This was my favorite winery in west Michigan. Every fall we would plan a special trip to enjoy both Fenn Valley Wine and Modales, and buy wine from both to take home to stock up for the holidays. We stopped to Fenn Valley first, got a glass of very tasty cider, and bought our box of wine, and headed on to Modales. Modales seating was only half full inside, but if you were one of their wine club members, you were allowed to sit inside, if not, you had to sit outside in the hot sun, and use walk up service, which was fine. That was a surprise, not a member, then you get second class seating. Drank our wine and ate our very tasty crackers and spread, and went to leave and grabbed 6 bottles of $25-$35 bottles of wine to take home. Went up to the bar tender to buy, and was very surprised when they said they cant sell to me unless i join their wine club where you have to buy 18-36 bottles of wine a year or be charged $75. I was taken back, a business model that turns away a $200 sale, because i didn't sign up for the 18-36 bottle a year commitment club. This winery went from my first place winery to visit and enjoy to now i have no reason to ever return. It is a head scratcher for sure, but hey , i will fine some other wineries that will take my money, and will do business with me.
Update: i appreciate the reply by Modales, but the issue of being able to buy bottles of wine without a wine club bottle commitment was not addressed. So can we buy bottles of wine without an 18-36 bottle commitment? If no, i have no reason to visit and spend my money.
