Must go!!! Michigan wines are usually nice, but Modales is doing a GREAT job!! We tried several different wines and ended up loving the Muscat and the Red Blend but it was a difficult choice to make since I personally liked all their reds. The host was very kind, so was Brittany , who helped us with the tasting. The vineyard is vast and beautiful. The gazebo style seating is really nice and with a lush green view - so calming. Young brilliant connoisseurs and innovators are doing delicious work. Wish to see them in stores soon!

Passing thru on my way to South Haven. What a wonderful surprise. Location is beautiful. Happened to be live music tonight. I sat at the bar and had a guided tour. Missed the name of the gentleman who took care of me but he was 10 out of 10. Absolutely LOVED the experience. Left with two great bottles of wine. If you like a drier wine, I highly recommend.

Google
Excellent wine tasting experience! This Michigan winery is likely my favorite. The service was outstanding. George took us through our guided tasting. He knows so much about the wines. He was able to answer all my questions in detail. We were pleasantly surprised by the exceptional development of the red wines. They have four-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines which made a remarkable wine, considering their age. My top choice was the left bank Bordeaux blend. We stayed for a glass later. Lenore was kind and showed us to our table. The excellent service continued with Bob. It was a great day. Thank you Modales team. Highly recommend!

Google
We stopped by for an spring time artisan day and it was amazing! Wine and spirits were tasty! Atmosphere was very inviting! Asian food truck for the day!! Can’t wait to visit in the summertime!

We were bored yet again on a winter Saturday so we took a drive. So worth the drive. We had a tasting at the bar with Cat and she was the best. We love when someone can talk about the wine to us and talk wine in general and she was great. Awesome place and great wine!

Google
We had a birthday lunch here and it was so much fun. The staff were knowledgeable and had great recommendations. I recommend eating beforehand or you’ll be stuck with their expensive underwhelming charcuterie board. Luckily a food truck was there when we were. They have a ton of games to play inside or room to run outside for kids

Google
A great place to stop and taste or have a glass of wine. The staff is friendly, even on their busiest days and as of 2025 they are now a certified organic winery. The summer music is fun, too!

We had a wonderful guided tasting at this winery with Mr. George. He was informative and attentive. He paid attention to our likes and dislikes and made further suggestions from there. We chose a few wines to purchase and had a great visit.

Yelp
Our first visit was earlier this year and we've been back multiple times since. Modales has some of the better wines in Michigan, at least from what I've experienced. I remember being surprised at how much I liked one of their whites and reds on the first visit. It was like, woah, this is better than the usual wines in Michigan and kind of caught me by surprise. It's a little off the main highway, but I think it's a worthwhile visit if you're looking for some good wine and a chill, friendly-family environment. They don't have a full menu, so if you're expecting to have lunch or dinner, expect to snack on some wine chips, cheeses and meats. While the wine chips are good, I come for the wine and environment. They have bigger events here and there, but I'm fine coming on a random weekday or weekend to sip on some wine and overlook the vineyard.

Yelp
So I have been to Modales countless times and have always felt welcome. We have had great interactions with so many of the staff, the owner and his son. This past Friday we had a rather bad experience. We came in, and several people were waiting to be seated. We waited just a couple minutes and one of the female staff motioned us over and asked where we wanted to sit. From across the winery a male staff member yelled that we had to go back to the waiting area and that there were people ahead of us (I believe his name is Justin). I turned bright red out of embarrassment and my friend was also mortified. The woman who was helping us just continued to seat us without comment. Later the same man stopped by every table around us to check on them. But avoided our table. I felt very uncomfortable at how we were treated. It really ruined our night.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our experience at Modales! The server was so kind and the wine was tasty. I loved the orange/amber wine and ended up buying a bottle. The flights are only available on the patio so you might want to get a reservation. There was live music for the first 30m we arrived which was awesome. The weather was nice and the wine was flowing. We'll be back!

Yelp
Modales is a must on any West Michigan wine tour. The grounds are lovely, staff is lovely, and the wines are pretty great. My party and I did a tasting over a bag of kettle chips and had zero complaints. We were all really pleased with our tastes. Better yet: we ordered another pour and walked through the vineyards. That was definitely the highlight of our visit.

Mark H.

Yelp
Modales has some of the best wines in southwest Michigan. The environment is nice and relaxing. Really great outdoor area. The owner and staff are very friendly. They often have live entertainment on the weekends, as well as some very good food trucks. Join their wine club and get better prices on the wine, as well as access to special club member events.

Auri H.

Yelp
We did not have food. We saw the "charcuterie board" had saltine crackers and immediately passed. The wine was delicious, and we received several extra pours. Unfortunately, if the person that served us is there when we plan to return, we will leave. Talk about oppositional conversational styles. Obnoxious does not even begin to describe. Knowledgable but appalling personality.

Brenda Z.

Yelp
Great experience! Beautiful winery and George was so fun and friendly during our wine tasting experience. Would recommend.

Cyn C.

Yelp
Came for a friend's 40th birthday. We sat at the bar and had the flights. They were accommodating, and we enjoyed the wines and had good fun! We had the charcuterie, and many items were prepackaged that you had to unpack and set yourself up. They have a nice outdoor area where you can enjoy the view on some wooden chairs; it was a bit windy the day we came, but I hope others can enjoy it!

Mark B.

Yelp
We were traveling to the west side of the state & found this winery so thought we'd try it. Glad we did, great wines & enjoyed a whitefish dip with crackers. We will definitely come back when we are in the area next year!

Dale B.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our tastings at Modales. The facility is new and nicely designed. It's inviting and comfortable. George was an excellent server! He was personable in his own way and very knowledgeable about his products. The hostess was very friendly and helpful as well. We also enjoyed the small variety of drier wines they had. Good selection of dry wines for those that prefer something on the drier side.

Brian B.

Yelp
Great surprise visit!! Wine journey was fun. Ask for Zinderella. She was such a fun host for our wine journey.

Todd B.

Yelp
Great Atmosphere and they are producing some Excellent and Impressive Wines! And,their Staff is Amazing!

Gregg H.

Yelp
Really good wine and an awesome atmosphere and a beautiful view. They've done a great job building their brand and produce quality wine at reasonable prices. We joined the club we liked it so much! We'll be back, hopefully multiple times.

Tiffany S.

Yelp
If you think you know (SW) Michigan wine, think again!! Modales really was a pleasant surprise (with lots of truly DRY options). We did the sip & cellar tour with Joe (shout out! thanks for being awesome): Treat yourself to a behind-the-scenes experience at our winery. Enjoy being greeted with a taste of one of our most celebrated wines before we walk you through our vineyard (weather permitting), tell you our rich agriculture history, and then explore our winery's Barrel Room for a sample wine in the making. Afterward, relax at your private table with charcuterie, cheeses, and a freshly baked baguette as we pour you our small-batch wines It's not a huge space, so it was relatively quick but had some really cool experiences like eating grapes off the vine and trying an in-process wine barrel (with a wine thief gadget!!) The charcuterie, cheese & Field+Fire baguette is from Virtue across the way.

Jason H.

Yelp
Good wine. Cant have a tasting outside the building ...but whatevs you can still get a Full glass out there.

Breanne K.

Yelp
We had an amazing time at our wine tasting! It was affordable and delicious. They provided a great variety for all wine drinkers. The quality was incredible. George was working with us and he was fantastic! I would definitely come again.

Victoria O.

Yelp
We stopped by Tuesday for wine and the chacuterie board. The wine and ambiance was very nice however, the chacuterie board was not on a board. It consisted of a package of crackers, salami, and a large bag of kettle chips that were tossed in the middle of the tin plate. Zero cheese. $20.00. We mentioned to owner Jim and he was very nice however not overly concerned with our concerns. As a restaurant owner I almost fell over dead when I saw the what they called a chacuterie board. I will not return.

Alexandra J.

Yelp
Came here for a bachelorette tasking for 7, we scheduled about a month in advance. The tasting was well planned, with waters, crackers, and pencils at each seating. George and team led us through the tasting with good banter, insight, and hospitality--and even asked to take a picture of us as a group. After the tasting at the bar we moved outside and had some great bottles of wine, bread, and local cheeses. The hosts outside were fantastic and also very sociable. Definitely would recommend!

Lisa N.

Yelp
For a Michigan winery, the wine was great. The space is welcoming and the service was great. They seem to have a good amount of business on weekends, so be prepared for a crowd. We were there on a Sunday which had a decent crowd but everyone was commenting on how busy it was the night before.

Evan F.

Yelp
What a great discovery! We were in the area and looking for another sipping experience and decided to give this spot a try...so glad we did! They had socially distanced (and separated) tables on their glassed-in patio area, right under the overhead space heaters. We each ordered a wine sampling tray along with a selection of snacks including local cheeses, meats and crackers. Our server was quite knowledgeable and pleasant as she guided us through the ordering process. We each had a selection of white wines, red wines and ciders. We did not like them all, but many were quite tasty...so mush so that we bought bottles to bring home for use during our family's Thanksgiving meal. We also brought home several six packs of their delicious ciders, an unexpected surprise. With such a pleasant weather day, good drink and food and plenty of tunes cranking through the sound system, we had a tremendous day to remember.

Erin Q.

Yelp
We decided to stop here on a Friday as we were from out of town and were just following signs. We were asked if we had reservations for a tasting, which we did not, but they were able to seat us at the tasting bar. We started to warm up from the frigid weather and perused the tasting options. No tastings on the bubbles. Wah wah! I tried the 2020 Pinot noir, the 2020 rose, 2020 chambourcin, grüner veltliner, and the brut red. They were all solid. Not one that I did not like. I enjoyed the rose quite a bit, but opted to buy the chambourcin because I know my hubby will enjoy it. It was definitely peppery with some cherry and mulberry notes. This winery is newer and beautiful! You can only do a tasting at the bar area, but they have plenty of seating and indoor/outdoor section covered for the weather. I'd love to see it in the summertime! We loved our server and I failed to get her name, or at least remember it after all my tastings. But, she has a six year old lab/shepherd she shared a picture of with us. She was an absolute great help! I also bought the Brut rose because I wanted to try it badly enough. Saving it for NYE though! If you spend $50, you basically get your tasting for free which is $15! You can also obtain volume discounts if you buy more than 6 bottles.

Hannah B.

Yelp
The wine was great. The service was amazing. Cat, the wine waitress was so kind and did so great explaining the different wines. We will definitely go back.

Beth C.

Yelp
Another Harvest Host win! We'd already stayed at most of the Harvest host locations in the area, and opted to try Modales this time. We liked it so much, we signed up to join as members, and plan to have this be our last stop of the day when we explore this region in the future. They have a pretty savvy strategy it seems to me, in that they stay open later than most wineries (8 pm on our fall Friday night visit), which makes this a no-brainer last stop on your winery tour if you're exploring the area. Their wines are also a massive upgrade from much of the region, and they seem to specialize in dry, which is our palate preference. They offer some light nibbles to accompany your wine tasting, but we had just finished a delicious dinner in Saugatuck, so we can only speak to the wine. I was as dazzled by the rose and whites as my husband was by the dry reds (particularly a red blend that we sampled a vertical of -- with the more recent vintage being grown separately and the 2018 version having been grown together). All the staff was incredibly present and it seemed like many of the folks who were there on our recent visit were members. If you're a wine lover who lives anywhere within an hour of here it's a no-brainer to join their wine club. You got a whopping six complimentary flights or glasses per month per membership, Plus discounts on your wine purchases and discounts on the many food and wine pairing events they host throughout the year. We are extremely grateful that they partner with Harvest Host, because after all of that wine we were very glad we only needed to stumble back to our camper van in their field instead of driving somewhere! Both sunrise and sunset here are spectacular, too.

K K.

Yelp
The ambiance is great. New tasting room would rival some Sonoma tasting rooms. Great outdoor space as well. Food all prepackaged so it was fine. Local jam and cheese was delicious. Needed some baguette. The wine was good. They are doing local grapes proud. Have a very diverse wine selection. Everyone can find something that's to their palate here. Service was excellent even though very busy.

Yelp
Okay so, not sure where I've been but I just found this place recently! We have had a house in South Haven for 4 years and I'm just discovering Modales! I'm so happy I did! First, the facility is stunning! So gorgeous and really practical. Tons of patio seating that is covered and the windows can be closed in the winter. So smart! We took the kids out to the grass and sat in lawn chairs while they played with a soccer ball that the folks at the winery offered to us. I had the brut white, which was super fresh and crisp! I decided I wanted a bottle to take home and they only sell it in 1.5L growlers...so I was like sure! It was only $10!! I feel like I was winning the wine game that day can't wait to go back to try the food and the gourmet ice cream! Yum!!

Jerrine O.

Yelp
We grew up in California and it has been challenging to find wines in Michigan that we really like. This is the place to go! Not only are the wines great, the staff and service are excellent... as are their events. We've been to many wineries in the state. This one is our favorite.

Glenn M.

Yelp
We visited Modales while a mini craft show was going on. We enjoyed sipping some good wine while visiting with the crafters and taking in the fun atmosphere

Jickles H.

Yelp
We hit Modales towards the end of the evening on a Saturday night. The place was pretty busy and we did not get the bum rush so they could close. The maitre de spent plenty of time explaining the options of a tasting flight or just a glass out in the patio area. We went for some glasses outside on a gorgeous late October night. We tried a Gruner veltliner and Viognier and both were excellent. Everyone else enjoyed their glasses as well. Some reds and some whites and all were great. We brought home a couple of bottles they were so good. The prices for bottles were very affordable too. If you are out near Fennville and want wine, this is the place to go!

Miss A.

Yelp
Small boutique "new" Winery with a family friendly feel. Apparently only 6-weeks old but their grapes have been grown off premise for the last 3 years. They plan to re-home the vineyards over the next few seasons which I think will only add to the simple scenery here. Honestly I didn't know Michigan had wineries. I came as part of a group from Chicago proper and was pleasantly suprised by the variety in flights! I typically trend toward bold reds and they have a few but their shinning star IMO is the Oodin Brut. The super cool thing here at Modales is they fill the bottles up as you order them. Also in the Tasting Room, they literally pulled Wine out of oak barrels by glass for us and provided brie and goat cheese along lovely fresh plums as compliments. Made the our whole experience unique and memorable! Yelp tip: Marco was the best! Gave us some extra samples, got us laughing & you can tell he truly cares about hosting with the mostest!

Judy V.

Yelp
Even though it was busy we had excellent service for our tasting. Joe was attentive to our needs but not pushy. The wines our group of 9 sampled we delicious, so much so that we bought quite a few bottles to take home. Thank you all, but especially Carol Gonzalez for the wonderful time our group of sorority sisters had on the beautiful fall day.

Jamele F.

Yelp
Great wines that express the terroir to the fullest. Some of the best wines in Michigan. Minimal intervention with maximum results in the finished products! A must stop when in Michigan

April H.

Yelp
Beautiful venue for a group. We joined a large birthday party. The ambiance was lovely with live music and open spaces to stroll. The wines we tasted were good and the cheese tray (from a neighboring small business) was excellent.

Pam W.

Yelp
A wonderful time was had at a dinner we attended at Modales Wines. It was my first time visiting Modales and I was so impressed with their lovely winery, their wonderful wines, and the amazing staff. So much so we joined their wine club. The 2020 Lamastus Red Blend was our favorite. Looking forward to many trips to Modales to pick up our wines and to enjoy this beautiful area.

Grapefruit D.

Yelp
Food, service, ambiance! As a mid-30's couple from Chicago looking to escape-- Modales was such a great stop on our long weekend getaway to Saugatuck/Douglas. Despite a rainy weekend the fall colors were on point, along with the wine, and the DJ in the tasting room patio (playing Riot, Antibalas, Bacao Rhythm, Synthia) just perfect for a Friday afternoon. Side note (Virtue was a delicious and a great outdoors area to tire out GSD dog out beforehand). Love this area!!

Don W.

Yelp
Great wine and great service. Keith was the best server and very knowledgeable about the wine selection. Prices were affordable for a great night out.

Cara A.

Yelp
Jim, Andrew, Jamel, Caleb, Kerry, Ben and the entire team at Modales are all exceptional, innovative, kind, educated, cutting edge and truly fantastic. The venue is beautiful, spacious and inviting all at the same time. The wine, delicious. A great field trip or adventure for families and people of all ages. Treat yourself and share time at this incredible venue.

Jim M.

Yelp
After experiencing another local winery that serves low quality wine in plastic glasses at cafeteria style tables, Modales was a nice change of pace. The ambiance was good, the wines very good, and the service was excellent. Carrie was knowledgeable and accommodating, offering generous pours in real wine glasses. The wine was accompanied by a sampling of local cheeses, a tasty baguette and local smoked summer sausage. We enjoyed a variety of whites and reds, purchasing a couple dozen bottles to go home with us, including the Gruner Vestliner, Pinot Blanc, Riesling and Cabernet Franc Reserve. Best Michigan winery yet...

Laura F.

Yelp
Sweet owner and lovely experience! If it's hot be sure to walk all the way around the building to the big mature trees. Great shade there. But you can also tell they are well equipped to keep serving in the patios in colder weather. Also it seemed like every bottle was $14 (??) so great prices! The menu said that if you do a tasting for $15 and spend $50, the tasting will be credited back.

Tyrell F.

Yelp
What a find! We randomly came upon this winery/vineyard on our way home from a long weekend, and boy are we happy! The physical place is lovely, but the amazing staff and great wine definitely made the experience! Everyone was great, but Kerry was just exquisite! We will certainly make this a regular stop on our weekend trips to Michigan, and we recommend that you do too!

Steve B.

Yelp
Anne was super amazing!! So knowledgeable and so helpful. It's very cool inside and they have live music every now and then. Wine is very tasty and thee we fresh bread is yummy addition. Definitely do the reservation.... You will need it.

David E.

Yelp
Stopped as part of the Lakeshore Harvest Ride. They were a planned stop on the route - the knew 800 cyclists were coming their way. But they would not offer a tasting without a reservation. Seriously?? Why bother being a tour stop. They might have great wine. I'll never know.

Meliss R.

Yelp
Enjoyed this winery we found along our road trip! Staff was amazing helping guide our tasting! Really enjoyed this too and will be back! Wines were really good and cider too! Nicely designed space! Great find by chance!!!

Alina P.

Yelp
We decided to try some new wineries and this place was perfect! First of all the staff is supper friendly and attentive. They are also really well set up for COVID-19 safety. Their new outside bar and patio area is beautiful. I'd call it rustic chic and it's all new and fresh. The best part is all the sparking wines and ciders we tasted were really delish! My husband loves higher end red wines so we know we won't find what he likes in MI, however he said their their Cab Franc was not bad and that's high praise from him. As a final note, they had the most beautiful, clean, air conditioned port-a-potties I've ever seen. This place will now be a must on our list when we stay in Saugatuck.

Jessica F.

Yelp
I absolutely love the wine and the people who work here. I became a member on my first visit and returned yesterday and tasted the new Cab Franc, yum! It had great leathery, tabac, and peppery notes. I'm so glad I became a member, I see many afternoons visiting this lovely place. Thank-you, for upping Michigans wine game!

Allysia B.

Yelp
I was really excited to try some local wineries when visiting Michigan and Modales everything I hoped for. They follow appropriate social distancing guidelines and made us feel very safe which allowed us to relax and enjoy. We made reservations a few days prior which I would recommend doing to anyone that comes here. Their tasting was very expansive and we were lucky enough to visit when they were serving mulled wine! The workers were super friendly and clearly passionate about their work and love for the winery. My only disappointment was that I couldn't take a bottle of the mulled wine home!!

Megan S.

Yelp
Great ambiance, very friendly staff and awesome service. Bought many bottles because it was delicious, could've hung out there all afternoon!

Silvana P.

Yelp
We were so excited to try this winery. We walked in, signed in upon entry, acknowledging there was no host, we decided to wait until our name was called. The staff didn't welcome us, and ignored us. Meanwhile others are being seated and served, signing in after us. My elderly mother went up to the counter and asked staff member what the protocol was and what she recommend we do, since we had 3 young children, who were hungry. This person was so unnecessarily rude, immediately reacted like she was a bother, think of a 15yr old girl giving attitude. We end up waiting about 25min without anyone helping us. I bought two bottles of wine a new server helped me with, and just left. Overall disappointing experience. Gave the winery one star, since the grüner is decent and the server that showed up last was helpful in my purchase. And because you can't give 0 stars. Review is left with the knowledge they may be understaffed. Though I counted a total of 4 staff members and and about 6-8 parties being served. Other people that have waited tables will understand what I'm getting at here.

Taylor B.

Yelp
We stopped in here on our last day in town after going to one of the other local wineries. Modales was superior across the board in service, decor/ambiance and most importantly, wine. We went for the wine tasting loved everything we tried. We even noticed the wine tasting reimbursement with the $50 wine purchase. Their small snacks also looked great but we had eaten before. We will definitely return on our next trip here.

Wendi P.

Yelp
This winery feels like the best wineries in California, both in quality of wine and service. The staff is knowledgeable and passionate about their wines and are able to walk you through their selections to find one that you will love. Their wines remind me of the great wines of Alsace or Germany. The team at Modales really knows what they are doing!
