Modern Bread and Bagel

Modern bread and bagel is my favorite stop in nyc for gluten free bagels and sandwiches! They have the best, authentic boiled bagels and latka bites. They also have so many dairy free and vegan options. Love the cookies and desserts here too. Highly recommend this place!

So I am gluten free and I have been waiting MONTHS to travel here from down south. Once we finally made it into the city, this was our first stop. The shop was cute, small but the atmosphere was chill, and the employees were pretty nice. Obviously not southern hospitality lol but we aren’t in the south. However, the food was SUCH A LET DOWN. Like man. My donuts were sour and dry. My bagel was a heaping pile of grease and everything fell out. Not cohesive at all. My mother luckily enjoyed her bagel so I’m glad she did! The bagel itself tasted nice but everything else was so disappointing. And expensive. Everything in nyc is expensive but ESPECIALLY gluten free. So yeah, maybe I got a bad day or something I don’t know. I wanted to love it here so much. But I have to give my true experience!

Anytime I’m in the city. I go out of my way to go to this place. Yesterday I drove 40 minutes from Brooklyn to go there on my way home. I got an everything bagel with cream cheese. The bagels are so so good! Could’ve been toasted more, but still, overjoyed to have a bagel that’s gluten-free that taste like a real bagel! I also got the strawberry glazed doughnut, and the regular glazed donut. It’s impossible to find good gluten-free donuts that taste like real donuts. These made me so happy! Love their food! Looks like they’re starting to grow and get a little faster than they can keep up with so some more staff and seating, might help , but other than that no bad feedback at all . And to be fair wet in the morning, which is probably the busiest time so I imagine later on in the day it’s probably a slower pace with plenty of seating.

I just ate my first gluten free bagel from you today. I am in SC and ordered them shipped to me online. The process was easy and the bagels are delicious. I haven't had a good bagel in 10 years. These are far and away the closest thing I've found to tasting like a gluten bagel. And more importantly they are just a great product. Thank you so much for making them!

Come here multiple times and always had a good experience. The line can get long, but it’s definitely worth it, and the line is much shorter than when I visit the upper west side location. I’ve never had gluten free bagels of this quality anywhere else, absolutely a must visit for anyone eating gluten free visiting New York.

Best gluten free bagel I’ve had and the jalapeño crème cheese was sublime. Coffee nothing special but cakes are great.

I’ve been going to Modern for years now. As someone who’s gluten free, it’s hard to find things that don’t suck, and the recommendations of people are never trustworthy imo. We’ve been trained to think mediocre items are good, because it’s the best we can get. At Modern, the bagels are absolutely divine. It is not a hockey puck like most places, it is not dense, it is not dough-y in a bad way or sand papery, and it’s not tiny. It’s a regular sized, delicious boiled bagel. 10/10. I have had so many bagels from here. Food wise, I’ve had their pizza (UWS location only I believe, or UES) and it did nothing for me. Pizzeria Uno surprisingly has way better gf pizza, the best I’ve had (also, two boots is p good). Their latke tots are AMAZING! I just had their salad for lunch, I’ll take a photo. The fried feta is something I shouldn’t have had the day before starting my diet, as this is something I’ll be craving for the next few weeks. Breakfast burrito is okay, sandwich bagels are okay. their pastries.. I’m so sorry, they’re so bad :( I have tried so many times and I always throw it out or give it away. Even today for the 800th time of not liking a pastry, they had a Twix and I NEEDED to try it because I used to love Twix as a kid. It was terrible :( there’s just something about the flavor of their pastries. They use something weird in it, idk Their coffee is really good btw! So : Absolutely yes to a bagel & a coffee 10000/10 Maybe to food 7/10 You can get better elsewhere, but eh No to pastries 2/10 :( Coffee is fine! 8/10 I love this place though, and a lot of the reviews LOOOOVE their pastries, so I’d say try one and see if you like it. It’s just not for me. ALSO, very important : A lot of the 1 star reviews mention the bad service at Union Square. I go there often, and I’ve never had a bad experience. They have a ton of orders. If you get bad service, you’re probably a shitty and entitled customer.

Omg this fresh bagel is not normal good. Took it home and toasted it and it melts in my mouth the way a regular gluten bagel would. Crunch yet soft. Not hard or chewy.
