First, I want to mention that the bed was comfortable and the room was fairly clean. However, that's where the positives end.
This was the twelfth hostel we stayed in on our trip, all of which were shared accommodations like Mola. We're used to the usual challenges of hostel life—noise, inconsiderate guests, messiness, etc. But what made Mola stand out was how incredibly unhelpful, rude, and hostile the staff were when I encountered a serious issue.
While I was showering, someone deliberately threw an open water bottle on my bed and left the room. The bottle was at least half full, soaking my sheets, duvet, clothes, and other belongings. This happened around 12:30 AM, and I was exhausted, just wanting to sleep, which left me extremely upset. After calling my parent for advice, I went to the front desk to speak with staff. The person I first spoke to didn’t understand or speak English, so I used Google Translate to explain: "Someone poured water on my bed, and my sheets are soaked. I need new sheets, please."
He called another staff member who acknowledged it was a bad situation and said they'd contact housekeeping. I returned to my room to wait, feeling unsafe because the person who did this had not only thrown water on my bed but also opened my curtains and looked through my personal belongings. Given these deliberate actions, my family urged me to ask for another room.
After waiting 30 minutes with no sign of housekeeping, I went back downstairs. They gave me new sheets but told me I had to change them myself and bring the wet ones back down. I also needed a new duvet, but the staff member didn’t understand when I asked for one in Spanish. He insisted the sheet was what I had requested, though it clearly wasn’t.
Frustrated, I stripped my bed, returned the wet bedding, and showed him the soaked duvet, finally receiving a replacement. When I asked what could be done about the person who had poured water on my bed, the staff brushed me off, saying they had no responsibility for what happens in dorms and that I should confront the person myself. As a young woman, I didn’t feel safe doing that, especially since the individual had been rude and aggressive earlier, so I returned to my room, still feeling unsafe.
The man who likely poured the water returned at 3 AM, loudly talking on his phone. He proceeded to receive several calls, disturbing everyone in the room. After his third call, I asked him to be quiet, but he made excuses, claiming his brother had lost his room key. This didn’t explain the multiple calls.
In the morning, I went back to the staff to ask for a refund, explaining the awful experience. While one staff member was polite, another rudely informed me there was nothing they could do. They said they might talk to the other guests in my room or fine them, though I doubt that will happen.
Overall, this was an awful experience, far worse than anything I’ve encountered in the 11 other hostels I’ve stayed in (almost all of which were mixed/shared accommodations). I’m confident any other hostel would have handled the situation with more care and responsibility. The staff at Mola completely ignored my concerns until I repeatedly asked for help.
I do not recommend this hostel, especially if you've ever faced issues in shared accommodations before.
