Fun food / snacks to pair with drinking (I think fries/wings with asian flavors, it's been a while)

Bay area (Oakland/East bay)

First time here went about 1pm, no line just a few customers seated. Got shrimp fried rice & lumpia to go & scoop vanilla bean gelato. Rice was ok, could hardly see egg & green onion but lots of rice. Lumpiadoesn't have a lot of filling inside & gelato was just ok.. Friendly staff & not a long wait. Not sure if I'll return

Suzanne

Google
I absolutely love their garlic noodles! While its definitely heavy with the butter, its comforting, flavorful and delicious. Love the texture of the noodles and how its packed with tons of garlic. I enjoy the salt and pepper wings and the jambalaya fried rice. The crab fries are so delicious and have a nice hint of spice. I've been coming here for years and having their food always leaves me in a happy and satisfied mood.

Google
My chicken wings still had pink on the inside and it wasn’t just one it was at least two got so disgusted I stop eating it completely used to be my favorite stop but now the food is rushed and lacking flavor and time it takes to be cooked

Google
This place is right next door to the brewery. They make good finger food. Did not try the dishes. I only hit it with 4 instead of 5 because the waiter did not seem like he really wanted to be there. Also I did not eat at the establishment, I eat between the brewery and food place. Should you go? Absolutely!!! Maybe you will have a 5 instead of a 4!

Google
The food was okay, not as good as it used to be. Unfortunately. The beer was fantastic, though. The beer made it worth it.

Google
First time at this specific location, I've been to the original location numerous times but for this specific location the food wasn't as good as it is at the OG spot. The salt and pepper fries were sweet and not salty like I would have thought due to the name being salt and pepper fries. I instantly knew it was accent but just a bit too much of it as I had drank more than a couple cups of water while eating the fries and wings. I also had the garlic noodles but to me the garlic wasn't as present as with the original location. I really wanted to give a good review of this location but maybe I ordered the wrong items? The staff were friendly and the food came out relatively fast considering how it seemed pretty busy for a Sunday but perhaps I'll have to come back to try some of the other items. I'm not knocking Monkey King at all, just this visit had me confused with how the menu items could be different from the original location when they are the second location just with a brewery attached to the adjacent side. Don't let my review discourage you from visiting this location though, it might've just been busy and it could have just been a honest mistake. If you haven't been to this location and have been to the original spot don't hesitate to try this one out if you enjoy a slightly larger location with the attachment of a brewery next door. I'll have to come back here and try it out another time because they do have good food!

Google
I ordered food to go. My food was fresh and hot,but very salty. After many years my food has never been salty. Other than that. Customer service was great. And their food is usually delicious.

Google
Nice place to get a quick bite. It’s not a full service restaurant like the Monkey King down the street. This one primarily focuses on quick bites to share. Nevertheless, the Asian fusion food they serve is still very good. One unique aspect of this location is that it’s right next to Alameda Island Brewery. You are able to bring their beer into Monkey King and vice versa with their food.

Yelp
Tasty and affordable! I'd recommend getting the fried wings and adding on the garlic noodles to make it a full meal. You have the choice of bone-in or boneless wings. They have a large assortment of wing flavors. I played it safe and ordered the salt and pepper wings (with fries) and added on the garlic noodles. The salt and pepper wings were similar to what you would get at a chinese takeout spot so even though it's tasty, I'd recommend trying something new. The person at the counter recommended THIS and THAT. The Hanoi flavored wings also look unique. Next time I'll probably switch it up and also try adding on the tator tots or opting for fried rice. Service was prompt despite fairly busy on a Friday night and the atmosphere was a lot of fun. I'll be back!

Yelp
Eh. The food wasn't impressive but the atmosphere is clutch. I haven't been to the OG location in years. Last I remember the chicken and fries were delicious. Going off of memory, the food doesn't taste the same. The place wasn't too full. You order at the register then grab your seat. I received my order almost immediately. It was piping hot. The presentation is nice. Lots of garlic and some jalapeños. Unfortunately, it had no flavor. In my opinion of course. I would still recommend this place though. It's a nice chill place to hang out, chit chat and watch the game whilst plenty affordable food options Side note: They also sell gelato

Yelp
Years later and I'm still coming back to get This and That Wings and Garlic Noodles! I love that I can sit next door at Alameda Brewing and Monkey King will bring my wings over as I drink a cold beer. You can even bring your dog to Alameda Brewing, which makes it all the better! If you ever find yourself at Monkey King at the Brewery, you can't go wrong with This and That Wings or Garlic Noodles!

Yelp
Good spot for snack food that pairs nicely with beer or other social drinks. I have had their salt and pepper chicken wings before and remembered it was packed with flavor and the skin was fried to a nice crispy texture. So today, decided to try the general tso flavor and it also did not disappoint. Added the garlic noodles (they use udon noodles) this time and their lemonade. I asked for half hibiscus and half pineapple flavor and it was a good mix for the refreshing drink.

Mia K.

Yelp
I'm truly disappointed with how bad the service has become at what used to be one of my favorite spots. We placed our food order at 6:33 PM. The wings came out at 6:55 PM, but the garlic noodles didn't arrive until 7:45 PM--and they were cold. No one came back to refill our waters or check if we needed anything. I also ordered a cocktail at 6:40 PM, which took forever to arrive and tasted horrible--way too sweet. My lemon drop was even missing the sugar rim! I ended up sending it back and asking for a refund (honestly, I should've done that with the food too). There were only two employees trying to serve about 10-12 tables. Plates were brought out one at a time, with no clear system, leaving guests frustrated. It's clear they were overwhelmed, but the bartender/server was especially unprofessional--no smiles, no welcome, and a generally rude demeanor that made the experience worse. What's sad is this place used to be a comfort spot for my family and friends. We've never left a review before because, at the very least, the food was hot. But this time, we left extremely disappointed. One of my friends even resorted to ordering wings through DoorDash pickup, hoping they'd be warm when she got them. That's how bad it was. Service like this makes it hard to want to come back.

Yelp
Second visit, the food is always good. The customer service is terrible, and the ambiance in the brewery side is chill. I went for specific dishes, which included the Crab Fried Rice which is one of my favorites. I also came for the Thai Iced Tea and they said they ran out. On a Saturday? You would think they would plan better for a weekend rush, but as I said, the customer service is not the best. At all. Ordered the Hanoi chicken wings, they were really good. Fried to perfection with lots of flavor. The Garlic Noodles with Fried Chicken bites was very good. The noodles were thick, Yakisoba noodles instead of the thin noodles, but still very delicious. Also ordered the Gumbo, which is NOT the traditional Gumbo you would get at a Creole restaurant. This was tomato based, with a sweet flavor and a kick to it. On a scale of 1-10, I would give it a 4.5-5. Definitely do not have to try it again. Food is good, service is bad, what can you do? Get the food to go and call it a day.

Yelp
Love this place!! We use to go to the other location all the time but it's always so busy! Lemon pepper wings were so good! Crispy and tasty. Dry fried ribs and fries were 8/10 I wish the ribs had more meat. It was fatty and lots of big bone pieces. It's no my usual dry fried rib pieces that I'm use too. I wish the fries had more flavor or salt. We also got jambalaya fried rice, all for less than $40! I'll be back for the wings! They have so many flavor options. Staff is really nice. They also sell gelato! Service is really quick. We went for lunch on a weekend. We will be back soon!

Yelp
This place is so good and affordable! The portions are reasonable too. Definitely get the garlic noodle - they used udon noodles and the flavor was awesome. I got the salt and pepper chicken wings and it came with free fries. The wings were nicely fried, savory, and delicious. I got the tater tots too and everything I bought cost like $22 only. Highly recommend you come here and try the food out!
google avatar

bonnie l.

Yelp
Ordered catering and the garlic noodles were a hit. Very reasonable but a big tray that satisfies a lot for a party. The wings are great too!
google avatar

Trina B.

Yelp
First time and I loved my wings real bad! I got the lemon pepper and they were everything I was hoping for! Price and the service was good. The place was big and cold as hell! But I forgot how cold it was once my wings arrived! This place would definitely take lots of my money if I lived closer because these wings were the truth! I'd want to try all flavors! That's a fact!! The beef fried rice and green onion rice was delicious too!
google avatar

Roger D.

Yelp
Love the original Monkey King & sure do appreciate the remix! Garlic noodles & salt n pepper wings always hit the spot. Even tried their Hot Cheetos elote & was well worth it!

Yelp
7 out of 5 stars. When I say this is my favorite, it's my favorite. This place is soooo good, my friends and I went here a lot in college. I love this place because it's quick and the workers are so nice. You order then sit. I always get the garlic noodles and side of salt and pepper wings. I think next time, I will get the full order of noodles because dang it was so good I wanted more the next day. Tbh, I don't think I have tried other things but I know people said it's really good. Try this combo next time you stop by this place. I miss it and want more, NOW!

Yelp
Ok, I wasn't going to yelp about my recent meal...but I must. For the record I am not a hater but my food was the worst. I had not been there in years and it maybe years before I go again if ever. Where do I begin...ok let me start with the dish that was the most awful. I was lazy and wanted someone else to cook for me. So I had a brilliant idea...MONKEY KING BREWERY! Why not???? I suggest it and everyone but one person said no! After eating some of the food I clearly understood why I should have left it alone. Have you had a meal that was awful but you endured it because you paid for it!!! Well that was this meal. I looked at the menu and became immediately confused. The variety was off centered for me from lumpia to gumbo to mus shu wraps‍. I was vacillating on if this is Asian fusion or what! So though I consider my gumbo pretty good, I have recipes from, what i think are some of the best true traditional taste... old school. 1) gumbo as spicy hot and sweet. If you know anything about gumbo spicing hot and sweet is a no! It was a red soup made with tomato or marinara sauce...it was spicy hot with sugar????? Sad and a miss. There was no crab nor essence of crab in it. I found three shrimp and 4 - 1/4 pieces of unidentifiable links. The gumbo was so spicy hot I needed tums and pepto to calm the flames in my guts. 2) dry fried ribs with fried - I could not find any meat on the sad looking carcass they passed off as a rib more grizzle with a bone. 3) I ordered green onion and egg fried rice- I get a notification they were out of rice and they provided no substitution. 4) garlic noodles were dry, flat and lacked flavor. The noodles just laid on the plate, bland and flat. 5) salt and pepper chicken wings, meatless and again flavorless with no dipping sauce. Next time we are hungry, I would rather eat a bag of Cheetos and drink water. Overall the meal was expensive and disappointing.

Yelp
So I waiting in line for FKS rescue ribs next door and of course they sell out, so I stepped in here with the family and found several options of several delicacies to choose from. On the menu they had Filipino options, Chinese, Vietamese, dirty south options and several others. Here are the options I sampled and how it all faired plate of the edamame - large portion of edamame, flavorful, again large portion The Jambalaya fried rice - large plate of cajun spices, shell less shrimp, hot links sliced, bell peppers and onions, definitely punch you in your mouth flavor, plate of this by itself can feed two people, I would order this again salt and pepper chicken wings - seasoned and flavored well, piping hot tasty and juicy in the middle lemon pepper chicken wings - seasoned and flavored well also, piping hot, and juicy, seems the kids like both flavors offered kids also paired their meal with fries, one order is enough to fill up 3 people, served piping hot I will have to come back, for more of their offerings, they also have boba drinks as well as alcohol food **** several options to choose from, supposedly the wings are their best seller but other items that I sampled were just as good price $$ service **** helpful, friendly ambiance *** large, high ceilings, password required to get into bathrooms

Yelp
Very nice let us try ANY beers and the garlic shrimp and rice sooo good. Bomb. I'm allergic to garlic but id eat that everyday I don't care I'll stay on the toilet. Plus the beer perfect touch. Great ambiance Fr

Yelp
I've been to both Monkey King restaurants on Park Street in Alameda. Both very good, tasty. A bit high in salt but not overwhelming. Staff here, like the other location is very young. Seems to be no older adults working at either. The staff is very nice tho. Ordered: vegetarian fried rice, lemon pepper wings, strawberry freeze, Thai tea. The Thai tea was ok, nothing authentic Strawberry freeze was basically artificial strawberry, flavored sugar, syrup, mixed with water and ice. It was extremely sweet, too sweet to even finish a couple of sips and into the trash it went. The vegetarian fried rice was delicious. Some of the best fried rice I've had from the Chinese restaurant. Lemon pepper wings are always very good. They are my daughters favorite.

Yelp
THE PLACE TO GET YOUR WINGS. Didn't even get to take a picture of the wings... they're that good! 9 wings for $10.63, server even threw in a free side of ranch I asked for. Let me tell you, the wings did not really need it. PACKED FULL of flavor melts in your mouth. I mean, what more can you say. Customer service, on point. Food quality and quantity, on point. Definitely a must have.
google avatar

Yelp
It's oknormaly the food is amazing but I recently tried the gumbo . My nigga this shit is not it bro like it taste like syrup and random food . I thought it would taste better adding the rice . Man I was totally wrong like past wrong , matter of fact I was not even going to make a post about it but hey it is what it is
google avatar

Chunichi C.

Yelp
Food is pretty good. Service is fast. You have to order at the counter and they'll bring the food to your table. You can sit inside the restaurant, on the patio or at the brewery next door. The ambiance is basic, nothing extravagant.
google avatar

Jaane F.

Yelp
We came here multiple times. We like their food portion and taste. They prepared and served the food fast. We tried their pad Thai and noodles boat. Both taste good. The staff here also friendly. The plaza here is quite big, and easy to find parking. After the meal, you can walk around the plaza and even shop.

Yelp
SOLID! I work in alameda so I've been coming to this location for YEARS! Go-to: SALT AND PEPPER WINGS (good size wings:meaty) I get it without the Jalepenos - they dust them with what seems like sugar or something to give it a some sweetness which I like The fries that come with it are the skinny type which compliment the wings. CRAB FRIED RICE- my friend told me about this item and been in love with it ever since! When I first got them there was SO much crab per rice ratio! Over the years though sometimes the crab ratio would be a little less but then I would come back and it would be better. I guess it depends on the season too if crabs are in season or not? Vibe inside has always been cool good music and Good size tvs for sports. What not. Don't forget to save room for dessert and grab you some ice cream too!!!!
google avatar

Lee D.

Yelp
Quality/Quantity - Got my usual: Salt & pepper wings (my daughter forgot to add more fries for only $2... This just means I have to come back tomorrow, LOL). Garlic noodles. My daughter ordered her usual - Crab fried rice. My wife ordered her usual - Korean wings + tater tots. We are regulars, starting from when they first opened on 1315 Park Street. Their unhealthy greasy food is so so GOOD! I used to only allow myself the privilege of coming once a month. But back then, before Alameda Island Brewery, I got my usual "Arrogant Bastard" to go with my dinner. So so happy! With the exception of the few fries that came with the salt & pepper wings, all portions are decent. Atmosphere - I usually take my food over to the brewery. But they have plenty of seating. A small ice cream selection. Clean bathrooms. Same shared parking lot in the back with the other businesses/brewery. Open 7 days a week from noon to 9pm, 10pm on Friday & Sat. I am not even confident that the 1315 Park Street location still stays open till 2am. Service - Okay, again I have always taken my food to-go and eaten it at the brewery. Price - $45, very reasonable for what we got. Of course we almost spend the same on beer at the brewery... Owner Comment - Congrats on your success and 3 locations. One of these days I plan to go back to 1315 Park Street and relive my past, LOL.

Yelp
I've came here a couple times now and I can say that it's a pretty consistent restaurant with a nice sized variety of dishes. Located on the busy park street towards the bridge you'll find yourself having a tiny struggle but not so bad of a time finding parking. Once inside you'll find to see that it's pretty clean and simple. My first go around I got crab fried rice and it didn't really move me especially for the price but ever since I've stuck with the wings (highly regarded by many) and white rice and/or garlic noodles. They hold their own against any competition, especially the Cajun wings in my opinion. The pricing is pretty good too in comparison to the many work lunch adventures I've been on lol. The staff is friendly and patient. I feel the need to add that because customer service isn't the same everywhere you go. No complaints here and to my understanding the other location is a big happy hour destination so check them out if it's drinks o'clock when you get hungry nearby lol
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and a few things have not been resolved. They don't seem to have enough staff. I ordered the salt n pepper wings and the garlic noodles. Everything was just ordinary and took a long time to be prepared. I think this was my last time.
google avatar

Tammi B.

Yelp
Went here during my first visit to the Oakland area a few years back. It was as good this time as I remember it being then. The spam fried rice is by far my favorite. We got some Korean bbq wings that were crisp with just the right amount of heat. Add to that, the green beans, very tasty. Since I sat in the car while my friend went in to pick up our to go order, I cannot comment of the service or the ambiance. Just the tasty entrees.
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
This place is good for quick service and tasty food. I usually pair my wings and fries with an island haze IPA which is from a brewery next door. You can take a # and they will bring your food to your table next door at the brewery. But they do have better tvs here than the brewery and they show the warriors games. Free parking in the back also.
google avatar

Tracy H.

Yelp
Quick service, the food is a bit oily but honestly good for bar food. There is indoor and an outdoor seating. Pets are allowed which is nice! If you want good food to sober up, I'd order here!
google avatar

Remi K.

Yelp
Food and Service has completely went downhill Not flavorful Crab fries overly spicy like the spice level could hurt someone

Joe K.

Yelp
I'm really sick and tired of ordering takeout and getting home to find the restaurant screwed up the order. This happens all the time and restaurant's never offer to do anything to solve the problem when I call to follow up. So I'm posting a review about it. Food was fine but I ordered kimchee fried rice "spam on the side" and was given friend rice without any spam at all. I paid for protein, and was given none. Restaurant food is too pricey for these kinds of screwups.

Stanley F.

Yelp
I'm not sure what their ribs really are. To me, they don't appear to be ribs. At least what I'm accustomed to. They are seasoned well, but I can't pinpoint what I ate. Has anyone experienced the same?
google avatar

Skalinn R.

Yelp
Food was good. I probably wouldn't order their garlic fries again. It was garlic powder and no actual garlic. I did give their wings and rice a try and it made up for the garlic fries. Service was great as well. Restaurant is popular, employees do a good job about taking orders quick.
google avatar

Ilse H.

Yelp
Maybe I came at a bad time/day. I found the food to be okay. I order the This & That wings with white rice. The sauce was good on the wings but idk, I found the wings to be average. The outside wasn't super crispy and I found it a little soggy, and greasy. My boyfriend got the garlic noodles, and I thought they were okay. The Thai tea, I had better but again nothing special about it. Overall, it was ight. Service was ight too. My table was sticky, but hey the bathrooms were clean .
google avatar

theobald z.

Yelp
don't go for the service; it was 'lackluster' at best. but we all loved the garlic noodles! ordered with Tofu (that was perfectly fried for my taste). serving was generous, which was fortunate because i almost had to fight to keep the forks of my fellow diners out of my plate.
google avatar

Mindy L.

Yelp
Wasn't thrilled with the experience here. Food was ok. Salt and peeper tofu was tasty, hot Cheetos elote comes off the cob, and I would pass one the s'mores fries (they sound awesome but the fried tasted frozen and were covered with marshmallow fluff and chocolate sauce that was too heavy and sweet for my liking) Service was slow, but granted it was the evening rush. The brewery is separate, so it's a good idea to order food, then get your beer while you wait. Cool atmosphere and lots of tables. It's nice that you can go between here and Alameda brewery and enjoy the outdoor patio too
google avatar

Nessa H.

Yelp
5 stars for the garlic noodles. Thats it. I have a garlic noodle problem and MK is my fix. I cant say anything for the other dishes as ive only ever had the garlic noodles. I normally order to go or pick it up so ive never really ate inside. Only compliant is that i wish it was a little less oily, but its goooood!
google avatar

Gabriel M.

Yelp
Just a bit greasy, but portions were great and all my food was jam packed with flavor. Great for friend and family gatherings.
google avatar

R P.

Yelp
Service was good (after you stand there for a minute, wondering "do we wait or are we supposed to seat ourselves???")- the gentleman was great explaining no one will come and take your order, etc... I really don't get it!!!!! Always seeing lines of people waiting at the door. The ambiance was lacking. The table was uneven- needed to ask for it to be cleaned. The food was so mediocre. The fried rice was tasty but it was so full of msg....small doses of poison for those patrons returning weekly.....garlic noodles were trash, sorry. Gummy & greasy. Blecht! You can surely find something better on Park- or just go to Safeway and purchase frozen fried rice....
google avatar

Jody F.

Yelp
Super surprised at the huge selection of different foods, ice cream bar and delivering to brewery next door... perfection!!! My mother throughly enjoyed the Mongolian Beef with the huge noodles and I have never had a better Gumbo and rice!!! New Orleans had nothing on this version that I enjoyed!!! Please keep on keeping on!!! This was the most surprising menu we have been to since our trip to Mississippi!!!
google avatar

Patty B.

Yelp
Garlic noodles are probably my favorite in the Bay Area. Salt & pepper pork chops or chicken wings always hit the spot. Service is always excellent and the staff is very friendly and polite.

Ryan B.

Yelp
LIL MAN SHRIMP is my rec 9/10 - kept it simple: just rice shrimp and their sauce ! Mia's rec: Homemade gumbo over rice 9.7/10 -perfect balance of heat with just a touch of a sweet after taste with yummy yummy shrimp Affordable prices on the wings too which were soild 7/10 It was a slower day but we Got the food so fast it was impressive Service was 10/10 , good people Ambiance: laid back, good music , plenty of TVs, good space Will be coming back and showing people this spot that come from out of town

Ken H.

Yelp
While eating I found this hair in my crab fried rice. I called there to let it be known that hair was in my food. The man who answered got silent and never responded when I was speaking. I tried to call back multiple times just to be blocked from calling. This is disgusting.

Goofy G.

Yelp
The best. I used to eat here every payday. Food is so good. My favorite is the jambalaya rice
google avatar

Manuela G.

Yelp
Came on a Friday night for some Chow Mein & Wings and was not disappointed! Mongolian Beef Chow Mein: 5/5 - I ordered this with no vegetables and spicy. They definitely got it spot on which I really appreciated. Lemon Pepper Wings: 5/5 Perfect amount of seasoning and crispy. Korean Wings: 5/5 spot on flavor and also crispy even though they were sauce based wings. We ordered online for pick up and it was ready within 15 minutes. I walked in, said my name, and was out within 2 minutes. Love how quick it was for a Friday night. Will be returning and I highly recommend! Way better experience than my previous one. It's been quite some time since but they definitely upped the food quality.

Bendi T.

Yelp
Delicious, fresh, quick. Food was is worth every penny, total was about $60 with an order of salt and pepper wings. 10/10 on each item.
google avatar

Gwyne P.

Yelp
Such a fun place for a GNO thirsty Thursday! S'mores fries: The biggest surprise of the menu! Fries as a dessert with chocolate, melted marshmallows and powdered sugar! I was expecting a sweet potato taste when I dug in, but regular potatoes became an instant favorite. Warning: BETTER FRESH. Flash fried spicy string bean & tofu: -I only wished it wasn't drenched in sauce! There's a lot of string beans (more than tofu, but I love string beans so I didn't mind.) lightly coated in the sauce would've been better. Half of the container was filled with just the sauce Flash fried chicken wings: SO CRISPY! I enjoyed every crunch, yum! We got the salt & pepper and general Tso. Both I highly recommend! I would come back for this! COVID UPDATES: -lots of space -everyone's in masks! -outdoor seating to the side

Carlos M.

Yelp
Great kimchi fried rice and wings ... plus right next to Alameda isle Brewery. Always great service
google avatar

Diana S.

Yelp
Monkey King is a good place to get a quick bite especially if you're craving wings! This location is right next to the Alameda Island Brewery so it's convenient if you're grabbing a beer too. They've got a little bit of everything but mostly Asian fusion--from salt & pepper tofu to garlic noodles to lumpia! I am a garlic fiend so the garlic noodles weren't garlicky enough for me but the noodles were a good texture. The fryer is dishing out all the hits: chicken wings, tots, fries (various flavors: spicy crab, garlic, Cajun, etc). I love their wings and they've got a ton of flavors to toss em in! I'll definitely be back to try more stuff!
