Mitsuba is the spot for fresh sashimi and creative rolls. Despite its popularity, there is ample seating in the open, spacious restaurant and it never gets packed.
House salad: Crunchy with a zesty orange house dressing. 4/5
Sashimi deluxe: Colorful array of 6 kinds of fish, including tuna (maguro), white tuna, salmon (sake), yellowtail (hamachi), Spanish mackerel (sawara), and fluke (hirame). The best part was that you could see the Japanese translations on the menu and learn about the fish that you're eating. 5/5
Shrimp & vegetable tempura platter: Huge platter of 4 shrimp sticks and mixed veggies that included eggplant, zucchini, broccoli, taro, sweet potato (orange-colored), and Japanese sweet potato (yellow-colored). The tempura coating gave a good crunch, though I've had tempura that was lighter and crispier in consistency. 4/5
Autumn of New Jersey roll: Best roll ever. First, there's no rice. Just tuna wrapped around veggies. Then you smother the roll in the crazy rainbow-colored sauce. You get a sweet, salty, cold, and crunchy kick all at once. 5/5
Tempura fried ice cream: This was a hunk of fried coffee cake surrounding a scoop of ice cream. It looked good upon arrival but fell apart quickly. Flavors could be stronger, sweeter. 3/5
Fried banana with honey: The banana came warm and gooey, with a caramelized coating. Maybe I'm used to super sweet desserts, but I thought this could use more crunch (ahem, more caramel). 3.5/5
They get really busy with takeout orders on evenings and weekends. Even with 6 guys on the counter rolling out the sushi, expect a 20-30 minute wait for your food to come out. And then you can dig in!
