3 Best Day Trips From Dallas | Condé Nast Traveler

"The Modern Art Museum of Forth Worth offers a first-rate art experience without the crowds of people you might find in New York City or even Dallas. It's rather incredible how many residents have yet to make it here to see the sculptures, prints, and photographs on display. The atmosphere makes for a very zen art experience. Whether you have 30 minutes or three days, even experiencing just a slice of the museum can be memorable and worthwhile." - Tommie Ethington, Diana Oates

This museum is as beautiful as the art it features. It is free to visit on the first Friday of the month. There is a happy hour with a jazz quartet in the entrance area.

Google
Oh wow, what a total sanctuary! I loved all the nooks and crannies of this museum, you never know what you will see around the corner. Loved the exhibits, and this was one of the best museums of Modern Art besides Milwaukee. They I have been to. Highly recommend going.

Google
We visited the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth on a Friday, which was perfect because admission is free every Friday! The museum is spacious and beautifully designed, with a great collection of modern and contemporary art. It’s a peaceful place to explore, even if you're just stopping by for a short visit. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area — and even better if you go on a Friday!

Google
When we went most of the second floor was taped off as they were in between exhibits which was a bummer. What we could look at was very cool and I'm glad we went. Also I highly recommend attending the movie theater. The tickets were $10 and we were able to take a coffee in from the bar with their special reusable cups.

Google
What a wonderful experience. Not huge but decent. The water feature/outdoor pond is under construction. My young son loves thevart there.

Google
Stumbled upon a KAWS sculpture location during renovations the view across the water was a peaceful sight. The museum itself was architecturally amazing inside and out, the infinite ladder piece was a favorite as it had me questioning assembly into the space, followed by an interactive installation on the second floor that had miniature a meow wolf experience. Definitely visiting this museum again if visiting Ft worth, Texas

Google
Terrific! Colorful! Exactly the experience we were looking for. Such a clean, relaxing, and fun experience. Exciting, yet therapeutic. A modern museum with a bit of mid-century architectural elements here, and there. Very nice staff, as well! Please visit!

Google
This museum has a variety of modern art. It has a plethora of abstract modern art and some contemporary art as well. They had a Warhol that I liked.

Yelp
Compared to other museums this one is a lot smaller and has a lot less art than what I'm used to. I was able to finish looking at everything very quickly even though they were going to close within 2 hours of when I visited. I think it's a steal if you were to get free admission or get it super cheap but the regular admission is a little more pricey. Some of the staff were super kind but some as I was the last to leave the place because I had to run to the bathroom real quick- made me feel not good - I get you want to go home but that isn't cool to make a guest feel that way.
google avatar

Guy H.

Yelp
Came here to see a special presentation of a matenee art movie. Also visited the two current exhibits. As I've said before,I'm not a modern art "appreciator" as such, however,I love art and will look at anything. Especially a heavyweight pioneer like Robert Mother well who changed the face of modern art generations ago and young up and coming Dallas artist Jammie Holmes. But,for me the real treat is the building. The Japanese architect, Tadao Ando has designed over 120 acclaimed buildings all over the world. If you come here, you will understand. It's a special place... Go

Yelp
Modern art isn't my favorite kind of art, but this museum is beautiful. The architecture is special - open and airy. It provides a beautiful backdrop for the art. They frequently rotate their special exhibits so there is always something new to see. Conveniently located in the Fort Worth stockyards area, you can easily add this museum to your itinerary. Free parking too.

Robert C.

Yelp
Pretty quaint and everything I wanted to see wasnt available for view (murakami, kaws, basquiat) *there was a kaws sculpture but the terrace was closed. Brunch menu wasnt that great. Overall a cool place, but id only go if I had nothing to do.

Kat S.

Yelp
Art was excellent but the front desk agent was rude, rolled his eyes and was not very hospitable.

Yelp
Free on Fridays! Some really interesting exhibits. I wouldn't pay for it but it's worth a look! Ample parking outside. Free

Yelp
Beautiful museum with lots of different types of art to see. The staff was helpful and friendly. There is a cafe I. The museum that had really good food. There was lots of parking and tickets were worth the price.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
Service is lacking in conversation, direction, hospitality. If you need a drink or a bathroom, find it yourself. Not very accommodating and felt like a bother. The price is overpriced but maybe I've been to way too many other hotel spas to compare. They did get me in last minute so if you know the area and what anesthetist you want that may help. Pedicure massage lacked but maybe I'm used to other nails shops or our nail techs were having a bad day

Yelp
Beautiful exhibitions. Highly recommended, we will definitely be back several times. Parking is awesome, staff is very friendly

Yelp
Do I really not have a review of this place? Been coming here since the first year it opened and a proud member. My niece has attended the amazing summer camp for two years. It is my go to place to beat the Sunday Scaries and reset my brain.

Yelp
I loved the 'women painting women' exhibit! So much i went twice. This museum has such lovely architecture and is such a joy to visit every time. I definitely would recommend checking it out if you haven't already. The last two times i went i was able to get in free by being a member plus one or by being a plus one for a military ticket (they had a time where a military ticket could bring 5 guests free)! Their gift shop is also very cool (25 cent post cards!!)
google avatar

Blessing B.

Yelp
I came here during their free admission weekend. They have a parking lot and street parking available as well. Since this was my first time I wasn't sure where to go and the front desk staff was helpful on showing me different routes to take to explore the museum. I started on the second floor and checked out the various modern exhibits, I recognized Kehinde Wiley who has paintings in the Kimball Art Muesum. I'm a fan of abstract art and was pleasantly surprised by the abstract art pieces I saw. Make sure to checkout the sculpture garden on the second floor and the huge kaws statue on the ground floor. The gift shop has a decent selection on postcards (that you can frame as well), apparell, shoes, books, stickers, jewelry etc.

Yelp
We love the Magnolia at the Modern! The only place in Fort Worth to see independent & art house films. Luckily we were here for the art Tailgating happening on August 16th. Loved it!! Much cooler outside after the 8pm film. Liked walking around the exhibits after dark. Hope it can be an annual event.

Yelp
One of my favorite museums, period. Love love LOVE The Modern! The building is gorgeous, the art is thought provoking, the food is impeccable. If you're a lover of fine art, fine food, gorgeous architecture and losing yourself for a few hours, look no further. Located in the Museum district of Fort Worth, right down the street from West 7th and Crockett Row, this museum is close to so much but feels far away when you're there. Truly transports you to your own art-centric world. In addition to the museum itself, there is also an attached restaurant (Café Modern), a gift shop, outdoor lawns, outdoor sculptures and reflecting pond. General admission is $16, seniors are $12, students with ID are $10 and anyone under 18 is free. Fridays are free admission days, Sundays are half off and they're closed on Mondays. Parking is always free. No matter when you visit; the price is always worth it! With your ticket, you'll gain access to the permanent collection exhibition, all special/traveling exhibitions, scheduled tours and gallery programs. If you're coming with kiddos, don't forget to grab some free sketchbooks for them to doodle in when you get your tickets. The building is a piece of art in itself, an elegant blend of steel, concrete and glass that was dreamed up by Japanese architect Tadao Ando. It is STUNNING! The folks over at Architectural Digest agree, they named it "Best Designed Building in Texas" in 2019. The exhibits follow the shape of the building and everything kind of flows effortlessly. I could literally spend hours here. Some artists that are in the museum's collection include Pablo Picasso, Anselm Kiefer, David Bates, KAWS, the list goes on and on. I feel like their is something new every time I come. My favorite way to visit The Modern is to make reservations for Sunday brunch at Café Modern. Enjoy a lovely meal, then take advantage of half-priced tickets to go explore the museum afterwards. Truly, a perfect weekend afternoon! They also do lots of awesome events, some include live music, movies, lectures, even little cultural festivals and the like, so be sure to check out their calendar to stay up to date. The Modern is the oldest museum in Texas, and though it's been housed in several different buildings since it's inception, the soul, heart and passion of this space and it's mission can be felt. It's kept this wonderful place relevant and impactful, withstanding the test of time. One of my most favorite places in Fort Worth. I already can't wait for my next visit!

Yelp
Had a great time at this museum which has vastly improved its collection. So many perfect fits for art displays. Docents are also very good and security is alert. No I didn't touch a thing!
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
If you like modern art, do not miss this museum! My family thoroughly enjoyed the artists on display here. I also found the exhibited pieces to be appropriately illuminated for optimal viewing. Parking was easy and there's a nice outside area with a sculpture.
google avatar

Aubree H.

Yelp
I absolutely HATED IT!! First of all, the art was just so uninspiring, and most of it was literally a blank canvas. And there was CHILDREN!? there was NUDITY THERE!! It was horrific that it was inappropriate for children.i would recommend for people 80+ because the art is more suitable for the senior community than CHILDRRN!!!!

L S.

Yelp
AI cannot tell us what humans can about humanity! I would improve my experience by, instead of ghost actions, instead of empty symbols, instead of junk, actually seeing into the real world, the world of art, and the world artists who understand the importance of the human imagination. Unless you hold respectable critiques of AI in conversation could you call yourself an institution or group of humans dedicated to the integrity of art!

Giovanna M.

Yelp
This was an enjoyable family outing. There was so much to see and some really impressive art. I saw pieces that made me think, that felt nostalgic, that connected with my energy, that shook me to my core, and some that left me awestruck. I think my pictures say it all so I'll end my review here.

Yelp
This Museum is like a smaller version of MOMA in NYC, the building is large tall and spacious with some amazing contemporary Art, there is a lot of room, and not too many Art located in each room. There is a free Friday entrance, parking is free, it has a very soft relaxed atmosphere. We were not able to go upstairs on the day of my visit because they had opening show for new Art exhibition which was open to members only, not nice if one is traveling out of town to see Art, leaving me to make better planning before visiting again. Was it worth the visit absolutely.
google avatar

Becca S.

Yelp
This museum is consistently great. My favorite in Ft. Worth. The building is a work of art. The people working are always friendly, and in the times of Covid, it is nice to go somewhere that is clean, keeps up with the guidelines, and you literally don't touch anything. Sundays are half price and they are also offering discounts to first responders, medical staff, and teachers. The permanent collection is downstairs and special exhibit up. I like the layout with little nooks to wander around. They have everything from Picasso sketches, light installations, pop art, and things that make you go "hmm". They are also open late on Friday nights, and entry is free.
google avatar

Yelp
To sing the praises of one of the world's leading art museums would just be the first chapter here. This is not only a world class museum, but the curators are so innovative, and locals and those stopping by from elsewhere, will always be in for an exquisite eyeful. After watching a recent Art21 special on Mark Bradford I was so excited to see the works from the series come alive inches from my nose, as well as other video works. I'm a huge fan (follower?) of Nam Jun Paik, and it was thrilling to encounter two of his bravado pieces, each with their own mystery and majesty. And Lorna Simpson, oh my, the works on view are some I've not seen, more recent work, and they are deeply all-encompassing. The show that is currently on view has many works built on technology, and several are interactive in various ways. I always leave this museum feeling good.

Yelp
Amazing exhibition Lovely collections Beautiful displays Have a great time exploring.

Yelp
In the top tier of places to eat in Fort Worth. A beautiful, varied menu; great flavors; excellent staff and service. The ambiance is excellent also. Highly recommended. Enjoy!

Yelp
Nice place to gather to listen to smaller groups of the Fort Worth Symphony or to hear the thoughts of some of the Composers. The free parking in the lower level is a big plus. Maybe one day the Dallas Symphony will catch on to this idea! Fort Worth Arts have everything pretty much located in convenient venues with free parking!!

Yelp
This is a top notch modern art museum in the heart of Fort Worth's Cultural District. I've been to the theater here for a UTA short films showing and explored the Vortex by Richard Serra outside. But last weekend I finally enjoyed the museum itself. Parking is normally free, but due to the rodeo at nearby Will Rogers Coliseum, they were charging $15 and providing a voucher we could redeem inside for $15 towards Museum entry. My gf is a student so I was $8, she was $5 and the museum gave us back $2 to go inside. Loved it. The building is, well...modern. It's also quite beautiful and grand. The light coming in through tall windows and large spaces with converging lines washed with muted concrete and glass create the perfect setting for the display of modern art. A few places were tucked away, heightening the sense of discovery. Good use of the space is made to enhance the presentation of certain pieces. It's a photographer's dream, though I was asked to take too many (typical for me, and something I've never understood about art museums). We visited during the WE, THE MASSES exhibit by Robyn O'Neil, consisting of some striking graphite on paper work that was evocative and engaging. We spent quite a while digesting it in detail, discussing the imagery and choices the artist made. Another exhibit named Ruckus Rodeo was much less interesting to us, very much Modern Art a la Fort Worth, almost to a kitschy degree (brightly covered canvas bulls with cowboys, snore). The staff we encountered were professional and helpful. The permanent collection was mixed for us in terms of interest. The Book With Wings and enormous modern canvas piece adjacent to it were favorites. And, the scrolling text piece was also fun to stare at and enjoy its somewhat hypnotic effect. I would take back half a star for the permanent collection and the underwhelming rodeo piece, but the modern setting and impact of WE, THE MASSES made up for it. And, I love the arts. Highly recommended, with the suggestion that you check the website to make sure the current exhibit is of interest.

Yelp
So pro-tips: Free admission Friday, parking is free in their parking lot! Plus they are next door to the Kimble art museum which opens at 12pm on Friday at the time of my writing this review. Which their regular exhibit is free, but special exhibits have a cost. So try to time your visits here to be able to go to both! Modern art has a cafe with some more upscale food items than what Perot or Ft Worth Science & history have, not a whole lot of kid friendly items if you have a kid or picky eater with you. So due to my teen being with us & timing we saved that for next time. The exhibit halls were very well kept, just make sure to check out all of the nooks & crannies of this place because you could miss a number of items not realizing there was something around certain corners or out a door. They do have employees everywhere if you have any questions or need anything! For sure worth at least one visit while in the Ft Worth area!!
google avatar

Linda A.

Yelp
Free admission?! Why not?! They are offering free admission bc of the renovation to the 2nd floor. So, you should definitely check it out if you are in town!
google avatar

Phillip E. S.

Yelp
Been a while since frequenting this museum, but I saw they were offering free admission on Friday's. That was enough to pique my interest. Upon entering, I immediately checked in and began my journey through the art world. Many of the exhibits I had seen before; however, there were a few new ones. Thankfully, the museum was picture-friendly, and, of course, I snapped a few photos. The docents were really nice and extremely helpful with the few inquires I offered. Please don't miss out on this wonderful trip through modern art. You won't regret it.

Yelp
Sean Scully: The Shape of Ideas, organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art I was so excited having a great chance to visit Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth on the way of science and history museum nearby. I've never seen Scully's artworks so many at once. I just see couple of artworks at Broad Museum in LA, Guggenheim Museum in NY, DMA in Dallas, TX. There's not only vast of his paintings but also sketches, and pastels, all together about 40 artworks. All of his artworks are really impressive at this marvelous architecture, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Amazing!!!
google avatar

Dawn-Rene M.

Yelp
We landed there on FREE Friday! Spent way too much time in the gift shop, rushed through all the amazing displays and managed to see everyone of them! We highly recommend a visit of your in the area.

Patty M.

Yelp
If you haven't been to the Modern, you are missing out. I've lived in the DFW area for close to 25 years and I've visited this museum twice in the last two years. How could I have skipped this magnificent place? The building's architecture is art itself and the collections within are spectacular! Do yourself a favor and go. Take your kids. It's certainly a lovely experience.
google avatar

Trudy C.

Yelp
I really like the restaurant at the Modern, the food is fresh and tasty. They have a great selection and good drinks. Im a fan of their shistos, they are not covered in anything, just some light flavoring. Their quinoa is addicting. The best part is being able to walk off your meal by visiting the museum. Especially on their free days. The restaurant can be a bit pretentious but with the great views and delicious food, i can handle ;)
google avatar

Jennifer Y.

Yelp
The Modern is one of the finest modern art museums in the world. Starting off with fascinating sculptures surrounding it's exterior; nice to come a bit earlier than 10am before doors open for some stomping and callings in Richard Serra's Vortex! Striking is its interior. Beautiful space in displaying their intriguing and thought provoking permanent collections. Presently, having given Artist Takashi Murakami total reins to the museum, a sight to behold it is of his jelly eyes daisies as one enters! Gripping are their permanent and special art exhibits. Enhancing to my frequent fabulous visits here, I have also attended many riveting lectures, captivating workshops, and, engaging docent tours. A visit is not complete without taking at least a moment looking onto the Reflection Pool, serene and intimate it is. Lucky it was for me once in awhile to reflect there on a rainy day, nostalgia rushes in! CHEERS!
google avatar

Raysa S.

Yelp
Easy to walk through Viewed everything in about an hour. Staff very friendly and helpful. Turns out that fridays and Sunday's are free. So no admission fee and free public parking at the location. I didn't explore outside since it was raining but i could see there was water features and statues out there I like there is a variety of art work styles

Yelp
Its always so much fun when I come here!!! Parking can be rough but at the same time if you just wait a little bit, people are always coming out. There are days that ypu can get free admission to exhibitions! I recently went to the Takashi Murakami exhibition "octopus eats it own leg" which was really fun! I also went to the Kaws exhibition before which was amazing too. I love art because I am the least artistic person ever and I love to enjoy interacting and seeing the art pieces incredible people create. It makes you wonder how thier brain and body even created it and you can't help but stand in awe. I have never had any issue with this museum ever! Very clean, lots of workers to help you get around and to keep things clean and not messed up. Theres always something interesting here so I love to come visit once in a while. It is so far for me is the only thing but if you plan it well, you can try to avoid the traffic. They also have a cafe and bar here to sit and relax and eat if you would like. Also a gift shop but it is very $$$$. Definitely would reccomend taking a visit here if you have never been here or visiting Texas. Some things can be a bit inappropriate for children if you are sensitive about nudity and etc!
google avatar

Cyrus A.

Yelp
As someone who doesn't seek out modern art (or art in general, embarrassingly), I was pleasantly surprised at how great this museum is. I had a fantastic time exploring the permanent collection on the ground floor, as well as a soft opening of a Laurie Simmons exhibit (I had never heard that name before) on the second floor. Even without a healthy appreciation for modern art, I would say the space itself made my visit worth the price of admission. The building is absolutely stunning, with a great layout, beautiful views, and lots of room for the art and the visitors. I enjoyed roaming the exhibits and could tell that thought went into how artwork was positioned in the various rooms. Apparently this museum also has a fantastic cafe, but I didn't have time to try the food. Still, I would definitely recommend checking it out when you're in Fort Worth!
google avatar

Kelly O.

Yelp
Parking is free and they have a huge lot. We went on a Sunday because it's feee!! Donations are gladly accepted! We went to see the Ron Mueck exhibit. His work was very impressive and the sculptures looked extremely realistic! Many museums can be overwhelming in size, but this one is not too big (2 levels). It's perfect for a short 2 hour activity. They also have a restaurant with large glass windows overlooking a pond. I really enjoyed coming to this museum and I am excited to see new exhibits in the near future.
google avatar

Mary C.

Yelp
Whenever I get a chance to go to Fort Worth, I usually like to go out to see their museums. Especially the Modern Art Museum. I've always enjoyed coming here looking at their exhibits and what they have. There's always a lot to see and it's nice because some of the exhibit is interactive. Their restaurant here isn't bad either. They have really good sangria and really good salad!

Yelp
The Earth without "art" is just "eh." Okay, cheesy quote aside, this beautiful museum is an architectural gift in its own right. The design and minimalist aesthetic of the structure itself draws my attention every visit. It's brightly lit, clean but edgy, sleek, and expansive. It fits many guests although the parking could be expanded on those busy days (like the last few Sundays of the KAWS exhibit). No worries, though; just make do with side parking. I believe that every three months there's a different rotating set of exhibits, and they'll update well in advance on their website. But I'm sure you can jump on the hype train once all your friends post about these cool exhibits on social media, too. Ain't no shame in that. The Breakdown: Every Sunday is FREE ADMISSION, and Wednesdays are HALF-OFF. No flash photography, and respect the workers and curators. They're the ones who made this all happen for your entertainment. This museum holds some very talented minds and hands. Do visit, if you want to learn about an artist, get inspired, or just have a nice date in Downtown Ft. Worth.

Yelp
What a really cool building! While it is a little smaller than I anticipated, the layout flows very naturally which makes it easy to navigate. The museum is basically a series of rooms, each flowing into the next which allows for a smooth progression from start to completion. There is staff available in almost every room of the museum. All that I encountered were friendly and very knowledgeable of the museum. Upon entering I proceeded to the admission desk to pay my $10 entrance fee (which I thought was reasonably priced). While standing in line I noticed they offer a coat/umbrella check which is a very nice service to provide. There are two floors to the museum. The upstairs areas contains many nice collections of art. Because of the open layout, it also allows for interesting views of the exhibit on the first floor. While I did spend some time upstairs, my visit was all about the KAWS exhibit which was located in the first floor exhibit area. I believe this area is used mostly for traveling exhibits. I had read where there's an extra charge for the traveling exhibits but that wasn't the case for KAWS. The layout of the KAWS exhibit was nicely done and accommodated the large number of people in attendance. In case you're unfamiliar with KAWS, the person behind the amazing collection of graffiti influenced art is Brain Donnelly. He began his career a freelance animator at Disney before becoming a graffiti artist in the New York area. The museum does have restaurant onsite (Café Modern) which serves fresh, seasonal and locally grown food. The restaurant has a full bar and on the weekend they offer brunch so plan accordingly. Speaking of weekends, the museum is the Museum is free every Sunday and on Wednesday admission is half price every Wednesday. As a big fan of modern art, I was thoroughly impressed with the museum and will definitely watch their calendar for upcoming traveling exhibits.

Yelp
Long over due review but I came here for the Taskashi Murakami exhibit and it was awesome! I really enjoyed seeing his artwork and there were so many. Super cute designs and it was really detailed. I also enjoyed viewing the other exhibitions that they had as well. Great museum to come check out. It's only $16 and $10 if you have a student ID. It's also half off on Sunday's and free on Friday's! It's also free if you're under 18 yrs old.

Yelp
Overdue review: I've lived in Texas for over 13 years and this was my FIRST, yes I said first time visiting this museum. I can tell you it did not disappoint! This is a great place to spend the day or a date . To be honest, I really did not want to leave. The exhibits were displayed so nicely to where it flowed. If you've been to other museums, you know what I'm talking about. Sometimes the art is displayed too closely and then you find yourself in a football huddle with your surrounding stranger teammates. It's very beautiful space inside and out! Price of admission, around $16.. bring your student id! The staff! Oh the staff, they are very helpful and FRIENDLY and they know their stuff. I would highly recommend coming here if you haven't been.

Yelp
Visited this cool, modern art museum for an event with one of the local Chambers of Commerce on a Friday night. Great venue, and on 1st Fridays they have live music in the lobby as well as a cash bar. Additionally, because it was Friday admission was free to see the exhibits! Interesting venue and I'll definitely be back to see more of this museum!

Yelp
The recently closed exhibition of Donald Sultan's Disaster Paintings was compelling. This series painted in the 1980s and 1990s relied on the two colors of danger: yellow and black. Mr. Sultan worked on this series for about ten years and it's easy to see the labor involved in every painting. Using latex and black tar over masonite tiles, the paintings look like burned remnants of the scenes they tried to create. The tar has the appearance of charred wood or fire affected bubbled paint. The images are haunting.

Yelp
Probably the most beautiful museum I've ever been in, the art aside. Absolutely huge and very modern looking. It was a busy day but there's so much space that we weren't near anyone most of the time. I was pleasantly surprised and glad we decided to visit

Yelp
Overdue review, as this was during Takashi Murakami's exhibit. I came on one of the free days which was so perfect as a student in the area. Parking was the most difficult part, but this was also on a free day, so it made sense. The space is intriguing and has so much architecture to admire. Then, when you get inside, the variety of art kept us busy for hours. I really enjoyed the whole location of the museum because you're close to many of the museums in the area. This museum is a great place to spend a day! I haven't tried the cafe but I would like to, just look at those views!
