12 Best Things to Do in Tokyo With Kids | Condé Nast Traveler

"Located a short stroll from the Senso-ji temple, Mokuhankan Print Parties, craft sessions with professional artists, are the perfect way to break up a day of walking around the atmospheric side streets of Asakusa. Over the course of an hour, kids will learn about the ancient technique of ukiyo-e, or woodblock printing. Pre-carved blocks mean that even tiny hands can make a masterpiece for the refrigerator back home. Booking ahead isn’t essential, but it only takes a minute and guarantees that there won’t be a wait. At ¥2,000 (about $18) per person or ¥5,000 (about $45) for a family of four, these workshops offer great value for anyone who wants a little extra insight into Japanese culture. Don’t be surprised if the older siblings—or parents—in your group end up having as much fun as the little ones. Especially since it’s a low time commitment, a woodblock printing workshop is easy to squeeze into a day full of sightseeing." - Diana Hubbell

Mokuhankan 'Print Parties,' Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan - Tour Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Start with the big picture. Located a short stroll from the Senso-ji temple, Mokuhankan Print Parties, craft sessions with professional artists, are the perfect way to break up a day of walking around the atmospheric side streets of Asakusa. Over the course of an hour, kids will learn about the ancient technique of ukiyo-e, or woodblock printing. Pre-carved blocks mean that even tiny hands can make a masterpiece for the refrigerator back home. Booking ahead isn’t essential, but it only takes a minute and guarantees that there won’t be a wait when you show up. Group sizes vary, but they're never large enough to get too crazy. What's the usual crowd like? These workshops may be mostly geared toward kids, but that doesn’t mean you won’t see a few adult couples breaking the dinner-and-a-movie date routine. Since there's no walking involved, travelers with mobility issues can fully partake. Tell us about the guide. How do they do? An accomplished artist in his own right, Dave Bull is well-known for his instructional online videos and his Ukiyo-e Heroes woodblock print series, which depicts classic videogame characters. He’s also a skilled teacher adept at keeping even fussy children enthralled. In order to stick to the workshop’s tight timeframe, the team moves through instructions quickly, but will always pause to offer one-on-one advice if a child is struggling to get the hang of the technique. Anything you can't stop thinking about after the fact? All of the staff here are artists who are as passionate about spreading the word about ukiyo-e as they are about practicing their own craft. Their enthusiasm is infectious and the level of technical ability on display is impressive. One of their professional prints makes for an excellent souvenir or gift. Anything else we should know before planning to book a spot? At ¥2,000 (about $18) per person or ¥5,000 (about $45) for a family of four, these workshops offer great value for anyone who wants a little extra insight into Japanese culture. Don’t be surprised if the older siblings—or parents—in your group end up having as much fun as the little ones. Especially since it’s a low time commitment, a woodblock printing workshop is easy to squeeze into a day full of sightseeing." - Diana Hubbell

This is a very nice shop for tourist to experience the ancient traditional art of Japan - woodblock print. The carver and artist David made all these fine real ink print. And they are for sale at a reasonable price (and tax free if over 5000¥ for tourists, remember to bring your passport). These are very good office or home decor.

Great workshop! We stumbled across this place at the end of our trip. The thankfully accommodated our large group of 6 for the following day. The work shop is great! So much fun and you get to have a brilliant souvenir to take home! I love art and crafts and it was really nice to get hand on to produce a wood block print. You get talked through each step and there's alway someone close by for support. Everyone in the group thoroughly enjoyed it. We all even then purchased prints for the shop too. After doing it yourself you can really appreciate the time and enough that must go into these piece. Some are quite expensive but you need to take into consideration the time to carve each wood block then the process of printing with them. Fantastic experience, highly recommended.

I love this shop. They specialize in woodblock prints. It was the perfect place to pick up a meaningful souvenir that is literally hand made artwork. They have a variety of prints/sizes/products and offer shipping so that you don’t have to worry about damage while you’re traveling.

Google
What a wonderful shop with a wide selection of wood block prints! We visited to get a more in-depth look at what wood block printing in Japan looks like today and David, the shop owner, spent a good amount of time speaking with me about the art and history behind wood block printing. Learning about designers, publishers, printers, and all the different parts of the process was absolutely mind blowing and I was extremely impressed with the prints that we ended up buying. Absolutely worth it to spend some time here browsing and talking to the staff!

A must-visit if you find yourself in Asakusa. The staff was so careful to layer my purchased prints with hard cardboard so that they would stay pristine through my flights home. They look just as good as they did in the store. Thank you to David and the whole staff!

Small, but wonderful shop which carries on the legacy of woodblock prints. These are not machine prints but reproductions made using carved wood blocks just like the originals by skilled artisans.

I love going to Dave's incredible studio to do a print party. This was my second time, and I brought my new husband with me to try out the print of the month, a take on Hokusai's great wave - the "microwave" (cue laughter). As there were only two of us we got to have a couple of goes and were treated to some coffee midway through before doing what I always do - spending far too much on mokuhanga! They are being shipped to our home address and I'm looking forward to seeing our work and purchases again!
