Monogram's a cool downtown coffee place with clean modern lines, an inviting space for enjoying some coffee, catching up on e-mail, or just hanging out with friends. The background music (some good alt-rock), at just the right volume, helps create the cool vibe, as does the friendliness of the staff.
Let's get to the coffee. I was in the mood for a dark roast and, while there wasn't any available, the young man behind the counter suggested a nice rich Guatemalan roast - and his suggestion was spot-on, a full-bodied, satisfying cup of coffee.
I also ordered the avocado toast, and here's where I can't really continue with the superlatives. The avocado spread was a bit too acidic - a heavy hand with the lemon, perhaps - and, while the avocado was spread onto a nice hearty bread, the bread wasn't toasted. Isn't that the whole point of calling it avocado TOAST? My order took soooo long to come out that I didn't really want to send it back, thinking it'd take soooo long to come out again. Also, there was some avocado peel in the spread, making for a bad last bite. Without the satisfying crunch of the bread to complement the avocado, this selection is a miss.
So, my suggestion is to just go for the coffee. I'd still recommend it as a cool place to hang out, read the morning paper, or just ease into your day.
