Thirty-five years ago, before I moved to Tangier, Morocco, someone told me that Mix Max, a small restaurant very close to the Place de France, had delicious food at reasonable prices.
I tried it and loved it. My favorite menu item was a salade niçoise which I would regularly enjoy. The salad was consistently good and used fresh and crispy lettuce, a hard-boiled egg, generous chunks of tuna, diced boiled potatoes, fresh green beans, beets and a tasty vinaigrette. The waiter brought a small bowl with very tasty olives while I waited for the salad.
Mix Max is located on Avenue Prince Héritier and directly next to the corner Café de France, now renamed Café Place de France.
There is an upper mezzanine level, accessed through winding stairs.
On a recent visit with a woman friend visiting from Spain, we shared a medium pizza that had a thin crust, tomato sauce, cheese, and ground beef. It cost only 34 dirhams, half of what I normally pay at another place. The crust was thin, crispy and the pizza was hot.
Some reviewers have written that Mix Max has the best schwarma in Tangier. But since I don’t eat it, I really can’t comment. Lasagne, various pizzas, sandwiches, paninis, schwarma, sodas, mineral waters, and fresh juices are all on the menu. The service by our polite waiter was fairly quick.
