"Modern Love GAM bridges the gap between Baroque and Modern art with a collection of Italian and European artwork from the 18th to the 20th century. Van Gogh, Manet, Cezanne and Gaugin hang with Balla, Boccioni, Canova and Segantini. Best to make it double header and visit Museo del Novecento immediately after."

We visited the GAM Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan expecting to explore its impressive modern art collection, including works by Picasso, Manet, and Van Gogh. Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed to discover that this entire section was closed for renovation, something that was not clearly mentioned on the museum’s website. As a result, the only part open to visitors was the 18th and 19th century Romanticism section. That said, the museum is housed in the beautiful neoclassical Villa Reale, and the building itself is truly worth seeing. The architecture, grand rooms, and elegant interiors give a real sense of Milan’s aristocratic past, and walking through them feels like stepping back in time. While the closure of the modern art wing was a letdown, the highlight of our visit was undoubtedly Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo’s Il Quarto Stato an incredibly powerful and iconic painting that alone makes the visit worthwhile. Overall, GAM is a beautiful museum in a stunning setting, but it would have been good to know about the renovation beforehand to avoid the disappointment.

Beautiful museum in the historic Villa Reale. Amazing 19th-century and early 20th-century Italian art, with masterpieces by Hayez, Segantini and Pellizza da Volpedo. Calm atmosphere, not too crowded, perfect for enjoying art slowly.

The art, here, was dramatic 🎭 . A little strange in the best kind of way! Eccentric, emotional, full of feeling. One piece I still think about is this sculpture of a laughing older woman. There was something wild and alive in her face. It made me smile, and continues to make me smile and inspire me today. From the moment I walked in, it felt like stepping into someone’s beautifully designed private home, if that someone happened to be a moody, art-loving aristocrat with impeccable taste 😄 The rooms were quiet and rich with detail. Velvet walls, deep colors, soft lighting. Everything slowed down. What I loved most was how the gallery moved room to room. Nothing rushed. I remember thinking how rare that is, to be in a place that invites stillness without being stiff or formal. It’s the kind of place you want to dress up for, not out of obligation but because it just feels right. I left feeling inspired, grounded, and oddly refreshed. Elegant, unexpected, and worth every moment ❤️.

Fabulous museum in grand Empire building that used to be the residence of the Viceroy of Italy under Napoleon and later the Habsburgs. "Modern" here mostly means 19th century (the third floor was closed for renovation), including large collections of works by Giovanni Segantini (1858-1899) and Medardo Rosso (1858-1928). The collection also includes the famous "The Fourth Estate" by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo (1868-1907).

Beautiful villa from the XIXth century with art from the XIXth century inside. Both set pièces and the villa worth the visit. There is also the garden behind the villa.

Galleria d’Arte Moderna is located inside the elegant Villa Reale, and offers a peaceful, less crowded alternative to the city’s bigger museums. The collection focuses on 18th–20th century art, including works by Hayez, Segantini, Picasso, Manet and more. The interior itself—ornate ceilings and classical rooms—adds to the charm. Tickets are very affordable (€5 full / €3 reduced), and it’s free on the first Sunday of every month. You can easily enjoy it in about 1–2 hours, which makes it perfect if you’re short on time.

Yelp
Another two hours with modern art (not contemporary art, which is different). This is classic art from the last century or so and was a wonderful time. The museum offers free lockers for storing your stuff and they permit photography though no selfie sticks, tripods or flash. Standard museum stuff. They also have a free wifi that worked quite well. Culptures, paintings, artworks and more. Major focus on Italian works, which is understandable. I specifically enjoyed the works I've uploaded. Emilio Longoni (1859-1932) "Glacier" (1912), Guglielmo Giardi (1842-1917) "Laguna" (1891) and Pablo Picasso (1892-1973) "Tete de Femme" (1957). But there was so much more including sculptures by Rodin and the Parnassus (on the ceiling) and the walls in the Ballroom. Corot, Cezanne, Marquet, Gauguin, Van Gogh. Too many to list. Make the time to visit this museum. Totally worth it and in addition to touring the Duomo, one of the MUST DO in Milan. I only wish that the gift shop in the museum offered some of these prints, but they do not. [Review 10721 overall, 489 of 2019.]

Painters with noteworthy paintings included Andrea Appiani("Queen Elizabeth of Hungary Helping The Poor"),Francesco Hayez("Mary Magdalene"),Guisseppe Pellizza de Volpedo("Fourth Estate"),Federico Zandromeneghi("Young Girl Reading")iGuisseppe de Nittis("Place des Pyramides"),Andreas Aschenbach("Rough Sea Under Stormy Sky",German Realist),Emilio Longoni("Glacier"),Giovanni Boldini("Blonde Bride"),Plinio Nomellini("First Reading")and Gino Severini("Angel of Life"),among others. This art museum is close to the Palestro Metro Station in Milan.

Yelp
I stumbled upon Galleria D'Arte Moderna di Milano while wandering around the area on a warm, fall afternoon. I was also thoroughly excited that admission is free since most museums charge 10 -15 euros. This palazzo is breathtaking and at the time that I visited (Sept. 2010), I was seduced by the curves of the womanly structures on display (see photos) near the entrance. I managed to walk through two floors gazing at paintings and sculpture then wandering around the garden soaking in the sunlight, landscape and more metal works of art. You can easily lose yourself here for two hours and I highly recommend this place!

Yelp
An amazing find in Milan for art lovers. But a little misleading since the art is certainly not Modern-bit rather 19th Century. Each room is full of amazing finds and more elaborate architecture. From neo classics to romantics both paintings and sculptures grace every level. I particularly loved Benzoni Giovanni Maria's sculpture Amore e Psiche which captures a look of adoration between two lovers Take a look upstairs too the rooms are stunning.
