⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — A Sacred and Healing Place in the Heart of Istanbul The Orthodox Monastery of the Life-Giving Spring is a deeply moving and peaceful sanctuary. Steeped in history and faith, it carries a profound spiritual atmosphere from the moment you step inside. The church is beautiful, with rich iconography and the gentle light of candles filling the space. The holy spring itself is a place of quiet prayer and blessing, and the surrounding grounds, including the historic cemetery, are kept with great care. Despite the bustle of the city outside, here you find a calm, prayerful environment that feels timeless. Whether you visit for devotion, history, or simple reflection, this monastery is a true jewel of Orthodox heritage in Constantinople.

A famous Orthodox shrine this is really worth a visit. We arrived early and the monastery had a peaceful contemplative ambience. The spring itself is located down a flight of stairs in a purpose built crypt. One can fill bottles or even drink from taps which funnel the water upwards and it's free. The whole monastery was pristine and quiet.

I find it absolutely hypocritical that when I visited, I wasn't allowed to take pictures, yet two other men who were visiting at the same time took as many photos as they wanted. It is a very small monastery, there's not much to see. I was unable to even say a SINGLE prayer because the caretaker was stuck to me like white on rice. He followed me and watched every move I made. The rules here only apply to "certain people." Overall, it's not worth the trouble, definitelywas a waste of mh time. If I could have given it 0 stars, I would. 👎👎👎

If you are able to make it, this is a beautiful little slice of paradise just outside the walls. There is a legend that this was built in a miracle spring and they have the well down below. The courtyard and church itself are both very pretty.

Beautiful Orthodox monastery and spring. It is quite a distance from all major tourist attractions so not lots of people visit here.

This place is a holy oasis in the middle of an Islamic city. The priest here welcomed me and blessed me, despite me not speaking Greek and him not speaking English. Please make sure to wear appropriate clothing (pants for men, long skirts for women) or you cannot enter.

The Monastery of the Mother of God at the Spring (full name in Greek: Μονὴ τῆς Θεοτόκου τῆς Πηγῆς, pr. Moni tis Theotóku tis Pigis; Turkish name: Balıklı Meryem Ana Rum Manastiri) or simply Zoödochos Pege (Greek: Ζωοδόχος Πηγή, "Life-giving Spring") is an Eastern Orthodox sanctuary in Istanbul, Turkey. The present church, built in 1835, bears the same dedication as the shrine erected in this place between the end of the fifth and the beginning of the sixth century. After several renovations, this building was destroyed in the first half of the fifteenth century by the Ottomans. The complex got its name from a nearby holy spring, reputed to have healing properties. For almost fifteen hundred years, this sanctuary has been one of the most important pilgrimage sites of Greek Orthodoxy.
