On the Grid : Modern Motel

"This mansion was built in 1885, and since then it’s seen many uses. Now, it’s a motel and art studio space. Local artists rent rooms to work on their stuff, and discerning travelers rent rooms to explore Lexington in a centrally located, decked out living space. Keep an eye out for Colonel Sanders." - Bullhorn

Avoid at all costs. At first glance, the property looked decent and recently renovated, but that was not the case. As soon as we stepped out of the car, the atmosphere was weird. When we walked into the lobby, it smelled heavily of smoke, not exactly a welcoming first impression. Even the woman at the front desk seemed unsure and uncomfortable, like she wasn’t confident in what she was doing. We were assigned a room, only to find squatters already inside (the doors have a keypad and open with a code, not a key). That alone should have been the end of it, but the front desk gave us a second room. The moment we walked in, we were hit with the overwhelming smell of smoke, despite the room supposedly being non-smoking. At that point, we didn’t feel safe or comfortable and made the decision to leave, and pay more somewhere else just for peace of mind. Zero concern for guest safety. Zero accountability. Not worth the risk. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Immediately upon checking in we felt unsafe. The rooms are poorly renovated. The walls are paper thin. We were blessed with listening to banging and footsteps from above ALL night. Homeless live here and surround the area. I do not recommend staying here if you are alone. The woman at the check in counter was lovely. Otherwise, we will not be back.

What an affordable find! Kind and helpful staff and clean, comfortable room. It IS an older motel with modern updates --So sure, some things show their age, but then, so do I. Fantastic location. Slept great. I've noticed that some reviews take issue with the strict "no guests" policy. This policy makes total sense to me! Why would people would insist on having guests into their private room when there are SO many nearby places to meet up for coffee, a meal or just to sit and talk? That is, unless...those "guests" were not engaging in "legitimate" activities?? I personally felt safer knowing that management strictly limited the use of their property to paying guests only.

DO NOT STAY HERE — Unsafe, hostile, and deeply unprofessional.||||I had to call the police during my stay at Modern Motel in Colorado Springs due to an extremely threatening and unsafe incident involving the motel’s staff.||||I booked my stay in person and was told that late checkout until 1:00 PM would cost an additional $20. I confirmed this with the front desk and found the same policy clearly listed on their website (I have a screenshot as proof).||||The next morning—before 10:50 AM—three men aggressively pounded on my door claiming to be “maintenance,” yet none of them had tools or equipment. I was alone and undressed, and told them I didn’t need maintenance. One man said he “couldn’t hear me” and told me to open the door. When I said I wasn’t dressed and repeated I didn’t need assistance, he responded, “I’ll be opening that door in 8 minutes either way.”||||This was well before the checkout time I had paid for. Understandably, this was both suspicious and alarming.||Why were there three men? Why no tools? Why were they threatening to enter my room before my confirmed checkout time?||||I quickly threw on sweats, opened the door, and explained that I had arranged a 1 PM checkout. They ignored me. Moments later, a fourth man—either the manager or owner—arrived and immediately began yelling at me to “get out.” When I tried to show him his own website confirming the 1 PM checkout policy, he shouted, “I don’t care.”||||When I began filming the encounter (as a safety precaution), he escalated further. I retreated into my room, and he physically blocked the doorway, refusing to allow me to shut the door and get dressed. I told him this was harassment and that I would call the police if he didn’t allow me privacy to change and pack. He refused and insisted I could “get dressed right there” with all four men watching.||||I called 911. When I described the man’s appearance, he became enraged. While I was actively on the phone with the police, he stepped fully into my room, yelling:||“You better get out before you get a surprise you won’t like.”||||Let me be clear: I was a young woman alone, being threatened with violence, trapped in my room, and denied basic privacy by four men, including the manager.||||This was terrifying, violating, and completely unacceptable.||||I was harassed, intimidated, and treated with outright hostility despite having proof I was acting within the hotel’s stated policies. At no point did anyone take responsibility or deescalate the situation—instead, it worsened as soon as I advocated for myself.||||If you are a woman—especially traveling alone—do not stay here. This motel is not safe. The staff’s behavior was aggressive, inappropriate, and dangerous. I have filed formal complaints with the management group, the booking platform, and state consumer protection authorities.||||Please protect yourself and stay somewhere else.

Absolutely Unsafe This was one of the scariest experiences I’ve ever had while traveling. While staying here, someone tried to break into my room. The door opens with a code, which makes it even more terrifying because it’s unclear who has access. I immediately called the police, but absolutely NOTHING was done, I had zero trust in this place keeping me safe. I was left feeling completely unprotected and ended up leaving. If you value your safety, do not stay here. This motel is not secure, and the thought that anyone could have my door code still makes me furious.

10/10 would stay again. Affordable great option for last minute stays. The room was quite nice for a motel. Beds cozy, fridge cold, no electronics issues. Front desk was great. Exactly what was needed in the moment!

We are a property management company based in Colorado. Last week, we had some issues in one of our properties and we had to put our tenants in a motel. I found Modern Motel online and called and their customer service is great. Carlos, the manager, waived the pet fees for our tenants and they are so pleasant to work with. Our tenants said their stay was pleasant as well.

This motel is actually pretty cute for a downtown type stay. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The only thing i don't like about it is how many restrictions there are. Although it's understandable it starts to feel very intrusive when management starts causing problems where there isn't one... It could just be me tho. Otherwise, it's a beautiful quiet relaxing place.

Yelp
Have no idea, how their rooms are, had a reservation, arrived at 9:10 pm, office was closed. No one answers their phone number on the door. All hotels within 1 hour were booked. Had to drive to Denver for a room. Never received a phone call back from the manager from messages left that night or during the following week. Finally spoke to him, he offered no apology, simply repeated himself that I should have read the checking hours policy on the website and it was my fault. Did receive email confirmations from them in the booking and the did not note the limited check in hours. Never again. They did however request a review on the email.
