Party like a Viking! I was never much of a fan of Nieuw Amsterdam but had always been keen in visiting Mjolner in Sydney, so I was happy to discover they were opening in Melbourne in that venue.
The upstairs dining area is fairly minimalist with a few viking themed murals and a scattering of shields and weapons on the walls. The main room can be quite noisy but there is a side room that is a little quieter, although the blaring hip hop music jarred with the rest of the theme.
The downstairs bar is cramped with stools and high tables that are dangerously unstable. There are some private 'rooms' and booths which I think would be the better options down here. One thing I did like about Nieuw Amsterdam - the bar was great. Oh well.
Drinks were good - a tasty bloody mary was my favourite. You can get your beer served in a cow horn (yes a real horn) if you so wish. Upon being seated for dinner we were offered a welcoming shot of honey mead (don't clink your glasses) and later were invited to select our own steak knife for our meal. They were all individually crafted and something Crocodile Dundee would have been pleased to own.
As expected, food is very meat oriented, and the menu is designed to share. The porchetta (that weeks feature) was delicious, and enough for 4 people (once sides were added). We also tried the bone marrow which was very tasty, but did not take up the option of using the bone as a whisky luge afterwards. Knock yourselves out.
The friendly and helpful staff dress as nordic peasants basically (vikings are nordic but not all nords are vikings..or something like that). They even get to add extra bits to their costumes as they please. No horned helmets here though - that's not authentic.
Overall a good experience, other than the music. It was my birthday and I got one of the special shot glasses as an unexpected gift. Well played Mjolner, I will be back, maybe after a spot of axe-throwing next time.
