I don't have a sweeth tooth but when it comes to ice-creams and Gelatos, I cannot resist.
On our way back from viewing F1 at Scotiabank Theatre Imax on Canada Day, we found ourselves at the steps of Mizzica.
For those who don't know, it's one of the most famous Gelateria in Toronto, and almost everyone I know swears by it.
After Ed's at Roncy this is my wife's favorite, for they offer a variety of flavors.
Being Canada Day there was a long queue, so we stood in line jealously watching kids and families others eat their gelatos on the outside patio. The day was quite hot, so it made our wait more tedious and yearning stronger.
After 20 minutes, we finally entered inside the cafe. We thought they would have air conditioning inside, but inside too it was quite hot and humid. We watched as people tried their samples (only 2 per person) and eagerly awaited our turn.
We tried the Lychee sample first, but it was too sour for our taste. Then we tried Mizzica che rocher, Dark chocololate and Pistacchio from Sicily.
We finally Settled on 3 flavours for the Large Cup
-L'ORO
- Mizzica Che Rocher
-Pistacchio from Sicily
The three scoops - which to my surprise weren't as generous as other Gelaterias we have been to - came in their large cup topped with a round waffle wafer stamped with the brand name, which looked quite pretty.
Due to the heat, the Gelatos started to melt within a minute and so we dug in our spoons.
L'ORO is their award-winning flavor (they don't do sample for this one) . And I loved it. It's base Flavor is Pistachio with a nice hint of saffron. It's a light flavored gelato.
Note: If you are having this one alongside a strong flavor of gelato, you won't get the nuances of this flavor properly as its subtle favors can be easily overcomed. So best is to taste this first, then the others.
Pistacchio from Sicily is similar to L'Oro but has a much stronger Pistacchio flavor. It is a great tasting gelato and my better-half loved this one. This one is not to be missed.
Finally, the Mizzaca Che Rocher. Its has a deep, dark chocolate flavor. It provided a nice contrast to the other two flavors. And being a dark chocollate person, I liked it.
Of the 3 Pistacchio from Sicily was our favourite.
Now, to the real question, is it really a good Gelato and does it live up to the hype?
The simple, straight answer is NO.
Quality wise, though the flavors are good and delicious but I found the texture to be lacking.
A good Gelato is smooth yet dense. Also they have a certain elasticity to them, which I really prefer.
Here, though smooth, it was less dense with very less elasticity.
So overall, though delicious, it is not a great Gelato as hyped. Sorry.
To Foodies: It's a must-try destination. If you love Gelatos, don't miss out on this place. They have some great flavors, especially Pistachio. After this you can try other Gelato places like Death In Venice, Nanis, Ed's , Moss Park Espresso ;), and there is one right across Mizzica called Alaturka and decide on your favorite. :)
To Mizzica : Lovely Flavors , Decent Gelatos. Great Service. One quip is , the scoops can be a bit more generous, especially when charging a premium price. Also, it would be great if you had some industrial fans on the outside patio, especially during this ontario heat wave, for all those standing in the long queue. Also, have a strong AC inside the store if possible.
Overall, it was a decent experience.
