New York’s Best-kept Secret Is This Castle Resort That's Straight Out of a Fairy Tale

"The lake's calm waters are perfect for an afternoon of free boating for guests—row boats, paddle boats, canoes, and kayaks are available, and those with good balance can try paddleboarding—and an insider tip is to take a boat out into the middle of the lake for the best full-picture or selfie of the castle." - Tanner Saunders Tanner Saunders Tanner Saunders is a Brooklyn-based travel editor and writer who has worked for Travel + Leisure, The Points Guy, Thrillist, and more. A very beautiful place. There are a lot of hiking trails, I advise to choose one of them and take a walk. The trail around the lake takes about 1 hour, it is fenced and therefore it is safe to walk along the rocks, I recommend walking along it and looking at the lake and the hotel from different sides. The entrance fee is quite expensive: $35 per adult and $30 per child. Bring a snack and choose the trail you would like to take.

Activities on the lake are operated by Mohonk Mountain House. But anyone can walk around the lake and even ride a boat. We paid about $10 for a boat for half an hour of riding on Mohonk Lake. It's an indescribable feeling!! Mohonk Lake is a very picturesque place, surrounded by rocks, trees and the famous Mohonk Mountain House. There is also a nice bonus: on the pier of the lake you can feed the trout (food is free).

One of the most beautiful places in autumn. The best hiking spot which is about 8 miles with stunning and beautiful nature. Every minute spend here will bring peace and harmony.

I was very disappointed by our stay at Mohonk. This is NOT a place I will return to or recommend for anyone going 1.) in the winter or 2.) with children, despite the marketing to suggest it is a place for families. When booking the reservation, the agent assured me the Grove Lodge would be the best choice for my family with 3 young children. She did mention it was a little separated from the main building but did not stress that it was 1/4 mile up hill climb to get to any of the restaurants or activities (or lack there of). We had to bundle up in snow pants, etc everytime we left the house. THis is ridiculous with toddler age children. There was nothing for kids to do in the winter unless they are old enough to ice skate. Iceskating is outdoors, the rink is beautiful, but it is hard to do this very long in 6 degree weather. We had planned at least to go for some hikes down the trails but were not allowed to do so without wearing snowshoes. (which a 2 year old cannot do). The older children were told by the concierge that there would be snow tubing unless the snow melted overnight (which, trust me, it did not), but this for some reason was canceled and that was a huge disappointment as well. We spent a large portion of the trip sitting in the room (beautiful, yes, but not for the price). The all inclusive food was mediocre. I will not be returning or recommending this place.

Gorgeous but privately owned. If the hikers paths are closed, you can't visit unless you have a reservation to either dine or sleep for the night.

Such a wonderful little lake to take out a rowboat, kayak, paddleboard, etc. Just beautiful.
