Unnecessary rudeness.
My partner and I work remotely, and went to this coffee shop to get some work in during our short 1 day stay in Moab. We aren't strangers to working in coffee shops and do not like to take advantage. We always make sure to spend money throughout the day. We don't even use the wifi since it's not sufficiently protected for work.
The coffee shop was pretty empty during our time there. Moab in general is not as crowded this time of year. We saw the signs asking you to not stay more than 2 hours to let other people get a chance to sit, and so we decided we'd stay for a couple hours, and then go get lunch and then head somewhere else.
We had trouble finding another place to go after lunch, so we came back after little over an hour. We figured it might be okay, because it's not at all busy this time of year, we bought more coffee, and we left for a while giving other people a chance to take the spots we had. When we got back, the inside was almost empty so we sat back down after ordering more coffee.
After less than an hour more, the owner or manager came over and seemed like he had a chip on his shoulder. He talked to us and a guy sitting next to us and told us he wanted us to pack up, that we could sit outside, but the inside spots are reserved for people "who want to buy coffee". His attitude was palpable, he clearly thought we were being freeloaders and he seemed upset. Apparently he didn't see the coffee we just bought, or realize that we had already spent almost $30 there in under 3 total hours, and likely would have spent more before work was over. I don't even think he knew we left earlier.
He walked away, and I even went and tried to explain that we had seen the signs and weren't trying to be rude and had bought more coffee, and he seemed pretty irritated and just repeated himself; didn't seem to be listening.
My partner also said they had made fun of his coffee orders. Giving a condescending attitude and laughing.
We would have appreciated not being projected on. I'm sure this place gets crazy in high season and that a lot of customers are hard to deal with, but we were far from inconsiderate and I don't think we deserved that tense exchange. If you want consideration from your customers, you should give it to them as well.
