Hawa Hassan’s Journey From Refugee to Celebrated Chef and Author

"Described as one of the biggest and oldest refugee camps in the world and located in a beach town in Mombasa, Kenya, the camp felt like a communal, bustling place where neighbors gathered over tea and shared meals each night. Families set up small businesses—Hassan’s mother opened a dry-goods stall using money from her husband—and people spent their days and nights having conversations about next steps, schooling, and resettlement options; the environment was characterized as supportive and social, “like one long sleepover,” even as individuals faced the uncertainty of separation and relocation." - Kat Kinsman

Very peaceful and relaxing beach. Small snacks and drinks are affordable price. I drank fresh coconut juice by 200KSH, after that I ate coconut insides. It was so nice, they are very nice.

Too many people trying to sell massages and souvenirs. I understand the need to make money but the beach is for people to enjoy and not be constantly asked to buy stuff.

I recommend Mombasa Beach Hotel if you are in Nyali, the views are stunning from every room and the food is great.

The most clean beach I have visited so far. Here you will meet with tourists from every part of the world. It's clean and free to use. No need to book or anything.

Pro - most fun I’ve had in Kenya. Great people, beautiful beach, good food. Lots to do. - Jet skiing was awesome. - visit Yul’s restaurant. Ask for Ayoba. - Fort Jesus & Old town Mombasa! Cons - Uber is more expensive here. Driver demands more. Power outages.

Beautiful scenery, white sandy beaches with loads of fresh air. They have different swahili cuisines in the surrounding restaurants and local drinks, eg madafu. Most of the people around the beach are helpful and friendly, but be mindful of where you leave your luggage. I had a wonderful time at the beach and ate at Mombasa Beach Hotel. Their servers were very nice and attentive. Their food was well made and full of flavours.
