a mini train circling the seating area at ceiling level. So cute! The girl working was really friendly and offered several suggestions. The flavors were so delicious I had a mini scoop of coffee chocolate chip and mini scoop of banana cream pie. They have to go containers for sale and a big selection of vegan flavors, if that floats your boat. What a highlight of my quick trip to Cleveland!

Van D.

Yelp
Mitchell's Homemade Ice Cream was recommended as a must-try stop while in Cleveland. There are multiple locations and this one is located on the first floor of the Heinen's market. Pricing: - $3.65 Junior - $4.65 Single - $6.25 Double - $4.65 Tasters Duo - $6.25 Tasters Trio There are so many ice cream places out there. I personally judge ice cream shops based on taste, consistency, innovation of flavors and service. This is one of those situations where they service felt like they didn't really want to be there and it was an inconvenience of us asking to try samples so I didn't feel comfortable asking to try too much. Not even removing stars for service, but it doesn't help me want to come back. My friend got a single scoop of the coffee chocolate chunk and I got a scoop of a butter pecan. Consistency is on the soft side and taste was pretty standard. The flavors they offer were really basic. Nothing innovative or exciting. There were a few seasonal flavors but nothing super unique or wow-ing. Especially with this place located in a grocery store... what is stopping me from not just going to the ice cream section and picking something for a probably more affordable price. Don't get me wrong. The ice cream is good... but I'm just not impressed. Cleveland 4 stars... Would be 3 stars in OC/LA.

Ryan D.

Yelp
Some of the best, freshest ice cream I've ever had. Service was extremely with taste testing and offering suggestions. Ambiance was pretty standard for what you'd expect for an ice cream shop.

Jeremy T.

Yelp
I got lucky since the top restaurant and top ice cream spot in the city are only a few businesses down from one another. I was also able to find a parking spot along a side street that was free 2 hr parking. I visited this spacious ice cream spot after lunch and I was happy to see they had a a banana-flavored ice cream, so I got 2 scoops, with the 2nd being chocolate peanut butter. This is a very good, but sweet ice cream and their scoop sizes are generous. I sat inside for a couple of minutes before I needed to leave at a table by the front windows and found it hard to image this place getting full. Maybe if a baseball team came in after a game, it could fill up quickly. In summary, if you're looking for great ice cream in Cleveland, this spot should be on everyone's list to visit.

Jessica L.

Yelp
I love that they have single scoop size but you can get two flavors. It's great because you won't be able to decide on one flavor. The place is fun - you get to see them making the ice cream! Definitely worth a visit.

Jorge I.

Yelp
Super long lines! However, ice cream was really yummy and I enjoyed the flavors they had. The seasonal tiramisu is so good!

Mary S.

Yelp
Some of the most delicious ice cream I've ever had in the U.S. it's a must try. The line is worth the wait. I had s'mores and it was fantastic.

Allyson L.

Yelp
I was just visiting Cleveland and my friend said this was one of the best ice creams she has had in Cleveland. I decided to get a taster triple so I could try 3 flavors. I got the banana cream pie, the key lime pie, and the mint Oreo. Such good flavors. I wish I could have bought pints and put them in my luggage to bring back with me. They were yummy and I hadn't seen banana cream pie or key lime pie anywhere. The next time I go back to Cleveland, I will definitely make a pit stop here.

Joe L.

Yelp
"It was super super good" - 6 year old - J "Umm - super good...no super emergency good" - 3 year old - R

Joe W.

Yelp
Best ice cream in Cleveland so far, and I've tried a lot of places. It's fun to go upstairs and watch them make the ice cream in the back. You can also by ice cream by the pint or half gallon here. Strongly recommend if you are looking for ice cream in Cleveland. The line is always long (for a reason) but the service is quick and they have a lot of seating, both indoor and out.

Binoy V.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious ice cream! No other words really. I like the creative yet classic flavors. Tried the caramelized chocolate with sea salt ice cream & it was just awesome. Generous with their scoops & shakes too!

Evan G.

Yelp
Mitchell's makes some of the best ice cream hands down. There's always so many flavors, seasonal and regular, to try. The offer vegan flavors, sorbet, shakes, and cakes as well. Even if there's a line out the door, it's 100% worth the wait to get a scoop or more.

Zabrina H.

Yelp
Mitchell's ice cream is a signature part of Cleveland! For sure try it if you are in the area. You can get cups, cones, shakes, cakes, and pints when you visit the shop.
