Great food, great prices. The first place I went to in Raleigh that didn't feel like it was trying to charge me for/sell me an experience or atmosphere. Just a normal nice bar. 10/10 only place in Raleigh I finally felt comfortable in

Andy K

Google
I posted directly on their website, but they kept deleting my post. We told our waitress how bad wing night was and she stated, oh well, maybe they will be better next time. Not sure when they do not even own a fryer. Pretty sure Mitch had his taste buds removed before having to taste their chicken on wing night. Well played Mitch. A picture is worth a 1000 words.

I’ve been going to this place for decades and it never disappoints. Climb the stairs and you’ll find a wonderfully quaint bar and restaurant. Mitch’s is a well worn neighborhood favorite on Hillsborough St across from NC State. Go early if you want a seat during football and basketball season because the Wolf Pack Pride runs strong here. Do with daily specials, you’ll have no reason not to enjoy Mitch’s at least once a week😎

Google
Honestly, I’ve loved Mitch’s for years. But they flipped up the kitchen pretty recently and it’s really great. I got my traditional Cuban sandwich today and it was so much better than it was, which was already really good. As a grad student, having an awesome place to get a sandwich (and a beer if I’m done with work) right by the department is priceless. Keep it up Mitch’s, and y’all always take good care of me so thank y’all.

I placed an online order from Mitch's Tavern on May 9, 2025, and paid around $40. When we arrived to pick it up, the restaurant was closed due to a plumbing issue. I completely understand that things happen—but what’s frustrating is the lack of follow-up. I’ve sent multiple emails and haven’t received any response. At this point, they still have my money and I have no food or explanation. Very disappointed in the customer service.

Google
The food is just fine, but that’s not why you’d come to Mitch’s. You come for the atmosphere and vibe - a true local joint with more character than every chain sports bar combined. Whether you’re a Wolfpack fan or not, it’s worth bellying up to the bar here, or finding a window table or cozy booth and spending some time remembering what community is supposed to feel like.

Google
Smoked chicken wings without googling how to cook them is a true fail. Waitress asked, I said honestly the worst wings I ever had. The response was on well, maybe they will be better next week. First time doing wing night without a fryer!!!!!! She knew the sucked, at no time did she offer a comp. She said, come back next week, MAYBE they will be better! I took that as a NO by her face, and I don't blame her! Management says( as I play it in my head) take these out with a smile, gaslight them!! 🤣🤣🤣. This experience was comical. From the time we walked in to the time we walked out. SO BAD. We expressed our dismay., we got no comp,!! So we said, I guess we will take them home and air fry them, and the waitress agreed. AGAIN, agreed they sucked. Since no comp to saying worst wings EVER. We took them home and made them magical! After spending over 30 bucks for a miserable experience with the wings, we still tipped. All waiters and waitresses all over the place, asking if everything is ok, but no feels in the question. We had to flag people down. They really didn't care if we liked it or not. They knew!!!! They knew!!!! Took them home, spent another 10.00 to add corn starch, honey, garlic, soy, salt, pepper, olive oil, etc for the 30 wings we couldnt stomach. Sad!!! Just sad. Can't wait how they respond and make this like I did something wrong!!!!!! 🤣 Yes!!! I fixed y'all's fail! If y'all need a taste tester, I'm happy to help! 😁

We love coming to Mitch’s tavern for family dinners. Love the dark paneled “hole in the wall” atmosphere that’s stuck around & been consistent in the decades of changes around Raleigh. Of course we love the “bull Durham” history, but really more than anything it’s the “neighborhood bar” feels, the down home and laid back wait staff, and the pretty basic, but always good food & drinks. Definitely a family staple.

Ed B.

Yelp
Fun dive bar right across from NC State. Super cool that it is the bar from Bull Durham. We had fast and friendly service with reasonably priced food and drinks. Check it out.

Megan H.

Yelp
We had a great experience at Mitch's. We've been coming for well over two decades. The food is always delicious and the staff is usually a little lack luster, but they're at least consistent. If you're a beef fan, please for the love of all things good in the world, try their London broil. It may not seem special on paper but boy is it good. The space is dark, dank, and there is memorabilia all over the walls. If you're lucky you'll notice the window that hung in the movie "Bull Durham" hanging up in the middle of the restaurant. I will keep on coming back until they close the doors forever. This is a Raleigh staple. If you haven't tried it, you must.

Kellie D.

Yelp
I probably hadn't been to Mitch's in 30 years and was thrilled to see it hasn't changed. We ordered a pitcher of the Bull Durham light for our table while we perused the menu. I ordered a bowl of the vegetarian chili. The flavor was fantastic but boy was it spicy. I had to eat it slowly with lots of water. I didn't notice the menu saying it was spicy but then again I forgot my dollar store readers. One friend ordered the regular chili and also found it spicy. Everyone else ordered sandwiches and chips -- husband ordered the Cuban and son's girlfriend ordered the green tomato grilled cheese and said they were fabulous. Prices are very reasonable. We need to not wait 30 years before we go again!

Mike M.

Yelp
I have been a pretty regular customer for close to 40 years. For most of that time the food and service was consistent. Mitch did a great job providing good food and a good price in a unique atmosphere. The service was almost always friendly and efficient, especially for a college bar. The food quality has slipped since he stepped back from running things, but the service had kept up. However, it was a sad day this past Tuesday when it crashed too. I know school is out and the usual staff may have left for the summer, but the guy that waited on us had obviously NO training (not his fault) and the food would have been marginal for a convenience-store. The floor manager's response was... " I know but we don't make the food". I didn't know how to respond to that.

Ashleigh F.

Yelp
Such a cool place. They also have pool tables. Chill vibe in there I will be back to chill one night and shoot pool. The food was very good. Cubano tasted like it should have and the white cheese on the broccoli? Amazing. Finished it with a shot of whiskey and a PBR Check this place out! It's near NC State .

Caroline D.

Yelp
Good food and staff. The Ambiance is amazing truly feels like an old tavern with a great history.

Lily K.

Yelp
As a student I love Mitch's! They have great drink prices and fun events like bingo and karaoke. I do think the food could be improved but it's not bad.

Yelp
A Quick flashback to 1988 with Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Robbins. Opening bar scene in the flick, Bull Durham, with the aforementioned put Mitch's on the map. It has been a favorite watering hole for NC State students, employess, Alumni for decades prior and since. It is located in the middle of all the college fun on Hillsborough st. It is adorned with an iconic front with an even more iconic and lethal 2 story narrow wooden staircase. After scaling this staircase you are in MT. A fellow Alum joined me for a State Wrestling watch party on a Friday night. The Manager greeted us and escorted us to our party. The tavern is modest in size housing tables and booths with several tv's strategically placed throughout. It has a separate room with a billiard table, and a one holer serving as a Mens room. Our server was equal amounts friendly, patient, and efficient. The menu is also modest with typical bar fare. Our party had 3 nacho platters for 14 and they were appetizing. The owner joined our party and former Coach Guzzo regaled us all for 2 hours. MT is definitely worth the experience. Great location with a storied history, and good food/service. We will return. #crashdavis PS-Next time I will take pictures of the frontage and stores.

Jeff B.

Yelp
Great that this iconic restaurant has reopened and our family was happy to host our oldest son at NC State to dinner tonight at Mitch's. I don't know when I have had a worse service experience. We made our trek up the historic stairs to be greeted by a sign at that top requesting guests seat themselves. We followed directions. We pushed two tables together to accommodate our party of 5. We seated ourselves. We waited. We waited. We waited. We finally felt inclined to stop a waitress after she greeted, offered menus and took drink orders for a couple that walked in 10-minutes after our arrival. She seemed a bit inconvenienced by our request for assistance. She told us she would be back. Finally she came back with menus and asked if we wanted water. I asked her for the beers they had on tap and she curtly tossed me a menu and said they were on there as she walked off. The bespectacled young lady eventually came back and offered to take our order. We offered our orders and resigned ourselves that water was our only drink option since she had moved on to the food order. I noted she was memorizing the orders from our party of five due to the absence of a pen, paper or electronic device to take notes. Her efforts taking our order met my expectations because a few minutes later she comes back to confirm our order. That was kind of funny to us that anyone could be a waitress and that disorganized. No joke. A few minutes pass and she comes back to confirm our order for a third time. She actually explained she was a little challenged this evening since she had taken a nap just before coming to work. Wow. Well the adults in our party had just worked all day and traveled over an hour for a meal at Mitch's. Please understand we always knew Mitch's to be a cool college town destination that offered reasonable service and nice staff. Not our experience tonight. Insult to injury. Three attempts to get our orders right and she still managed to flub one of the orders in a big way. This young lady needs to call in sick next time and finish out her nap. The food on the correct orders was pretty good. The table favorite was the London broil sandwich with just basic potato chips. That has always been my favorite at Mitch's. However, the service experience was so bad that we considered leaving several times before the meal was delivered. Our food was delivered by a gentleman staff member that offered the hustle we recall from previous Mitch's. We were later cashed out by two ladies with one appearing to be training the other as a new waitress. All that was too late after the first waitress. We will not be back and we will not recommend. We wish Mitch's the best but it is not a place for our family any longer.

Jonathan N.

Yelp
The bar scene from Bull Durham was filmed here! Also, the food was great, the service was impeccable, and...oh, did I mention that Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Robbins filmed THE GREATEST SPORTS MOVIE OF ALL TIME here? Seriously, this is a great place. Affordable food and drinks at the place where Crash Davis and Nuke Laloosh began their epic journey. It doesn't get any better.

Faith H.

Yelp
This place is pretty good! Sandwiches are yummy, prices are amazing, and the service was attentive. My only complaint is that there's no french fries, but that's a small cost when everything else is awesome.

Allen D.

Yelp
I've been coming here for well over two decades -- I couldn't imagine being the kind of person that would frequent a place that long while still thinking I'm too good to give it five stars. That kind of person likely drives the speed limit and is "allergic" to salt. That's the kind of person that somehow gets invited to a Thanksgiving, shows up empty-handed, and complains about the stuffing. They have a one star budget, three star tastes, and five star expectations. Polite society used to toss them overboard.

Caroline M.

Yelp
Came in around 1:30-2 last Saturday. Very slow service. Nachos were extremely mediocre. I could have easily made them at home(if not better). Had to go up to the bar to ask four our check bc our waiter "went on break" and forgot about us apparently. Not in a rush to go back.

Joy H.

Yelp
Yummy and good environment. Great service too. I recommend the turkey jam a pepper jack cheese sandwich

Chelsea M.

Yelp
Mitch's tavern is now open Tuesday-Friday 11am-11pm, and 4pm-11pm Saturday and Sunday!

Kelly C.

Yelp
Congrats to these legends for being in operation in Raleigh for 50+ years. Cheers!

Tony F.

Yelp
If you are a movie buff, baseball fan or just looking for a good meal and a cold adult beverage stop in at Mitch's. Very friendly staff and customers.

Spencer S.

Yelp
Awesome Reuben and very cool staff. There are no complaints with this place, only annoyance is the chips. I personally do not care for plain potato chips but that is a weird dislike of mine plus I had the option to upgrade my side so that doesn't go against them. The atmosphere is great as well! Overall perfect restaurant.

Bill B.

Yelp
After two years Mitch's reopened last weekend with new hours that are subject to adjustment as the operation gets back up to speed. They are opening at 4 pm for the next few nights and will be open tonight for the Hurricanes first second round playoff game. Don't try to reach them by phone as the phone has been disconnected. Not sure about the email. Accurate information seems to be on Facebook however.

Amy C.

Yelp
The gumbo was disgusting and the veggies smelled rotten. Phony Owner as well!

Trey J.

Yelp
London Broil sandwich is super good, and the staff is extremely pleasant. They consistently have good drink deals every day of the week and a decent beer selection. Great spot for a sandwich and a beer.

Mia C.

Yelp
Mitch's is my Hillsborough Street favorite. It is a great little tavern with an authentic feel. Staff is always professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. The best part is there is something for everyone to eat, even vegetarians and vegans! (Just ask for no cheese / sour cream on the chili, burrito, pasta, salad). I personally like to substitute the chicken gumbo for vegan chili on the me-Lange. One note is the restaurant is not accessible to wheel chairs or those that can not climb stairs.

James M.

Yelp
On the way home from Augusta Georgia made a quick detour to Raleigh to visit the youngest daughter. She suggested lunch here at Mitch's tavern which is in the edge of the NC State campus. Apparently this place was made famous in the movie Bull Durham. You enter from the street but have to go up to the second floor where there are a variety of tables and small booths. Food selection is interesting and service is great. Prices are incredibly low. Food also arrives very quickly which is a plus when it is lunch time. We tried the gazpacho, fried green tomatoes and the southern melange. All good and the chef did not skimp on portions.

Jill M.

Yelp
Can't beat this place for old school atmosphere. Have to climb some steep stairs to get there, but once you do, you're in a comfortable roomy space for drinking and eating. You might even find your bottom in n old church pew. Lots of tvs for watching sports. The food is great for the price. This was our go to supper spot for St. Patty's Day. Although the Irish stew was sold out by the time we arrived--the Rubens both Corned Beef and Turkey were available and filled our need to celebrate the Irish along with some drinks. Full bar and experienced bar tenders working hard for you. Top shelf liquor available. Our waiter was fine. All three ous rate this as a four star experience. Try the stuffed grape leaves for an appetizer, you won't be disappointed. Update 11/9/19 Warning regarding Cuban--the combination of ingredients is pretty close to authentic--I prefer Swiss over provolone and yellow mustard over brown and Cuban bread over Italian, however all these modifications I can live with. But dried out chewy pork is not acceptable. Truly awful.

Brian S.

Yelp
I used to eat here in college and enjoyed the food and comfortable feel.

Eva L.

Yelp
Love this hidden gem in Raleigh. So close to NC State off of Hillsborough, so easily accessible from campus, but also pretty cheap food. I would say it is southern style food but also vegetarian friendly. I ordered fried green tomatoes that was delicious combined in sandwich with pimento cheese. They also offered a side of soup only all under 10 bucks Definitely wouldn't mind going to Mitch's again. It has a kind and friendly atmosphere but also a cool rustic theme with hardwood floors and cool lamps by he wooden booths. Staff was also great and understanding.

Abigail A.

Yelp
Came to Mitch's Tavern with some friends for lunch and drinks. They had a special going on for beers on tap and the service was pretty good. We got seated quickly, but expect a packed place in the evenings. We sat in the middle section, near the stairs. We got our menus and food in a timely fashion. Although everyone in my group ordered food, I can only speak on behalf of the Gumbo meal, which comes with a side of rice. The Gumbo bowl was a modest portion. It comes with chicken, but I was hoping for more of a hardy, spicy gumbo...which this was not. Despite my disappointment in the food, I thoroughly enjoyed my drink order. I wanted something warm since it was a very windy day in Raleigh, and the cider sounded good. After speaking with the server, he recommended a warmed cider with spiced rum and added a cinnamon stick. It was delicious! A little pricey compared to the beer special alternative, but the ~$8/9 cider hit the spot! This establishment is frequented by college students, since it's adjacent to NC State, but you'll also find some long time patrons. It's a cozy local joint and I'd be willing to come back and try some other food options next time.

Charmaine M.

Yelp
From my experience, the best thing about this place was location and menu prices. I got one of their gumbo bowls - the yellow rice tasted like the Goya Mexican rice I make at home - the greens weren't flavorful - and the shredded chicken seemed to be paired with a can of succotash it just all seemed oddly thrown together. My soup was luke warm and also a miss for me. It could be that I just ordered the wrong things but I doubt I'll go back.

Khalid A.

Yelp
London Broil was a staple for lunch while in college. Definitely worth checking this spot out.

Michael F.

Yelp
Wow Mitch's is great! They have unbelievable prices on food and drinks! Go on Wednesday for $4 Martinis if you're into that but drink prices are cheap regardless. A Don Julio on the rocks will set you back $6. The food is very solid. I'm not from Raleigh but any time I mention Mitch's to locals they freak out about how good the food is and how cheap it is. The decor is very homey too. It's a great place to relax and feel at home with a group The gumbo was dope. I also had a pulled pork sandwich that was on special. It was super good too. If you're looking for a solid affordable American style meal with solid portions you should really check out this place

John L.

Yelp
Went in last night after arriving into town late. It was fantastic and not to busy. Great food and atmosphere

Simona N.

Yelp
I went to Mitch's Tavern this past summer when I was in Raleigh. I enjoyed Mitch's Tavern! Mitch's Tavern is on the second floor of a building. To enter Mitch's Tavern you walk up a staircase right after you open the door to Mitch's. For dinner, I got the Cuban sandwich. I thought the Cuban sandwich was alright. I didn't think the sandwich was amazing but still good. Since I didn't think the sandwich was great, I am deducting one star. The servers were quick and friendly! I think that this is a good place to go for dinner or to hang out with friends. Mitch's Tavern is near North Carolina State Univeristy and I think it's a great place in a great location for the college students that go there! Overall, I had a good experience at Mitch's Tavern. I recommend Mitch's Tavern to anyone that is in the area and looking for a quick bite to eat! Enjoy! Simona

Macy S.

Yelp
You don't get what you pay for here. You get 2x what you pay for!! I've loved Mitch's since I was a student. They have amazing deals - perfect for students and real adults too. I ordered the large Greek salad today - $6.95 if I remember correctly - it came with lots of pita bread, small container of hummus, salad, a scoop of potato salad on top, and at least 7 grape leaf wraps! It will last me 2.5 meals!! I swear it's cheaper than grocery shopping!

Ari-Ahna E.

Yelp
As a legacy State fan I have loved Mitch's for years. I spent my night at Mitch's tonight with some friends. After two rounds of beers and dinner across the four of us, my buddy and I paid for the two checks including our girlfriends. They left and we decided to stay for the rest of the nfl Saturday night game. My girlfriend and I finished our drinks and we're about to leave and when putting our coats on we said Merry Christmas to which we were told "have a great night, come back when you can tip." I had tipped cash-$6 on a $25 bill- so that was weird. When I asked what the bartender said, she responded "fuck you, go home". As a State fan who's family has been coming to Mitch's for multiple decades, this was sad and likely the end of us coming here. -M.M

Emily L.

Yelp
Oh Mitch's. What can I say that hasn't been said. This place really has it all. Great atmosphere on slow days or busy nights. Located in an older building, with lots of character, it sits across the street from NC State's main campus and I spent many many breaks between classes here doing homework with a beer. Speaking of beer, the drink specials are some of the best, and they've got a great selection as well. I'm a creature of habit so I often get the same food every time, but occasionally i'll switch it up. The fried green tomato sandwich with pimento cheese is one of my favorites. And you can never go wrong with the London broil! They have something for everyone. Plenty of vegetarian dishes and healthy lighter fare as well. The best part? Everything is affordable. I can't say enough about how much I love this place, and maybe its just the nostalgia of my college days speaking, but Mitch's is definitely one of my favorite Raleigh staples!

Marion L.

Yelp
Stopped on our way through Raleigh and couldn't have been happier. Friendly staff, good food and beer. Would definitely recommend!

Tricity A.

Yelp
Sometimes it's packed but it's usually pretty quick and the food is good! It's right across from NC State, so a lot of students are here especially a peak lunch times during the week. I've come at noon before, and while it had a lot of people there, I was able to get a table and food without too much time. The kitchen itself is quick with food prep. I've ordered the tacos a lot recently and they're amazing! The taco selection rotates (sometimes beef, pork, etc). It's a good place for a not-fast-food-but-still-reasonably-quick lunch. They have a decent beer selection, also, but usually I'm just there for lunch. Wait staff is always very friendly.

Paul W.

Yelp
No it's not elite. No it's not gourmet. Yes it is cheap. And grungy. And perfect. Authentic tavern, great bar and friendly Cheers atmosphere. Stop here to start or finish your night out.

Candi M.

Yelp
Mitch's was a real letdown from when we visited in college. They had piled high deli sandwiches back then. The only sandwich on the lunch menu was a Cuban which I ordered but it was mediocre with pre-opened chips. Service was pleasant but they need a deep clean of this restaurant. We sat by a window with broken glass and spider webs everywhere. And no these weren't part of any Halloween decor.

Lucy W.

Yelp
A classic Raleigh staple that brings back great memories of college... and somehow, the prices haven't kept up with inflation! I think the prices are the same as they were 15+ years ago when I was a student at NC State. Mitch's offers incredible bang for the buck, with tasty food and a fun college atmosphere. It's a great spot for students and returning alumni alike! My parents had dates here in the 70s. I enjoyed the occasional beer here in the early 2000s. And when I returned here with my husband last weekend, it brought back fond memories. My husband and I grabbed an open booth and took in the surroundings. The decor is as quirky as ever, with wood floors and walls, massive portraits, random snapshots, a mounted deer head, a giraffe statue and other fascinating details. Our server was friendly. She brought us a few different menus (beverage menu, specials menu and lunch menu), which gave us some great options for the meal. My husband ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which was tasty. I ordered the Southern Melange, which was AMAZING! It was a large bowl filled with rice, collards, gumbo and bread. The collards were tender and beautifully seasoned. The gumbo was flavorful, and loaded with chicken. There was so much that I needed a box to take home the leftovers, as I barely put a dent in the dish. With those two dishes plus two beers, our total came out to a smidge over $20. Pretty incredible! If I still lived in Raleigh, I'd be here on a regular basis.

Jack T.

Yelp
I really love Mitch's. All of their food is consistently good, and I mean, over a period of years and years. I've been coming here since the 90s, when I was younger for the beer; now mostly for the food. They have a pretty good range of vegetarian options. My staple is the garden melt, but really none of their food is bad. And yes, inside it is still a college bar, with all that comes with.

Laurie V.

Yelp
No-frills, solid, quintessential college pub. At 1:00 on a Tuesday this joint was hoppin' for lunch. I chose a seat at the bar, and I enjoyed the quick and efficient service. I only paid the meter for about 40 minutes, but I was in and out in much less time than that. My lunch was simple: turkey and swiss sandwich, side of potato salad, and a $3 draft. There were several local drafts offered for 3 bucks. I chose a Fullsteam pilsner. Ambiance is nice. Dark wood, dimly lit, upstairs venue. Seems to have been around for years, attracting scholars, professors, and locals alike.

Jean K.

Yelp
Climb 21 steps to reach this cozy little tavern overlooking Hillsborough Street and you'll find a relaxed, casual atmosphere with friendly employees serving up some delicious food and drink. It feels like an old tavern with noisy wooden floors, interesting (albeit sometimes a little creepy) artwork (including a painting of a young girl with dark eyes holding a jester doll), and oddly placed mirrors; though, with several TVs broadcasting ESPN, you can watch the game and feel like you're in a friend's cozy living room. Rodolfo's feast was delicious. It's a simple meal but has a lot of flavor: chili and salsa piled on top of pasta. Mmm. I imagined Rodolfo would definitely feast on this after fighting battles in the field all day. Aargh. It was a hearty portion and included 2 thick slices of toasted crusty bread. Choose vegetarian or regular chili. It's all served up on an aluminum saucer (which suddenly makes me want to go sledding). Also, they do serve wine, not just beer. And, it's served in a nice wine glass to boot. Great service, tasty (and inexpensive!) food, and a warm, fun yet relaxed atmosphere. Kudos Mitch!

Yelp
So I don't know why I haven't written reviews about this place... (yeah yeah shame on me again) because I love Mitch's Tavern! I had a brunch date with my best friend at Mitch's Tavern today. We wanted something good but something it wouldn't break the bank, so we decided to go to Mitch's Tavern. Mitch's Tavern is on Hillsborough street close to one of NCSU's students dorms, chipotle, insomnia cookies, etc. I did not know about this place till last year even though I was a student at NCSU. The door that you can enter is so tiny and plus, you have to go up to all those tiny little stairs, so it's really easy to miss this place- but once you visit & find out about Mitch's Tavern, you will never miss it! My friend and I got here around 11:40am and it was super empty. Staff were very nice and they took us to the booth. Like always, they had lots of options to choose, daily specials and more. Since they had so many different menu(I felt like they added more options!), it took forever for us to decide. I ordered big burrito and my friend had southern melange. So after we ordered, we were about to start our conversation & ready to catch up everything and stuff, right? Literally after we ordered like 3-4 minutes, we got our food right away. I mean I think it was so much faster than regular fast food places!!!! My burrito was so big that I had to cut it like several pieces but it was def a smart choice! It was full of pulled pork, black bean, rice, cheese, lettuce and more! Lots of fresh ingredients in that huge burrito, and I loved sour cream and guacamole for my side. My friend loved her southern melange too. I had few bites- I loved that soft sweet potatoes, fresh tomatoes & lots of other veggies! If you love veggies, I recommend you to try Southern Melange! So good! I am such a slow-eater and like I said, that burrito was huge, so it took forever for me to finish my plate. It was so nice coming back to Mitch's Tavern this afternoon, I haven't been here in forever. If you are looking for good food/reasonable price, I highly recommend Mitch's Tavern! Thank you for awesome food today, I will be back soon:)!

Yelp
I ordered take out here on a Tuesday evening for dinner. These are my thoughts and observations. - I walked by this placed twice looking for it. It's on the second floor of the building. - They nailed the interior. I found myself admiring it while I was waiting for my food. - To go orders are placed at the bar. I was told you can't get soup or chill to go. - The staff was friendly. - The food here is cheap. You can get a filling meal for less than $8. - I waited 5 minutes for my meal. That's scary fast. - My biggest issue was with the food. I was not aware that my dish was spicy until I starting eating it. It was too spicy to be edible and I ended up throwing it out. Overall, Mitch's has a great atmosphere with cheap food, but my meal has to be edible. It's possible other dishes are better, but with all the other places to try on Hillsborough Street I doubt I'll be back.

Yelp
Stopped by here with a friend for lunch. It was his recommendation and I'm seriously glad he made the suggestion to check it out! I never would have 1. found it or 2. gone in. Super old school, rustic, tavern style decor. Smelled really good inside. The service was very good. The server was really friendly and I was really impressed at how quickly the food came out. I had the turkey hoagie and it was fresh and really, really filling. We went for a late lunch and I'll mostly like skip dinner tonight. Great value as well...a sit down place for $10 including tip for a full meal. Can't argue with that! My friend had the cuban and it looked just has good. Both of us opted for the side of chips. The only reason I knocked it down 1 star is because the menu is rather small. Not a lot of options, especially for non-meat eating people. Didn't get to try their drinks, but I'm sure if like everything else, they're on point. Overall, I'm really glad I checked this place out on my short stint in Raleigh! You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
I mean honestly i don't even know why I'm reviewing Mitch's. It's a tavern. On a college campus. It's not a five star restaurant you review. You gotta climb a flight of stairs (that you think will give out on you but never do) to get to the tavern that's on the second floor. Once you get there it's pretty dark and musty looking. They got booths and tables and church pews as seats. The bar has stools and is where most of the TVs are. The beer menu has nothing over like $5 on it and don't bother with the wine they have like one kind i think and it's not good probably. Sometimes you can seat yourself but they usually sit you because they have a steady flow of customers at all times. Their chili is amazing. I usually get it when I'm feeling sick and it helps a great deal because it's pretty spicy. London Broil is the staple. Their cheesecake is usually what I'm there for. They homemake the compote they put on top. My favorite is strawberry but the blueberry one is great too. In the summer they had this peach smoothie thing that was tasty. They ALWAYS ID, so don't even think about getting away with underage drinking here. I've met professors, friends, strangers and brought family. I've sat for ten minutes and been here for hours. I've been in the summer and the winter and every season in between. The people don't change. The food doesn't change. The place doesn't change. That's why i come back.

Yelp
I wanted to change my original 5-star rating down to a 4-star for a rather particular but glaringly obvious issue. First: the food and drinks are still as good as the last time I reviewed Mitch's. London broil? Great. Fried green tomatoes? Delicious. $2 local pints on Tuesday? Great. The service is still professional and courteous .. save for one person -- and here we go.. There is this woman that works there during the day time. I think her name is Sharon. Whenever I come in for lunch, it's always the most uncomfortable and aggressive experience upon entry. From the moment I start climbing up the stairs, she stares me and my party down. When we get up there? Being seated by her is almost like being subject to some weird prison camp direction. "SIT THERE. YOU SIT THERE OKAY?". She typically leaves and a server takes over after we're seated -- the servers here are always quite nice and polite -- but in the background, you can hear her loudly reprimanding the staff. I love Mitch's, but this woman makes the dining experience unbearably awkward and uncomfortable.

Yelp
Well, I met my wife here 25 years ago and we're still together and Mitch's is still in business so that's worth 3 stars all by itself, right? We still visit at least once a year and it's still, well, Mitch's Tavern. Which is a good thing. We generally stick with the chili, gumbo, meatloaf. or comfort food of the day - they produce some amazing things out of that tiny kitchen, for the price. Haven't had a sandwich in many years but I'm sure they're still good. The menu changes over the years but the basics have stayed the test of time. I like that they've got a full liquor license now (probably 10 years old by now) - back in the day it was all about the $2.50 pitchers of beer and nothing else. On the other hand all we cared about then was watching Jim Valvano basketball - $2.50 pitchers was all we needed. I value Mitch's art selections but wish he would change them out now and then so we could experience more of his good taste in art. I think the paintings have all been there at least 5-10 years now. It's an Hillsborough Street institution, of which there are very few left. PR and Mitch's are about it, in fact. I hope Mitch lives another 50 years because I plan to.
