"A stroll along Mohegan Bluffs is one of the most dramatic walks available in the Ocean State. The bluffs stand 200 feet above the beach below and, on a clear day, provide views straight across the Block Island Sound to Montauk, New York. After a stroll, check out the picturesque lighthouses that dot Block Island." - Travel + Leisure Editors

This is located close to the South light house on the island. There are lots of steps and has the best views of Atlantic Ocean. Be prepared to carry fluids it gets challenging when climbing the steps back. There’s a view point close by and gives the best views of the wind energy mills in the ocean.

We were sad because all of the moped rentals were out for the day but it was worth the walk the lighthouse. It was a foggy but fun trip.

Great walking area. Beautiful scenery. Great place for photos. We enjoyed the day here walking around looking at the amazing views. The place is very well kept up. There were a lot of people here the day we came. The mansions are totally breathtaking. Great place for a day time date .. definitely will visit here more often

Very beautiful area, great to hike or enjoy the beach. The stairs aren’t as bad as they seem. :)

An absolute jewel of a place! We are in Newport for a few days' vacation from NYC. Nature, walking to explore, the Atlantic ocean and photography are what motivates my searches for new experiences. I did a lot of research before coming back to Newport, and serendipitously stumbled upon a mention of Block Island. We took a high speed ferry to get there. The trip takes an hour. You have seven hours to explore the island before it's time to leave. To say we were stunned by the natural beauty of Mohegan Bluffs isn't to say much at all. It's best to see this geological wonder with your own eyes. We love Newport, and try to come for a few days every year, and now, this glorious little gem of an island has become a must-revisit on our Newport getaways.

Beautiful lighthouse and bluffs!

Yelp
Breathtaking views while walking down the 143 steps to the base of the cliff. Well maintained and up kept steps with railing to make your ascent and decent easier. As you come to the base of the stairs, there is a rope that you must hold on to (if needed) to ease your way down the dunes to the flatter beach. There is a sign that marks half way for those who aren't as active or adventurous as a warning

Yelp
The stairs still weren't fixed when I was there, but otherwise its a great view. I had heard/seen rumors that part of the beach was clothing optional, but was unable to confirm due to it being a little too difficult to get to the beach with the last few stairs out of commission. Great views still though.

Yelp
Beautiful view along the recommended bike tour! There's a nice viewpoint at the top, and there's an option to descend some stairs to the beach. Currently the bottom of the stairs is gated off/closed due to erosion. There are some signs warning that the stairs may be strenuous for those who are not in best health/have mobility issues. The descent was about 50-60 steps, and the steps are pretty narrow.

Yelp
if you are visiting block island, you MUST go here! it was the best part of our trip. Sooo beautiful and peaceful. There are a huge flight of stairs, but definitely worth every step. i will definitely go back during future trips to block island and share this place with everyone.

Yelp
Absolutely gorgeous views. Make sure you wear comfy clothes and footwear, there's a lot of stairs! But the views are absolutely worth the trek. Make sure to go on a nice clear day for the best views. Definitely picture-esque and totally worth it to go!

Yelp
Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous. I had an asthma attack coming back up the giant staircase, but it was worth it. Seeing all the rocks and the bluffs was an amazing experience and it reminded me of Ireland. Absolutely breathtaking. Lol literally.

Yelp
Gorgeous place and a serene beach. Very picturesque view of the bluffs and great to swim at on a hot day. It's going to be chilly, but still worth it on a hot day. Nice place to surf too as the waves can be large. I had a lot of fun running around the beach, taking pictures of the bluffs. It is absolutely worth it to walk down and spend some time on the beach. It's going to be much less crowded on Block Island as it's a bit more out of the way to get to. There are also spots you can walk that are more serene with less people to the right of the steps. Definitely recommend coming out to the beautiful Mohegan Bluffs!

Yelp
This Is My First Summer Living On Block Island. And I Highly Recommend Coming To Mohegan Bluffs! The View Is Absolutely Incredible.

Yelp
141 steps to a beautiful secluded beach!!!! Heavy traffic during peak hours, However not everyone makes it down all the way. ****Its been told if you follow the beach to it's end, you will discover a nudist section of the beach......TBD. Hmmmmmmmm.....

Yelp
Must visit when on Block Island. Wake up early or visit at sunset and you will be rewarded with the most spectacular views of the water. Walk the ~150 stairs down to the beach and enjoy the clear waters and view. Bring a little picnic as there's lots of spots. Just be mindful of garbage as this island is very environmentally friendly and leaving your leftovers is not cool. Plenty of bike/moped/Jeep parking available at the top of the trail.

Yelp
A beautiful place and so peaceful to take in the ocean and the sounds all around and a great place to enjoy being on Block Island!

Yelp
Be forewarned: these stairs will make you breathe like a fat kid with asthma. I'm talking like 100 steep steps people. Not for short people with short limbs like me. Nevertheless, I trekked down and back up. Wish I would've known if you exit & take the right turn out & down the road... there are way less stairs with the same beautiful view & even a beach area. The terrain down to the beach has a rope to help guide you down. It's pretty rocky & declined so being careful not to slip is a must. The view is so beautiful & romantic but packed with people, hard to get your romance on even though it was our anniversary. We sat on a rock & left after 15mins.

Yelp
We walked from the ferry to Mohegan bluff, it was about a 35 minute walk. If 4 of us took a cab it would have been $18. When we arrived you need to walk down steps and there is many steps. The view is beautiful. We stayed for about 90 minutes and relaxed. When you are ready to leave you need to go up all of those steps and that was not easy.

Yelp
On a clear day you can see forever The Mohegan Bluffs are one of the most spectacular spots on all of Block Island, yet for some reason not many visitors take the time to see them. People drive and bike by don't actually stop. I went yesterday, a beautiful July day, and only a small group of people were hanging around the beach. Even though it was a warm day the strong wind that was blowing off the ocean made it feel much cooler. Sure it's a tons of steps to get to the bottom and the clay cliffs can kill you if you're stupid enough to climb on them but the views and scenery are so fantastic that it's worth falling off a cliff or humping up a zillion stairs. Unfortunately the erosion gets worse every time I go and the trail down becomes more and more dangerous. I have a feeling in a few short generations this wonderful spot is going to be inaccessible to none but the hardiest or foolish of souls.

Yelp
This was pretty cool. Great overlook to the ocean and if you're up for it about a 300 step stairway down the the beach. We are looking for glass orbs they hide every year, be sure to Google that!!

Lauren B.

Yelp
Beautiful! I couldn't believe a place like this existed so close to home. One we climbed down to the beach, I forgot we were in Block Island. The climb can be a little treacherous, but so worth it!

Debrin S.

Yelp
Love the natural beauty of this spot! The 150 steps down are well worth it. Safe, well maintained. The views of the beach, bluffs, & Atlantic are spectacular. The beach is clean, soft & not crowded. Great to walk or chill. Come check this out if your on the island ;)

Yelp
Mohegan Bluffs is a great mini stop on a bike ride around the island. If you're legs aren't already sore from the first major hill of biking or even if they are, you should take the time to walk down not only the many wooden steps but also the small path to get to the beach. There you'll find a great view of the bluffs from the ground and maybe even some rock scultpure. The day I was there, the beach was covered with over 1,000 rock sculpures ranging from 3 rocks to as many as 20. One even echoed the shape of the bluff itself. So take a moment and add to the scenery of the space and build your own rock sculpture. Then after you've rested a bit, make the steep ascent back to your bike and continue riding around the beautiful island. If you're not bike riding, Mohegan Bluffs are still walkable from the Old Port. It's not a short walk, but it's definitely doable and I would say it's worth it.

Yelp
One of the best lil hidden gems on the island. You MUST see this place--- if you can even walk there do it! WHY? It is free. It is beautiful. It is about a 10 min bike ride/ 20 min walk + there is a very large sign directing you to the path. At the end of the path is a beautiful wooden staircase down to a hidden beach. The walk down is a lot easier than going up but totally TOTALLY worth your sore legs. Be careful at the bottom as you might bust it on the rocks trying to get to the sand. Apparently { I haven't had a chance to find it yet } there are some secret mud baths located to the left of the stairs... you have to climb to find them + catch them after a recent rain but apparently it is mud heaven. The beach is pretty sandy + rocky in some areas but feels secluded + most people don't make it out there or even down the stairs... since it is a lil hike...it's not even that bad they prob could use the hike but that is beside the point. If you don't mind feeling the burn on the way up, this is your kinda place.

Yelp
Mohegan Bluffs is a gorgeous place to stop for some great views and a trip wayyyyy dowwwwn to the beach for a swim or picnic. I love my (almost) annual trip to BI for a bike ride, swim, and lunch/dinner. I usually ride the opposite direction that the Block Island tourism people suggest in their "biking around block island" tour map. I like to start with a ride out to the North Lighthouse and then making my way back to the "mainland" and heading around the hilly and scenic trek to complete my journey with a swim at the beach below the bluffs. It's a tough ride due to hills, so the swim is always an oasis from the heat of Summer. First you have to get past the troves of tourists taking pictures on the walkway down to the beach. The steep staircase may be difficult for some with any mobility issues and parents may want to keep a close eye on their kids. Once you get down to where the steps end, be careful with the rest of the way down due to sandy rocks and difficult footing that could result in injury if you aren't careful. The beach itself is nice but usually has some party goers imbibing on adult beverages and sometimes being obnoxious. Last time I went the beach was a little rockier than I remembered, so be sure to bring your water shoes to protect your feet if you plan to swim. Also, save some energy (and don't drink too much, kids) in order to get back up those steep steep stairs to get back to your car/bike/taxi to get back to the Old harbor or a quick jaunt over to the southeast lighthouse. Definitely worth the trip.

Yelp
When you visit Block Island, you MUST go see the Mohegan Bluffs and the Southeast Lighthouse; they are iconic Block Island sights. The bluffs are the beautiful 210 foot clay cliffs that wrap around the south east side of the island. The Southeast Lighthouse sits atop them to warn ships away from the rocky shores. Just beyond the lighthouse is "Payne Overlook", where one can look out at the bluffs and also access the wooden steps that go down the bluffs. Constant erosion has created an indistinct landing for the steps at the bottom of the bluffs, but don't let that stop you from taking a few pictures and heading back up. Further along the road, across from Pilot Hill Road, one will find "second bluffs", another beautiful, distant view of the lighthouse and bluffs. **always stay back at least 5 feet from the edge of the bluffs as they are often eroded underneath and can give way.**
